Excellent choice! I love my V and have had it since 2007. School of Rock was part of the desire for me as well, since I was at just the right age to be impressionable when it was released. For me, I was enamored with the classic white ‘67 reissue that was available at that time, but with the upcharge for that finish you got an ebony fretboard and it was totally worth it. The only mod I did to mine was installing a red Sanwa killswitch (inspired by Buckethead), but I’d love to do more in the future. Can’t wait to see what you do to yours! Congrats on the acquisition and I hope you enjoy it!

Michael Schenker is arguably THE guy to make flying Vs synonymous with Heavy Metal. He wasn't the first person to play a V, but he definitely made it popular. Anyone who doesn't know him, he's a melodic genius with godlike vibrato. He's also a bit of a lunatic, but guitar wise was sensational. He was a massive influence to Hammett, Mustaine, Hatfield, Randy Rhoads, Slash just to name a few. He's the missing link between guitar playing in the early 70s and guitar playing in the late 70s/early 80s. Really doesn't get enough credit for his influence.

17:25 The bridge is supposed to flat on the top side, it's the saddles that follows that radius. It's what happens when you have the tailpiece decked so the strings rest on the bidge itself before going to the saddles, either top wrap or raise the tailpiece.

@ERiCtheBuLL5 ай бұрын
Definitely consider putting a Gibson 500T pickup in the bridge position. I have a 2001 Gibson '67 reissue V in white and I couldn't imagine it with any other pickup. Its perfect for it. Kluson also make some locking style replacement tuners that should drop right into your existing screw holes and headstock holes. And for a bridge replacement, I think TonePros would suit it well. Regardless of all that, looking forward to seeing the mods you make on this one.
@PrettyRecordsАй бұрын
At around 17:25 you mention the "bridge is supposed to be curved" In my experience, some are and some aren't. Depends on the year and the factory making them. So I'd say that it hasn't "bent" out of shape, it was probably flat to begin with. It would probably snap before it bent! As I can't see how string pressure would flatten out a cast bridge.Perhaps some Gibson experts can chime in here 👍I agree it makes sense to have a slight curve, but a few bridges I've seen are simply flat, no curve.

I love my Flying Vs. For me it was KK Downing mostly. I got a cherry red 1958 layout, 67 body and headstock, my only Gibson and it's wonderful. Not the biggest fan of the 500T in the bridge but it definetly does it's thing. I've just moved more to blues but generally PAFs even for metal. Got an Epiphone 58 Korina and it's an old Korean made but I don't known what happened, if the guy who made it was super passionate or what but it is my most gorgeous guitar. Just perfect, fretjob perfect, fit and finish perfect, gorgeous Korina veneer on the solid Korina. I put Toneriders (AC2) and coil splits in mine and now it's the best sounding guitar, at least in my country. People constantly compliment it. Vs are just special. I don't understand the criticism for sitting down, I think every guitar except the Flying V is awkward sitting down, especially a Les Paul (which I do love) even a Strat and Tele have you holding the neck mostly horizontal which gives you that twisted wrist ergonomy. On a V you have the perfect 45°. Pickups a little further apart than the Les Paul, so a bit brighter on the bridge and a bit darker on the neck. There is no blues sound that comes close to a PAF style pup in the neck position on a V. Just ask Albert King! And with a proper set of bright alnico 2 PAFs the bridge is very awesome, not quite Telecaster bright but getting there. I wish Gibson and Epiphone had more models. So many Les Pauls by every manufacturer but classic symmetric shape Flying V not even Gibson have more than a handful for sale and they're expensive, despite a Les Paul being way harder to make it more than a Standard... I wish Epiphone would make 67s and despite having a perfect one I am lusting after the new Epiphone Korina V in coop with the custom shop and I've seen people compare them favourably. Flying Vs are the best. Followed by Telecaster, then Les Paul and SGs, then Superstrats and at the very bottom Strats. For me. If I had only two it would be a V and a Tele. Together they can rule the world. Definetly try putting some alnico 2 PAFs in the V. It just unlocks it. Burstbuckers or Toneriders! And trust me you can still make metal with those pups. Plenty of boosts, drives and screamers out there. While Ibsave for a the new Epiphone 58 I will build a 67 Vibrola V in cherry (I can't find sparkling burgundy nitro finish...). And no I'm not obsessed by guitars at all!!! I needed two Vs, two Les Pauls, a Strat a Tele an SG and an RG. How else would I decorate my walls!

Welcome to the Flying V club! If that neck pickup was sunken in, it's probably the screw and/or spring that fell through when adjusting. It should be a Gibson 496R which sounds pretty good as a lead. This guitar originally came with a Gibson 500T for the bridge, I would try to track one down if you haven't tried it - one of the most overlooked metal pickups, tons of gain saturation and tight low end. I have EMG 81 and Duncan JB loaded guitars, but I still choose my V with the Gibson 500T for rhythm tracking whenever possible.

I'd be concerned about any petrochemical solvent around a cellulose finish. A quick wipe over might not damage the finish if allowed to evaporate quickly, but cellulose isn't known for its resilience. However, an abrasive polish and some elbow grease will clean any kind of paint or lacquer. Naptha (known as white spirit in UK and Ireland) is plenty common in DIY stores, and is the go to solvent for cleaning up unfinished fretboards before oiling.

If you're going to change the pick ups, id take a look at upgrading the wiring too, depending on what you want to go for, I doubt you're thinking of putting vintage voiced PAFs on it but Gibson does a thing called 50's wiring that changes how the tone and volume controls interact and gives you a treble bleed. New wiring can make an old set of pick ups sound new, just worth a think about anyway.

Nice mods hmm I’d definitely replace the collapsed bridge with an oem part, replace the bridge pickup with an iron gear rolling mill or an appropriate Gibson pickup, the wiring I would go traditional with an Orange drop and wire the middle setting out of phase like Peter Green/ BB King add a couple of push pulls to do series/parallel and a blow switch ( bypass everything straight to amp) Tuners I would go hipshot locking tuners or any tuners the same shape as originals but in metal that have a smooth action and are locking, although for me locking is a lower priority with looks and smooth action being more important. As for knobs speed knobs over the old reflector ones. And if you really want to go to mod town fit a speedometer because you play so fast 😂

I've definitely bought guitars based on films. I'm a bit older than the pair of you but after a few beers in Jan 2019, I bought the frost Silver Sky... Because it reminded me of Wayne's World 'excalibur'. Why didn't I just buy a 62 strat? See the beer comment. I also picked up an 80s made in Japan (Fujigen) Ibanzes, not the exact same model but very similar to Marty McFly's he plays during the audtion with Huey Lewis as the teacher (you're just oo darn loud). The vintage ones add to it I think, it feels more like you're really playing from that era.
