Kdenlive quick tutorial - learn it in 10 minutes!

This is a very quick introductory course of Kdenlive. My goal with this tutorial is to teach you the essentials of Kdenlive video editing in just a few minutes so that you could start using it immediately and then learn more as you use it. I think that you can learn the essentials of Kdenlive video editing in 10 minutes as the title says. Of course it takes a much longer time to truly master many aspects of video editing. This video shows you the basics of Kdenlive (basic video editing, basic sound editing, and video rendering settings) and I will discuss more advanced Kdenlive options in my future videos. Still I think that after watching this video you can immediately do the basic photo editing. I like Kdenlive for its ease of use, great options, and because it is free software.

Excellent, I like the pace. Doesn't waste time being too hand-holdey, covers things fast. We can always rewind if it went a little fast so that's not a problem. I'm impressed by this software. I only moved too Linux for my personal desktop in the last week, after decades of using it at work as a server. I've tried desktop before several times but this is the first time I felt it was a complete replacement for Windows that doesn't make any compromises.

@@tom_photo I built a career out of Linux, running as a server. I tried moving to Linux for my personal desktop 4 times previously, but each time before it couldn't replace Windows for every thing that I did daily, and I wasn't interested in dual booting. This time it's good. I'm running Windows 10 in a VM still for a couple of old devices I have, an Epson scanner and a Brother label printer. I think both can eventually be handled by Linux when I figure out the secret handshake, but for now this is good enough.

While there have been a couple of Windows tools that I've wanted, I've been able to run them through Wine without any problems. I particularly enjoy using Linux for coding. I'm also utilizing Linux clusters for high-performance computations. Cheers!

​@tom_photo I like the pace myself. You explain and demo much better than others. I use magic lantern and dual partitioned Manjaro (main) and Windows. DVR is a pain in Linux indeed so I keep Windows for my pro audio n DVR. I have some experience w KdenLive n have it in my main Linux partition n I look forward to seeing your workspaces. The program is made for the Linux desktop environment KDE, pronounced kay dee eee. The NLIVE part comes from it being a "nonlinear video editor". So it's the KDE nonlinear video editor. I don't know how it's pronounced but I call it kay dee eee n lyve. I don't like to lose the KDE part. (I'm in love with KDE and have been since 2006)

If you have a 10 minute video and you want to break it into 3 parts and edit each part to make completely separate finished videos, how do you do that??

@@scotttate1103 Hi Scott! You have several options. The simplest way is to just open your 10 minute video in Kdenlive and drag it into the editing window. Now save it as a project three times under three separate names. Then you open the first one, cut off and discard the last 2/3 of the video and do your editing. For the second one cut off the first and last 1/3 of the video and retain only the middle 1/3 for editing. For the third one discard the first 2/3 of the video in a similar fashion. So, it's quite simple. Cheers!

For some reason when I lower the proxy settings so it works better in the preview screen, it turns the video 90 degrees and the rendered video is sideways and only the audio will play. The video lags so bad it may or may not move. I didn't set the proxy settings to where it was longer one way and shorter the other way in a manner that would have rotated the video.

Hi DunderHead 5000! Thanks for your question. This is a behavior I've never seen. Are you using Windows, Linux Mac? What is the resolution and bitrate of your original video? What is the video format? Does the video play correctly on Kdenlive without proxy? Did your camera have auto rotate enabled? @@tom_photo Thank you for getting back to me. Auto rotate is not enabled. I've decided to build a budget PC. Everything is just lacking on this laptop to be able to do anything. I run the latest Pop!_OS LTS.

P.S. It just locks up when trying to anything dealing with video and the RAM can't be upgraded. It can be seen by the CPU but it has no idea what to do with it.
