An In-Depth look at the 2003 (1995-2006 model) KDX200 which was used in the making of Torture Test Magazine Volume One. This review goes over the handling, suspension, brakes, engine, power, reliability, and general feel of the Kawasaki KDX200.
If you enjoyed this review, you will definitely enjoy Torture Test Magazine Volume One. Check it out! torturetestmagazine.com/produ...
Torture Test Magazine is an e-magazine which documents, in fine detail, the stories of bikes subjected to a real-world reliability test known as "the torture test." In the magazine, the torture test is conducted on a bike until it mechanically fails so badly that it can no longer run. Why? Because bike reviews based on a few hours of test riding are not satisfying enough. We want to know exactly how reliable a bike is, and how it will eventually fail. Simply put, Torture Test Magazine brings you the world's most detailed reliability and cost of ownership reviews for motorcycles.

And totally inappropriate for what you’re doing. You need an engine with 2000 cylinders. Not 1 cylinder. Why do you want an air cushion ride? You need SOLID rubber tyres. Society hands you this stuff before you can comprehend it. It’s 1 cylinder built for NOspeed. Don’t you get it yet!? It goes “BANG” and then nothing happens. Then you’ve got to begin the cycle again. BANG and then nothing happens.

Wrong! He’s exceeded the engineering. The air cushion ride feature failed 10,000 times during his ‘test ride’. He failed to de-power the engine from factory. You’re not riding a rocket ship. It’s only 1 cylinder! They’re all, putt putt bikes. One explosion happens and the the cycle repeats. You need an engine with 2000 cylinders. You people are insane! I’ve owned mine since 1995. It has an insane amount of miles/hrs on it, it’s hard to say how many. If I said what I think it has on it u guys would think I was crazy but I used it for backroads transportation for the 1st 5 years along with thousands of miles of trail riding in Arkansas. I’ve driven it through water up to the seat, I waterproofed it best I could. I’ve jumped it off cliffs. I’ve wrecked it six ways from Sunday and the last time I kicked it over it started on the first kick. Just an amazingly reliable bike that carried my 200lb ass everywhere I pointed it. And I pointed it in some ridiculous directions that I shouldn’t have but it never let me down or left me stranded, EVER.

I ride a KDX 200 2003 as well, but I wouldn't recommend removing the snorkel or air box cover. Kawasaki designed the box as a pressure wave resonance chamber where as the bike runs it pushes air out the exhaust on the exhaust stroke but air still escapes through the carborator. To make the bike more efficient they designed the air box so that on the following intake stroke the box would help to rebound and push more air into the engine to help create better power low end.
@ITBubba1
@ITBubba1 4 жыл бұрын
Hate to step on toes here. but, The air box lid was simply designed to make it harder for water to get in . Seeing as how the KDX was designed to be more of a woods bike ( ya know, creek crossing and stuff) than a desert sled . Which also explains the reason for a lot of that bikes personality characteristics . What you may be thinking of is the Boost Bottle , Yamaha used for years (that most will tell you was pointless) . Kind of hard for intake charge to go backwards through the carb when the reed valves are closed ! Never owned a KDX but have and still do , own a number of Yamaha IT's . The first thing we ALL did to them was take the lid off the air box so they could breath ! Makes a difference ! But will need to rejet probably.
@Two-StrokeLife
@Two-StrokeLife 4 жыл бұрын
@@ITBubba1 Your aren't wrong but you're also not right. I have had and dyno'd many trail bikes over the years that actually suffered by removing or modifying the air box, this can be attributed to resonance tuning. As for reversion when the reeds are closed you are correct, however, there is a crossover on two strokes where the positive pressure in the crankcase does push back through the carb before the reeds are completely closed. If you want to see this for yourself pull your air cleaner, start the bike and rev it. You will see a slight mist of fuel get pushed into the air boot/box (some engines are worse than others). This is the reason why "modern" two stroke air boots/box are designed the way they are.

I dreamed of having a dirt bike as a kid and never got one. Well when I was 15 I got a job and worked all summer. I ended up getting a 1990 KDX200 and oh boy did I have fun. The previous owner got it a road legal title so I slapped some plates on her and took off. There was this massive jump right out front of my school and I would hit it 5 gear pinned in front of everybody leaving school. It was everything I ever wanted. Most reliable pos I’ve ever owned. Now I’m about 17 and everywhere I go in my town I get asked if I’m the kid with the bright green 2 stoke ripping around.

