What makes this performance so special for her is that she is not just in front of an audience of fans. This was the Juno Awards, Canada's version of The Grammies, and the ones giving her the standing ovation are fellow artists, songwriters and performers, her peers. I have had the privilege of seeing kd lang perform live outdoors at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. No autotune ever. She had the band called the Siss Boom Bang with her, but the voice... the voice is just as powerful live as it is on a recording, maybe even moreso. There was a big, trucker type fella beside me... you know... nice guy, but not super emotional type, but all he kept doing after every song was say "Oh my god, oh my god" and I was like... "Yeah, my compliments to her maker." She is a treasure. She did a whole album of Canadian covers called "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" and it is one of my favee albums... period.

In my opinion, Cohen, Buckley and Rufus Wainwright sang this song better than KD. Simply put, she sang the refrain "hallelujah" with the wrong emphasis.
@liisasilverstone7682 жыл бұрын
@@BobSoltis1 : What do you think? Of course KD has a better voice but Cohen has the soul which delivers the heartbreak of the song. KD seems to have no idea what she is singing about, except to use her voice in the best possible way. I guess it depends on what you are looking for-- Ken Silverstone (using my wife's account and not speaking for her).
@liisasilverstone7682 жыл бұрын
@@BobSoltis1 -I'm Ken Silverstone and I appreciate your intelligent and pleasant rejoinders. Here's a question: Do you base your response to music on what someone important says or what your ears here? As I suspect you know, there was book written solely about the origins and history of "Hallelujah." The conclusion, I believe, was that Jeff Buckley sang the song best and made it famous. My personal favorite, along with LC, is Rufus Wainwright, who sang the song as part of a tribute performance of Cohen songs, entitled "I'm Your Man." I find a key determinant to how well the song is sung is the musicality and the extension of the final word "hallelujah." If I remember correctly, KD did not do a perfect rendition of this, choosing to demonstrate the versatility of her voice. But as you said, this is subjective. By the way, who do you sang Bob Dylan's song better, Dylan or Joan Baez, who had a near perfect voice?

Jeff Buckley and KD Lang sing the song just beautifully. And they’re both completely different. I get goosebumps when I hear the song and it always makes me cry. The night my dad passed away. I had my mother in the car and we were on our way to the hospital. She heard that song and she kept restarting it all the way down there. my dad’s been gone 13 years now and I still can’t listen to it falling apart I’ve seen k.d. lang live many times and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wearing shoes. The Leonard Cohen version is going to be completely different. He’s a poet first and a singer second. A lot of his songs that he performs live are more like spoken word. But again he wrote it and it’s just another wonderful version. Enjoy.

I think I can say KD Lang's version is my favourite of a song I love. She did Leonard Cohen proud. I love the tone of her voice but it is the way she conveys emotion that really gets me. I also love her singing Crying, both with Roy Orbison and also alone. Roy Orbison was a favourite of mine from childhood. The first song I can remember from childhood was Roy Orbison singing Oh Pretty Woman. It was his voice that just got to me. I guess perhaps unusual for a young child but I clearly had taste that early. I was about 7 when Oh Pretty Woman came out and as I said the first song I can remember loving. We had some amazing talent in the 60s. Another favourite was Gene Pitney. I was so happy and excited when I heard Roy and KD collaborating on Crying. Two beautiful emotional voices together.

Here's a rather long poem that I feel fits this beautiful song by the incomparable K.D. Lang: When I was a child I once sat sobbing on the floor Beside my mother’s piano As she played and sang For there was in her singing A shy yet solemn glory My smallness could not hold And when I was asked Why I was crying I had no words for it I only shook my head And went on crying Why is it that music At its most beautiful Opens a wound in us An ache a desolation Deep as a homesickness For some far-off And half-forgotten country I’ve never understood Why this is so But there’s an ancient legend From the other side of the world That gives away the secret Of this mysterious sorrow For centuries on centuries We have been wandering But we were made for Paradise As deer for the forest And when music comes to us With its heavenly beauty It brings us desolation For when we hear it We half remember That lost native country We dimly remember the fields Their fragrant windswept clover The birdsongs in the orchards The wild white violets in the moss By the transparent streams And shining at the heart of it Is the longed-for beauty Of the One who waits for us Who will always wait for us In those radiant meadows Yet also came to live with us And wanders where we wander. -- Anne Porter, "Music"
