This is why I love calisthenics because it just puts you in a more holistic… “human animal” mindset which I think is the best for longevity and long term fitness success. I’m 6 ft 11. And when I started doing calisthenics 5 years ago, I was about 357 lbs. 5 years and I’m now 240 lbs but because all my goals have only ever been performance based (so based on weight, sets, reps, and range of motion {flexibility/mobility}), I feel like I’ll never really hit a ceiling and can continue to make progress all my life. Thing is, I’ve had a lean and muscular physique since about 2 1/2 years ago. If that were my goal, that would have been the end of my journey but my ultimate life long goal is to master the basics of calisthenics - so being able to do all basic compound movements on gymnastics rings without any assistance and/or fully horizontal and I got a 6 pack LONG before I was able to do most of that. .

Simple and very true, also something that generally people need to hear more often in my opinion. I've met people, and I'm sure others did too, who want to get fit or start reading books but never achieved that because they put the bar so high for themselves and also because most of them never had a good relationship with books or exercise before then suddenly they feel this urge to conquer such domains not knowing/understanding there are things like fitness that are not an endgoal and then finished, it's adding a consistant process to one's life.

We underestimate how small wins, how improving slowly but surely is far beyond trying to do the the "best" thing and not being consistant. The hardest part is showing up, having to discipline to be consistent wheter you feel like it or not. Doing boring things in a extraordinary amount of time bring extraordinary results. Some quotes that relates to this topics : "If successful and unsuccessful people share the same goals, then the goal cannot be what differentiates the winners from the losers." - James Clear "Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible." - Francis of Assisi "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast " - Navy Seals

Don't be afraid of failing, trial and error is what makes the path unique to the individual with knowledge and actual teachings the person needs to learn in order to grow. Failing is your best friend, guys be happy and embrace to possibility to fail, that's when you are strong, not when trying to evade any possibilities to fail. Braveness isn't evading, braveness is facing it and still going, embrace all options and go for your better selves. Failure is your best master!!!
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
This is spot on! When I explain this to clients, I don't refer to setbacks, falling short, slow progress, not reaching the goal etc. as "failure". I think of failing as quitting, and never trying again; thinking about what you would like to achieve but never having the courage to pursue it. All of the obstacles we face along the way are teaching tools and THE WHOLE POINT! These are the things that make us stronger and build our resilience. If we see them in this way, then we never "fail" again.

You have an awesome way of spreading this knowledge. I just found out about this too, simply by tracking my habits and setting goals! It came to my attention that for months on end I created the same goals, that I couldn't achieve, or where I had to sacrifice long term benefit in order for the goal to be achieved. Now that my focus has been shifted on the input part solely, I managed to stick to the habits from which I know will bring me to the desired outcomes.
@primalperry5667 Жыл бұрын
I've never seen someone address this topic this way but I love it. When I started my health and fitness journey a couple years ago, I did so by focusing on additions of good habits and choices instead of "I can't eat that anymore" types of thinking. It has been slow going but consistent progress, even when I feel like I'm slacking on things I should be doing. Seems like this approach is more forgiving maybe. I'm super ignorant still of a lot of things I should be doing but enjoy the slow but solid changes.

I recently learned about a training cycle that was used by ancient Greek olympians and it really works. Every session you do a full body workout but you go day 1 - 50%, day 2 - 100%, day 3 - rest and day 4 - 25% then repeat. It takes some time to figure out training regiments that fit into that format but once you do its great because it provides balance to your routine.

Just recently found your channel. Wow, such fantastic content and not drawn out like most. Love your format. And I had to comment on this particular video as I think the point you are making here is the most important of all. Just consistently working on your health day by day and not focusing on the results. You have a new subscriber. I had a heart attack in July of 2021. This was after a lifetime of letting myself go and eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and not exercising regularly. Unfortunately, that was the wake up call that I needed. I hope others can learn from my mistake. I am 5'9" tall and I let myself balloon up to as much as 218 pounds! I had started losing weight and was about 209 pounds when the heart attack hit me. I started eating better at that point and got off the cheeseburger diet and replaced that with fish and chicken as instructed by my cardiologist and cardiac rehab. I started working out consistently in April of 2022, going on 22 months now and got obsessed with getting into shape. My weight loss stalled at about 165 pounds for about 5 months. And I know I have more to lose as my remaining fat is around my waist. I no longer have a weight goal but just a body fat goal. And even that is not easily measured so it's just a matter of how I want to look. So, now in the last couple of months, I learned about true intermittent fasting (as well as the benefits of prolonged fasting) and have stopped counting calories. No more cream and sugar in my coffee and no more snacking at night after dinner. So, back to the topic, I'm no longer obsessed with losing weight but just continuing the process. I've done strength training continuously since April of 2022 like I said above. Now the weight (fat) is seeming to move again. I'm down to 160 pounds as of today and my waist size is down another half inch. It is just a matter of the daily consistency of putting in the work. This is the path forward. I was starting to give up on losing the remaining fat but now I am no longer worried about it and I know that it will eventually happen. Besides, why should I expect a lifetime of neglect to be reversed in less than 2 years? It is amazing that I have come as far as I have in that time. NEVER fail again! You can't fail if you're consistently putting in the work every day. You are a winner! You only fail if you quit trying.