Superb review! I've had them all (KTM, HUS, Beta) and yet I still keep coming back to the KDX 200. And though, I currently own a 2017 Beta 300RR, and enjoy riding it, I honestly, smile more when I ride my fully resurrected, slightly modded, and properly suspended 96 KDX 200 (my third H model kDX 200 since 2003). Dollar for dollar and reliability-wise, it is the best bike I've ever owned. Every time I've sold one of my KDX 200's off, I instantly regretted it. When I think about all the money and time I've spent on other bikes (purchasing, setting them up, mods, etc) since getting back into riding in 2003, I shake my head in disgust and realize that I should've just stuck with my 02 KDX 200 and rode the wheels off of it. And, nah, it doesn't have the power of my Beta, but for some reason I just find it so much more fun to ride -- and it's definitely easier to maintain. The KDX has no bells, no whistles, no mapping, etc.. -- it's simply just a darn good all-around offroad/woods bike which, through a few simiple low cost mods and proper set up, can be made to do whatever you want it to do. I'll certainly be holding onto this KDX until the end. Again, great review -- Thank you!

I couldn’t be happier, with time I’ll dial in the suspension and probably upgrade it but have plans to race a full season next year in Hare Scrambles on it. Awesome in depth review! Its given me some inspiration👌 I've owned a KDX 220 since 2013, but it has been off the road for the last 3 (through no fault of its own😉). I dug it out of the shed a few months back, wanting to do some trail riding again, so changed the oil, brake pads, wheel bearings etc, and she fired up 2nd kick! This video has given me inspiration to get it back into good shape, I've stripped it down to bare bones, re-done the top which was in amazing shape anyway....other than the KIPS. It was so gunked up and was very hard to move even by hand. It's all back together and now moves freely, although the actuator pin has snapped at some point so waiting on a new part to arrive. Went to town on thoroughly cleaning everything attached to the frame, it's been neglected in that respect🙄 Looking forward to getting it back on the trails 😃

I know you hear this a lot, but, once again an absolutely outstanding review in every aspect. Informative, technical, detail oriented, entertaining, and just flat out great. We actually are very similar in our KDX ownerships in that I purchased my 2000 model in nearly perfect condition for the exact same price as you did as my first 2 stroke. It had the exact effect on me that you described in your review. I now own exclusively premix. While I had initially been scared off from them by the ultra aggressive power characteristics of 250 mx'ers, the KDX was an excellent way to familiarize myself with 2 stroke handling. I now own a 2002 CR250 as well, and although it in my opinion is superior to the KDX in every way at mid to higher speeds, the KDX's endearing simplicity, ease of maintenance, and tighter trail abilities make it hard to beat. One thing I might mention to any exclusively 4 stroke riders out there is that personally I found that learning to ride 2 strokes greatly improved my riding overall. 450 4t's used to scare me on singletrack, not anymore! Anyway super long comment concluded, keep up the kick-ass work!

You must be deaf, blind, and uneducated. The bike was destroyed during the vid. The air cushion ride feature failed 10,000 times during filming. The factory has over built the engine and he failed to turn it down to the optimal setting. Those 2 tiny explosions per cycle aren’t even exploding crisply. The idle setting is all wrong. At speed, the engine will just repeat 100 wrong explosions per minute. The bike is nothing special. Tools are nothing special.

I bought mine off Craigslist in March 2015 with unknown hours. I've since put on 1055 hours and 17,600 something miles, never once had to open up the motor for anything, and it has not left me stranded one single time.... Never even fouled a plug. I just completed the entire NCHSA race series this year on it, 14 races, plus 6 races in another series, plus 3 enduros..... 23 races total and it started first kick every time and finished every single one without even a hiccup.... Zero DNF's. I ride it as a supermoto and dual sport as well. You can't kill these things. You're right about them getting hard to find, because many others just like myself, simply will never get rid of their KDX's.....i know I won't. BTW a Lectron carb is great with these bikes too, and increases fuel mileage a lot! Thanks for the great video and review..... I'm glad to see these bikes still getting some love and attention.... They often get overlooked and under appreciated by the younger generations that only know the sea of orange

Over 1,000 hours on the original top end? I knew these bikes were bullet proof, but that is just insane!
@thirdgenlxi
@thirdgenlxi 5 жыл бұрын
@@codyjoseph44 yes sir..... well I don't know if it's factory original top end, but it hasn't been changed for as long as I've had the bike. Just went and looked and just since I've had it, I've put 1058 hours and 17,652 miles. The guy I bought it from rode it for 2 years before me and he never went into it either. It still had the original factory front tire and tube when I bought it in 2015 though so I don't think it had a whole lot of hours on it..... it probably is original. I was planning on doing a top end when it started to lose compression but it just won't lose compression..... still at 155, and piston and cylinder still look great from what I can see looking through the ports. I've had zero problems out of it other than usual wear and tear stuff (wheel bearings, linkage, etc). Definitely bulletproof bikes, I don't know any other bike, 2 or 4 stroke, that could pull off what this bike has when it comes to being reliable. It just works..... every single time. On a side note..... I also have an 04 Honda CBR 600 F4i (sportbike) that I bought new and now has 323k miles on it, one car with 215k miles and another car with 438k miles. I seem to have good luck with making stuff last, apparently, lol

That’s freakin awesome that you‘re able to get that many hours outta a top end like that! I’m used to the mx crowd where people are doing top ends at like 20 or 30 hours (bit overkill if you ask me). Do you mind if I ask what premix oil you run and at what ratio? Also how aggressive your normal riding behavior?

