Jim Cornette is the “F”ing GOAT of Pro Wrestling. He can tell you the COMPLETE history of the sport. His on screen personality is very entertaining. I remember when I first saw Jim Cornett and The Midnight Express on WTBS at 6:05 PM on Saturday and sometimes Sunday night at 8:05 PM. His segments were by far the best segments on the show. He could sling and talk shit all day long about the wrestlers they are feuding with. When he fell off that scaffold at Starcade, I looked at my father and said that was real. He really broke his leg. And my father‘s telling me oh it’s just a part of the show. Fast-forward 20 years after that and come to find out I was right he did get severely hurt by falling off that scaffold. But he played it off well. Out of everybody that’s involved in Pro Wrestling Jim is the only person I would love to sit down and buy dinner and talk psychology in the Pro Wrestling business. If I had enough money like Tony Kahn, I would open up a Wrestling promotion and I would give Jim Cornett any amount of money he wanted to run , right, and produce the entire show. I would give him the keys to the kingdom and say whatever you needed I’ll get for you. I would also tell him that it will be rare that I even stick my nose into their business when it comes to writing in producing the show. I would be that “ silent owner” when it came to the power of the pin in the hiring of firing of wrestlers. I would leave that in his hands. I doubt he would do it, but money does talk. He would be the only one that I would want to have the pin in the book. If you wanted to bring in people to help him fine with me whatever he would want. But he had the last word and that word would rule. I know some people are gonna read this and have some controversy on what I said and that’s fine. It’s their opinion.

Jim Cornettes career feels like a rib at this point. Midnight Express peak in WCW just as Jim Herd comes in, he goes to the WWF during the New Gen which is the second worst period in WWF history, he opens Smokey Mountain when the business as a whole is at its lowest ebb (at that point), he’s in the WWF until Russo shows up, then he joins OVW not long before Lauranitis takes over from JR, then Russo follows him to TNA then he has all this shit to deal with in ROH.

I was just listening to the Bruce Pritchard podcast and they were reading Vince Russo‘s book and I died laughing because he was talking about the time he got Howard Stern rat pack in the summer of 1998 to join the oddities now keep in mind this is like 15 years After this happens so Vince Russo knows how big or how small the rat pack with the oddities were to WWE fans. This guy still wrote in his book something like “ everyone was laughing at me and Paul Behr even said that by booking these people he had just slapped one of the boys in the mouth, but no one could see that the rat pack with the oddities was going to change WWE history forever.” How clueless can you be when your big creative idea was to take Howard Stern’s creative idea and just put it on your show and then, unless it gets brought up to a fan like I had completely forgot about them until I was listening to that podcast so it’s pretty much been completely forgotten and it was a terrible idea and this guy still wrote in his book that it was the thing that changed WWE forever for the better. Every now and then you meet someone who ate chips and you run across them on the Internet and they sit there and they try their best to make this argument that Vince Russo was brilliant and most of these people don’t know what they’re talking about. They just hate Jim Cornett because , they go to sleep at night thinking about blowing Kenny Omega’s dick. But they’ll sit there and try to make this argument that Vince Russo was a great book or creative person with the only place. He had any success with WWE and it’s not like he was booking full angles. Like he didn’t book the undertaker versus Kane . He just came up with the spot on Monday night raw where Kane choke slams him through the announcers table. So in that environment, where he was on a team of creative people where it was he, Vince McMahon, Pat Patterson, Jim Cornette in Bruce Pritchard that’s when he was successful but look at the other people that were around him. I’m not saying they’re perfect people. I’m not saying they haven’t done stupid shit, but all of those men are very good at wrestling. So without the rest of that creative team, how good did he do in the other companies like WCW and TNA? He flat on his face.

I'm at 49:10. Jim is kinda right about how breaking kayfabe hurt the business, but he is also wrong. Reason? You still see fans getting engaged in the storylines and characters, just look at the live reactions. There is a big segment of "smart" fans, which is heard especially online, just like IDK Star Wars nerds. But there is a large amount of fans who simply are just fans, you see them online too, people who just comment on WWE YT channel stuff like "I love Randy Orion". And as we are becoming more closed off from each other post COVID, who knows, many fans will maybe even kinda forget about what is kayfabe more and more. And the irony is Jim's online followers are exclusively these smart fans.

breaking kayfabe allowed wrestling to reach its greatest heights, once vince mcmahon admitted that wrestling was entertainment it allowed for even more over the top storylines which the fans loved even more, but in jims opinion it also caused the business to quickly crash and burn out soon after
@PiCheZvara
@PiCheZvara 13 күн бұрын
@@kerpal321 Yes, but you still have fans totally eating this shit up. I was at a WWE event live this year and two teenagers were next to me and the girl was SO genuinely invested in Sami, Becky, etc. and so genuinely invested in hating the bad guys. real fandom still exists. maybe these people are aware this is just "sports theater", but they simply like it and get invested in it.

@@takerdust that would be true only if you watched all the wrestling documentaries prior to start watching wrestling. interviews like the one with Cornette here are watched only by long time fans, literally no one else will watch it or even knows it exists.

Proof even if this is old that Jim was a mark for himself and thinks 1400 people in a gym in 1988 some how is relevant was stupid it’s all about TV revenue if at the time of this taping he knew better he was just taking a pay check working Mr. Oliver .

I’ve never liked listening to Cornys grip about religion because being an atheist and believing you’re just gonna become worm food when you’re dead makes no sense to me. That being said, aside from that he had a brilliant mind for wrestling. At least if you’re more of a fan of the of old days/kayfabe wrestling. The stuff they do now just doesn’t interest me. Why take the time to watch if there’s no believable storylines instead of them just going out and playing in the ring with no story behind it

Wrestling is just a male soap opera but if you cant get immersed in the show and they start doing a lot of crazy shit to kill that immersion then it makes for a shitty tv show. you wanna be a superhero go try and make it in hollywood. No one gonna believe a stick man can actually stand a chance in a fight against a muscle man that could easily snap them in half
