Great video as always, Wim Hof breathing, meditation and pranayama yoga(breathing) has helped me a lot in my battle with rumination, stress and anxiety. And definitely not addressing those things can fully derail your health. I think journaling and stoicism is important too. Knowing how to tackle what makes you stressed/anxious, angry and sad, whether through a perspective change or through accepting that it’s out of your control. The most important thing is not ignoring it and letting it build up.

I cannot believe the timing of this video. Very recently I have developed strange symptoms like a bounding pulse and feelings of anxiety and random stress. I think I train too much and I work a lot of hours and pretty much never take a day off. I take too much pride on "pushing my limits" to the point where I feel like I may have caused myself some damage based on how I'm feeling lately. If anyone has experienced something similar I would love to hear from you as this is really throwing me off. I had dedicated my day today to spend some time learning more about breathing, meditation, balance, etc... and then this video pops up. Thanks as always for the fantastic content... truly valuable and helpful in so many practical ways.

Breathe in through the nose, hold, breathe out through pursed lips, hold. Make the out breath longer than the in breath to prolong the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. As you get better at this and sit long enough and get relaxed enough, you can get your breathing down to a rate of one breath per minute. It's fun to play around with this stuff. The Wim Hof method is interesting too.

I'm glad I found this channel. Since talking with a gymnast who oddly trained clients with weights (more money in it for him), I've replaced weight training with calisthenics 5 years ago and I've never looked back. The most important distinction I've made between the two philosophy's is my motivation for calisthenics is enduring whilst for weight lifting it's limited, simply because it's enjoyable to move my own body rather than have it static and move a metal weight. Using a bicycle analogy: it's more enjoyable to ride a bicycle to a destination rather than sitting on an exercise bike. My training routine isn't that dissimilar to yours: three days at week is upper body and three days is lower. However for upper body (pull ups, rows, dips and push ups) I alternate weekly between three different grips: overhand, neutral and underhand. I've found that using these three different grips doing push-ups for instance (using mobile parallel bars that I can orient however I need them) made an incredible difference to my overall pecs and triceps as each grip type effects a different part of them. Subscribed.
@juanareiza68602 жыл бұрын
What exercises are you doing for those 3 leg days? I would love to try calistenics but I'm afraid to have small legs. Did your legs improve doing bodyweight leg training?
@firststep77502 жыл бұрын
@@juanareiza6860 I find legs difficult to grow using just my body weight noting however I don't do pistol squats (one legged squats) nor most asymmetrical exercises (save lunges) due to the very high stress that I feel around joints when doing - for instance - one armed chin-ups. So for legs I hug a plate or hold a dumbbell and squat until fatigue. You can buy a chest harness that'll hold a plate therefore freeing up your hands. I don't do barbell squats because I don't like the idea anymore of compressing the vertebrae even though I've never had back issues doing barbell squats in the past. Calves raises I'll do weighted as well. Legs are the strongest muscle groups and as such I found they require a lot of reps with added weights to grow. You can do calisthenics for you upper body and traditional weight training for your lower body. Which ever routine retains your motivation to workout....that the routine that's for you.
@Kboges2 жыл бұрын
I agree! Any sort of training will improve bone density over a sedentary lifestyle. Impacts and higher intensity movements will likely increase it to a greater degree, but I train with pretty high reps, and every Dexa scan shows my BMD to be quite high.
@juanareiza68602 жыл бұрын

Thank you K boges for your videos. I have been following your advice throughout the past year to great effect in my fitness journey. But this video in particular, really unlocked a whole new level for me. I viewed it around the time you released it and have been doing a 20-minute breathing routine most days since. It has been transformative physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Within a couple days of starting this exercise, I noticed that my resting state throughout the day was much more calm and centered. My breathing while exercising has also been more deliberate and powerful than before. FYI, in case it helps others, after some initial experimentation, here's the routine I'm doing now: - Downloaded a metronome app for my phone. - Set it to 5/4 time, at a speed of 1 beat per second. - Breathing through my nose, inhale for a 5 count, hold for 5, exhale for 5, and hold the exhaled state for 5. - This results in a pace of 20-seconds per round-trip, and 3 breaths per minute. - Doing 60 breaths this way takes 20 minutes (but it goes by quickly because it feel so amazing). Listening to the metronome at a low volume allows me to be very deliberate about the pace of my breathing. Sometimes it can take a few minutes to get locked in, but once I do, I feel a sense of ease at completing the exercise and time seems to fly by. I really look forward to each session most days. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