Can I ask you a question? I bought and restored a 1996 KDX 200. I have spent a lot of money on the bike (around 4K). I was wondering if I should sell it to buy a new 2020 KTM xc-w 250 tpi. I think I will like the suspension, ergonomics and hydraulic controls better. Surely it's much more money. I am a beginner to intermediate weekend warrior. I mainly ride single track, slow technical, hard enduro trails. Do you think I should go with the new KTM or the KDX will be enough for what I do?

I was impressed with someone having the ambition to start their own magazine, so I just bought the first issue and can say that it is very well done. The writing and pictures are equal to, or better than any of the Dirt Rider, Dirt Bike, or Motocross Action articles that I have been reading for the last 40 years. Really good review. I had a KDX220 and agree with everything you said. Cool you mention the "sweet spot" just before the power band and how you can ride that sweet spot. I drove many following 4-strokers bonkers by riding this zone. It sounds and feels so docile but pulls hard instantly when asked. One thing you kinda missed is that this bike does not wear you out! It is so easy to ride that you can out-ride everyone else because it takes less effort and you can go hours longer without arm pump. In the end I sold mine because I wanted that beefy 4-stroke power for riding high altitude. I wish I still had it and put on a KX front end. Oh, and the ski-jump seat just never did it for me. Modern flatter seats are much better.

Subscribed. Great content! And you hit the nail on the head on the KDX. Coming from a XR400 to a KLX300 to a KTM525 I can say the KDX is my new favorite bike. I let a buddy ride it last week and it was his first time ever on a motorcycle. After almost looping it out on the first clutch release he proceeded to ride it the rest of the day with no issues including going on a 20 mile trail ride following me on the 525 and another buddy on a 450R. Its amazing how a bike can teach some one to ride but can still but a smile on my face quicker than my 525. Plus I got my 1995 KDX200 a couple months ago for $700 after it had been sitting in guys garage for the last 18yrs. Seriously one of the best trail bikes ever made.

My kTm 300 MXC in 1996 was the bike I obtained the most trophies with in my years of racing. It did take much to dial it in to suit me. My dealer is pretty famous, knew me and my ability. He set it up before it even rolled our the door. The list of mods wasnt too long, but did add some to the cost. I can only dream of a bike like that now. Out of my financial realm these days.

I've been keeping my eye out for one lately as I'm getting a little nestalgic these days. I have a 300ktm (yes, I know... I have myself a 2004 KDX 220R. I started my off-road riding experience on a 2017 xt250. Man what a difference, it was even scary at first, how much more power it had. It obviously handles much better than the XT, but I still feel more comfortable on my XT. Especially on steep loose up hills. I tried going up a hill I did on my XT which tractored up it, despite being loose and rocky, and then my KDX kept wanting to loop lol, I know I need to learn to slip the clutch better, and I know a more capable rider would have zero issues climbing the hill. But for some reason with the XT I could go up it slow and pick my lines better, despite not having not a lot of speed, and not having to slip the clutch. I do have Tubliss on my XT and I usually run it around 5psi, or lower or even zero psi lol, while off-roading with a stiff sidewalled tire. Were as my KDX is still rocking a tube, so it's hard to get near 10 psi without pinch flats in rocky terrain and bigger hits.

Rock solid reliable, light as a feather, great handling and much faster than expected. Just a blast to ride. I've owned too many dirt bikes. This is the only one I won't sell. A great vid. I am 55, have very little experience in dirt riding , living in South Africa, have limited tracks that can be safely ridden alone, have a 2003 kdx that I love. Mods..full fmf, boyesan Rad block, 50 tooth back sprocket, Kuba links so I can reach the ground, Clake One light clutch. I dream to be able to ride confidently through open landscapes... or just being able to wheelie confidently. But it is an amazingly sweet ride and has facilitated my children to learn how to ride dirt. It is part of the family and I hope in the next 10 years to teach my grandkids to ride on it too. Kudos to Kawasaki and thanks to you for a great, balanced and interesting report.

