This song hit me real hard. My family really did "go broke in my 18th year" due to an economic crash (1980s). And my dad really did have to "take a job many miles from here" (From Northern CA, to West Texas). The difference is, I went with him to take a construction job. We worked side by side and I saw the pain in his eyes every day. He died at 51. He was a great, hard working, American family man. Excuse me, I have water in my eyes.
