The train ran for 99 years until Amtrak killed it in a cost cutting measure. It was may favorite train to Chicago.

Quite unfortunate to see a piece of history be killed. Amtrak killed a lot of iconic passenger trains like the Super Chief and the Pohatan Arrow. And the saddest thing is, they still haven't turned a profit despite such measures.

Definitely fantastic! It's a shame that the Broadway Limited is also just a memory. Too bad we couldn't see the Pennsylvania Limited scorch the PRR Main Line ballast at 100 mph or more, like she was meant to do...
@OldsVistaCruiser3 жыл бұрын
To my former alter ego, Ashburn Stadium, since I wrote that 12 years ago, the Keystone Limited now has a track speed of 110 mph in 2021 through Lehman Place, powered by Siemens Sprinter ACS-64 locomotives that may actually rival or exceed the feats accomplished by the vaunted GG1.

7002 last ran in 1989. I was in high school, old George Bush was president, the Berlin Wall fell, etc. that's why they got 475 and returned 89 to service (it didn't run during the 1980's) due to the permanent retirement of 1223 and 7002.

Some of the more historical footage of the steam engines looks older than 1987 though. Still - love this retrospective. Glad I was able to visit the Strasburg Railroad a few years back too.

I'd forgotten the high constant speed those P40's ran at even pulling into the station or sitting at full stop. Maybe it's to keep head end power constant. Very nice video!

Funny that at the least that little 4-4-2 could possibly be faster than that F40ph. Of course the F40 could sustain higher speed pulling greater weight for longer distance but still.
@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren4 жыл бұрын
The PRR E class Atlantics could indeed out perform the F40PH. The F40 may have slightly higher acceleration but 7002 could quickly overtake it. The real 7002 (The one in the video is actually 8063) went 127.4mph while pulling the Pennsylvania special on June 15, 1902 making her the fastest steam locomotive ever produced (Mallard's record is both a farce and slower) 1223 (the other steamer seen in the video) was also quite a speed demon as her 68 inch drivers could get her up to 80mph. Same engine also was featured in the 1941 movie "The Broadway Limited" where 1223 had to take the Broadway to Harrisburg when K4 3678 was needed on a coal train due to a power shortage.

The original route of the Broadway Ltd through Crestline, Lima, OH Ft Wayne ,Valpairso, Gary IN has been recently rebuilt ny NS to relieve freight traffic going West so In theory the line could be re-established. Sadly these is no money in the Amtrak budget to do this. This leaves the Lake Shore Ltd and the 28 hr round about route Cardinal train as the only NYC rail routes to Chicago.

NS only owns half of the line not all of it. also the line was severed in Indiana.

You sir are comparing the 20th century limited with a very early version of the Broadway. If you were to pick a year from 1939 until I would say about nineteen fifty-five, certainly the Pennsylvania Railroad Broadway limited would take the cake each time, every time. I love the New York Central, but as a man who was raised in Pennsylvania, I must maintain my loyalty to Tuscan red
