According to legend, this is the place where Sati Devi immolated herself after feeling humiliated for not being invited to her father Daksha's Yagna. This act of self-sacrifice turned her into a stone, and Kottiyoor is believed to be the place of her transformation and eventual liberation.
Kottiyoor is one of the rare temples where both Lord Shiva and Sati Devi are worshipped together.
