Initially I didn't understand the video or the lyrics. Now I do. The bumbling male teacher represents us. He is awkward and makes so many mistakes, but he wants to love. He loves the female teacher but doesn't know how to adequately express that love to her. His errors lead to a failed attempt to express his love. Only at the end does he find a way to express that love by belting out his feelings in a song. When we give all we have with pure love (charity the purest form of love), no matter how many mistakes we make a long the way, we will be able to impact the lives of those we share that love with. But the message here is that it is only through our errors, sins and mistakes that we become humble enough to recognize the most important people to love. AND - it doesn't mean that those we have loved will love us in return. This is why the song ends with a mike drop cliff hanger... will the female teacher respond to his love? But when we love purely, something magical happens regardless of the acceptance of love. In the process the old parts of us die and a new person is born. Our greatest loves in life will cause us the greatest pain, but can have the greatest transformative power. But our dreams can only live when something else dies within us. The other players in the video echo these themes, making mistakes, sometimes performing well, but generally struggling with real life, with both the good and the bad. The song reflects on the personal lives of the Keane band members. The effects of touring took their toll on Tim Rice-Oxley's marriage to Jayne, and they split up in 2012 after seven years of marriage. It was after the break-up that he wrote this song, still undoubtedly loving his wife. Tom Chaplin also hit rock bottom and nearly lost everything through his drug addiction, then miraculously recovered with a renewed focus on family and the most important things in life. Love Keane, my favorite band. And this is why.