Recently fractured my tibia which has really stunted my fitness goals/progress. I've put on some fat-mass, probably lost a lot of strength, but this video reminded me that it is just a small blip in my lifetime. Plenty of time to get back to it after I've recovered...shit happens! It's a marathon, not a sprint. Thanks for the endless supply of motivation/great advice! :)

Hey bro, I really want to thank you for your past video where you stated a simpler way of training. I thought i just need to build muscle and exploited myself in my workouts, completely drained off, not able to keep up with my school works and all time looking tired. I forgot that fitness is also for mental discipline, confidence and for health. From now on i will do a simpler way of training to Improve myself and set realistic goals. Your videos are of great quality and are educational. Thank you👍

I've just been hurting myself with squats, crawls and push ups out in the freezing rain - pretty pleased with myself now! The old me would've probably seen the rain and not fetched the gloves. I've been fitting movements into everyday routines, like 50 good squats during brushing my teeth, and push ups to failure while the kettle boils. Where I can I jog a little, just have to watch my knees. Great advice again, and happy new year mate.

I've come to the same conclusion. Yes - do have a goal but what truly matters is the process. If you can stick to it. That is the true key to success.

I believe there is a dialectic between the process and the goal. You define the goal and then focus on the process. It's easier for me to aim for, say, five pull-ups, break that down into smaller goals and then focus on consistency -goal drives motivation to be consistent. But you're absolutely right - focus on what you have control over.
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Yeah you are totally right. Objective goals can certainly work well for some folks, especially people with a lot of experience putting "processes" in place to achieve them. It's a matter of practice. For many people though, they just focus way too hard on an overly ambitious outcome, but make no goals on the things to get them there.

A thought that I've had regarding this is to start with the bare minimum and work up from there. It's much easier to sustain the absolute bare minimum and thus build a habit and some momentum. If you start with the most you can do you may well burn out before you figure out what's sustainable for you over the very long term. This principle could be applied to anything fitness, language learning, whatever; do the bare minimum to make some form of progress and then, if you want, do extra on the days you feel you have the energy. I think this also forces you to get clear about your goal prioritise what is going to be the most impactful. In my own training, I'm always wary of overdoing as opposed to underdoing it. If I underdo it I can always do more tomorrow. For me personally, this is mostly a question of volume. Great video as always. Thanks for all the great content you put out.

Lose the same 20 lbs. every year. That was me, only it was lose 20, gain 30, lose 30, gain 40, lose 40, gain 50. Then it was back to lose 20, but gain 30, lose 30, gain 40. Did this for over a decade until I was a good 100 lbs. overweight. Make that mistake then you got yourself a project. Add in I was 62 when the project began. Sustainability and commitment to consistency got me to where I'm at today. Down from 320lbs. to 210lbs. I'm now 70. Age is no barrier, but it does present challenges. My advice, don't get fat to begin with.
@ares8553 Жыл бұрын
MAJOR respect, George. You're one of the many examples of how a growth mentality and positive thinking can pretty much negate the effects of age. I hope I'm as mentally strong as you at 70. The older I get the more I perceive that senility is a choice.

One of the biggest reasons why people fail at new years resolutions is that they just don't enjoy working out. If I had to get a membership at planet fitness and be stuck on a treadmill watching TV I would hate working out too. If you really dread going to the gym, or your not looking forward to your workouts, it's already over. When I watch this video, I see more than just lunges. I see a warm rain, and a nice breeze. If you have never experienced the high of a good workout, then you won't get it. But trust me, I get it. I've went for runs at sun down watching the sun set, I've done pull ups in the rain, I've sprinted through a foot of fresh snow, and many other things of that nature. Fitness should not just be physical, it should be also non physical. There are only a few other activities I enjoy as much as a good workout that can hit me soul deep. I know all this sounds kind of woo woo but it's what I think, and it's hard to put into words. You just have to live it and experience it for yourself.
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
100% agree. You are spot on.
@nealsterling8151 Жыл бұрын
Good Video! One should embrace the idea that chasing/reproducing the "most optimal" or "most effective" workout plan (as so many YT Video claim to present) gives you the best restult, but ony those programs that you can keep on doing in a consistant manner, even if that program is not the "most effective" one. Do what you can do in your current life situation (job, health and so on) without overstrain yourself in a long term. This only results in a physical or mental burn out. Remember, you want to build your body, not destroy it to the ground.