Well you took the words right out of my mouth . I absolutely love my 03 KDX 200 it to me is the OG trail bike. Living on the west coast I ride super tight tech trails, lots of log hopping and we’ll when the trail has been taken out by a tree you have to bush whack your way around. I grew up riding mx bikes because that’s what everyone bought. No those bike belong on a track to be ripped off 30’ jumps not low RPM trails and tech. The KDX has won my heart and she ain’t expensive to take out 😉. Just got home from 48km trail ride in the Raincoast and man I’m always speech less when I look at the ability of these machines to just dominate trails and even flat out logging roads to get to your next opening. So I give this video an absolute 👍🏻👍🏻. One major complaint I have is my clutch does not pull in with ease like your video mentioned. My cable is lubbed and in line right but... I’ve heard you can put washers behind the nuts on the clutch springs so I may try that. Or just buy an aftermarket boysen clutch kit or a magura hydronic clutch kit. Cheers man !!🍻

That was a great review! Ten years ago I bought an 89 KDX with 94 inverted shocks, no lights, but a brand new, rebored cylinder (not Nickosil). I paid $260. I spent the next ten years (and about $900 more) slowly bringing it back into reliable running condition (it’s actually been pretty damn reliable except for some leak issues which I finally fixed with new seals and a little JB Weld). It still doesn’t have lights, and could use a new kick starter gear, but it runs like a champ! My son has ridden it the whole time, but finally graduated to a 2001 CR250R, which has proven to be a beast. Now I get the KDX for myself. Sure, I’m nearing 60, and sure as hell don’t have the skills I once had, but the KDX is perfect for me. I just recently bought some .38kg front springs from Jeff Fredette to replace the paltry .33kg factory ones, and I’m looking forward to trying them out this spring. Not looking for an MX front suspension, just something more suitable for my 200lb. ass.

This review is simply spot on. Simply reworking the fork cartridge valves pretty much fixes the complaints up front. Have never ridden my 2003 in the desert, but in the woods it's hard to beat. Sorry to hear this one "died", I can't imagine ow one could kill it.

Great review! They really are amazing bikes! Just by pure luck I picked one up a few years ago as my first 'real' bike. It was ugly as hell with all kinds of blemishes, but it only set me back $900 and it had a fresh motor. I rode the hell out of it and it gave me almost no problems. It was also great preparation for the brutal yz250 I got next. I can't recommend them enough, especially as starter bikes.

Excellent review and spot on IMO. The KDX is a gem and I was very sad to see it go.

Your review nailed it. I was loaned one that had the front end swapped from a kx250 and reloaned to me. It was one of the most fun bikes I've ever rode. I rode it everyday for three weeks. It made me a kawi sympathizer

Awesome video of yours, it seems like reviews now days focus more on the getting the best shot of the guy riding the bike rather than going into detail about every bolt and nut on the bike. You deserve way more subscribers than you have for the hard work you put in. After watching this video I was hooked to your channel. I hope your racing career works out. Keep up the good work you deserve all the praise you get!

Fantastic Review! I bought my '95 KDX200 pre-owned when I was in college. I gave something like $1,000, and I rode it a moderate amount of time (I was in college after all, the days of playing in the mountains, riding dirt bikes and atvs all day long had come to an end, without my knowledge). After graduating, getting married, building a house....that KDX still sat in the same garage, so I decided to fully restore it! One set of stock radiator shroud graphics were left in the world (it seemed) and had to import those from England. I couldn't find the swingarm graphics, so I made them on my PC using photos of KDXs and vinyl sticker printer paper, that I then put a clear sticker and clear coat paint over top of for protection. Looks good! Anyway, the bike looks amazing. I took it down to the frame, welded any trouble spots, sanded primed and painted the entire bike. New plastic, seat, a modern headlight and front fender....The bike looks like a 2021 KDX 200. I'm not going to advertise on someone else's channel, that would be wrong, but I would love to show you guys the bike. All I have left to do is put the pipe on, and attached the front brake hydraulic line. Some tweeks, and I bet that, even though it hasn't ran for 10 years, that bike will start on the 3rd kick. :D Love my KDX!

You ride that bike pretty hard. I really like the kdx200. The 220 feels flat and lazy to me but is all we seem to have around here. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!!

For a while earlier this year, KDX 200's seem to have become popular. I can see why now. Good video!

My KDX200 is 1200 km away from me, and I haven't missed my bike as much as much as I do now, after watching this video. Loved these bikes! ❤

Great review of the awesome KDX. I can’t tell you how pissed off I am after missing a cheap one with bugger-all km on it a couple of years ago. They are rare now in good nick and I’d buy one in a heartbeat.
