My dad was growing up on the West Side, just off SW Boulevard when this flood happened. He has talked many times about the smell of the dead pigs and cattle from the nearby meat packing and processing plants. He also recalled some fuel tanks that were anchored down but floated away in the water and would come in contact with power lines and you could hear explosions from time to time when they did. Their house was on the corner of 29th and Mercier, just to the East of the boulevard which is a bit up hill a higher elevation. He said they were lucky because the high water mark stopped just on the curb at the corner of 29th and Mercier(this was before I-35 cut the neighborhood in half) and only a few feet from their house.

For what it's worth if it makes you feel any better while doing Time Travel research on July 23, 2023 (God fed me the parameters of being my 16 year old self *in reality I wasn't born till many decades later* in 1951 Kansas City, MO on July 23, 1951 -UTC) and I had never heard of the 1951 Flood until I started looking up KC, MO and 1951 to figure out what could be so interesting about that place that of all the places and times spanning two generations of my own family God would send me there... 🤔🧐
