I’ve heard this movie was inspired by how Joe Gibbs and the now Commanders handled/ reacted to the ‘87 NFL players’ strike. They went 3-0, and eventually, their replacements/ scabs got Super Bowl rings

This is based on something that happened in the 80s with the Redskins...they brought in Replacement players in the NFL and the team did better than the actual team and then they brought the Pros back near the end of the season.

Yes “replacement players” are a thing. During the players strike in the 90s this happened. The term for them was “scabs” though.

They were used during spring training in 1995, then in the 1st week in April the real players came back and had extended spring training.