This is true. I’ve been stressing to much and it’s sad to say at 19 I’m balding. My hair thinned drastically for the past 2 years, plus my sociopathic mindset is difficult to control. Now I go out, socialise etc but being in a toxic and selfish college environment, become the same too. Matter of time I burst

Nothing sadder than a bald angry man. Nothing more attractive than a bald man who is happy with himself and accepts it. If you can't feel that, fake it until it becomes real. Do it now before you waste your life. My buddy at college was bald. Confident, happy guy, women loved him

Hello K boges community. I wanted to share out two books I've read recently related to this topic. James Nestor's Breath and Patrick Mckeown's Oxygen Advantage. One thing that really stuck with me was that the advice to just take a deeper breath isn't the best. Improving your breathing is about measuring your bolt score (a fancy way to see how long you can hold your breath) and trying to improve that score with breath hold techniques. This increases co2 which trains the body to oxygenate the blood more efficiently. If you practice breathing better at rest you can learn to nose breath during exercise too which you will find leads to a better bolt score and reduced stress and increased athletic performance. It's all about nose in nose out breathing and slowing down breathing. Hope you guys check it out! I've already started to use some of these techniques with my athletes and I'm seeing results right away. It's exciting stuff.

Yeah this is really cool info. I think the best way to think of deep breathing isn't as a "big" breath, but a breath that is pulled into your lower abdomen by your diaphragm. Stress breathing is often described as a chest dominant breath, but this is likely necessary to pull in a larger volume of air. So I generally like to tell clients that "deep" is more of a physical target, not a goal for a particular volume. As you note, over breathing is a problem.

I'm a yoga instructor building an all purpose fitness and wellbeing business and I teach all my students about deep breathing and how it governs every movement within the body. For the ones who are more on the athletic side they have mentioned to me that when put into practice within their training regimens they experienced a much sharper and more controlled execution of their skills which is what makes this practice that much more effective! Good video as always man!

"diet adherence" is a hard one for me particularly which I feel is intrinsically tied to my mental health. Anxiety and depression often lead people to turn to foods which only continue the loop making them more anxious and depressed. Breaking that cycle is so hard. I manage to do it for longer periods of time but like an addict I eventually fall off the wagon and turn to sugar/bad carbs.
@Kboges2 жыл бұрын
Your experience is totally normal. Stress management is critical for long term diet adherence. Keep in mind that a complete dietary overhaul is a significant stressor itself, so start with simple things, one at a time, and maybe focus on things in the form of an "additions". Like maybe just work on increasing protein intake to a target level, work on that for a few weeks until it's habit, then work on adding a salad or fruit, and work on that until it's habit. Little additions that move your eating pattern a bit at a time are very effective and less stressful.

Hi @kboges, thanks for the friendly reminder of such an overlooked pro-tip. 🙌🏼 I do attempt to do deep breathing myself (4-7-8) with the aim of lowering my heart BPM, but for some reason it tends to rise during the exercise. Avg. resting rate = 60 BPM Goal resting rate = 51-55 BPM
@Kboges2 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! Inhales can cause and increase in heart rate and exhales cause a decrease. You can extend your experiment with extending exhales a bit more to slow hr and increase parasympathetic tone.

I train full body everyday either throughout the day or whenever I can fit in. All bodyweight calisthenics. I've actually stopped counting reps, just focus on slow controlled form and stop at the last perfect rep, before I feel myself start to twist or bend to get a rep. 4 sets per bigger core groups, 3 sets per isolation groups that I want to build. I've also started Alternate Day Fasting, and it feels great, more energy and focus (just gotta watch out for not over-eating on my eating days). Now you've given me one more super simple breathing routine to incorporate! Unlike every other breathing exercise which says to breath out the mouth and unreasonable inhale and exhale counts etc. Hopefully this too will help my quality of sleep. Thanks Again!

Stress is everything. Stress makes workouts and nutritional choices shittier. Recently i was out on a vacation where I was driving for 6 hours a day for 3 days. Yes its not great excercise and still at the end of the day I was tired. I was eating on the road every few hours without caring about calories and i had calorie dense well cooked meals. But honestly, it was the best 3 days in the past 6 months. I felt more relaxed driving than I have done in the past 6 months sitting on my desk. At the end of the trip, my stomach problems were better and i did not feel the need to stress eat or crave sugar and i did not gain weight.
