I have a 2CH that came with a universal head and like yours, no gear. I believe my head is quite rare, it is adjustable in both axis and also has a quill, so you can drill a hole at a compound angle. I looked a number of years to find the correct gear, My mill drives the head at a higher speed than the horizontal 50 taper, and has a separate speed chart for the vertical head. Mine had some gear noise that I was able to minimize by shimming the head out---Love those Kearney & Trecker mills they are rock solid

I agree with you on the usefulness of a horizontal mill in a smaller job shop and hope to get one for myself at some point. That clunk which was directly proportional to speed gets me concered about the head. Time for a teardown/inspect session!! :-) Colin

You were fortunate to find the proper drive gear for your vertical head.. I have the same head on a 2hl universal for which I had to machine a drive gear....The problem I had was that the driven and drive gears are different sizes.. I bought the head several years ago with no drive gear and had to figure out what size the drive gear had to be made, which cutter to use, what lead to use, (good thing I have a model h dividing head and a low lead attachment with all the drive gears) etc....The head is up and running now and is a nice addition to the universal head and slotting attachment I have for my 2hl... Cheers! Mike in Louisiana

Keith: Great buy! I had to make one for a #5 KT once, it was a lot more work than $200.00. Don't forget to grease the drive gear when you put it on, that may be some of the noise, also check for proper gear clearance when it is on the overarms that could cause noise also. I agree with you, I would clean the inside of the head, people let these things set and the grease gets old and dried out. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

Hi Keith I have just watched the K&T head attachment and noticed two pins sticking out from the head where it mounts on the overhead supports which did not appear to be out very far thus not pushing the pins in and wondered if the two pins were locking pins causing the noise. Keith, If that head hasn't been used in 3 years, the grease is probably like dry mud. By loading it up with fresh grease and running in on small jobs (no major hogging), perhaps the grease will work into the bearings and gears and it will quiet down. It does sound like dry gears and/or dry bearings. Glad to see you got the gear! A worthwhile investment, indeed! Thanks for the video! Now, you are going to have to get some large shell mills, fly cutters, etc. and hog 375 thou per pass! Thanks again for sharing! Have a good one! BTW . . . how's the shop coming? Dave

Great video Keith. Thanks for posting. I just finished rebuilding the v-head on my 2K. It was worse than yours....completely seized. There's a lubrication manual on the VM site, and most of these heads do not take grease....they take oil. Mine is a universal high speed head, and turns in both directions, as you indicated in the video, for milling in just about any angle imaginable.. I just finally got it all back together yesterday, and oiled it up, and it runs as quiet as a mouse now. You'll be very happy once you pull it apart and clean it. Glad you found the seemingly unobtainium drive gear. We both know someone who has been looking for one of those for quite some time.

Hi Keith, this gear and its holder are a really interesting find. Keith Fenner has a very good video about how he got the missing gear custom made for his K&T. He also shows installation and removal of the universal head on his mill. One observation I would make based on my own universal milling head (Modern 2LU) is that the clearance between the two gears is critical for smooth running at high RPM. I will be changing the seals on my spindle as it leaks oil as it is. I was wondering, if you had lowered the head onto the ram bars after sliding the bars inside, maybe the clearance would have been a little more and the rattling less evident. May be worth a try. Enjoy the "new" head!!! Daniel
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+AtelierDBurgoyne Yep, I have seen Keith Fenner's video from some time back. Thank goodness that I did not have to have a gear custom made or try and make one myself. Spur gears are pretty straight forward to make but helical gears have lots of variables with them that making a matching one is not as easy as one would think. Fenner has the Model 2HL while mine is a 2H - his is what they considered the "Light" version and it has some differences, one of which being that the main horizontal spindle is 40 taper instead of the larger 50 taper on my mill. As for the noise, I am pretty sure that the problem lies inside the head and is not the drive gears. I had the advantage of being able to listen to the head run and feel it as well and it was pretty obvious to me that the tick is inside. I also know that the entire head is rather stiff compared to the other one that my friend had. As such, I really think that a tear down is in order. Hopefully, it is nothing major once I get inside.

Hey Keith, you made a nice find and it's great to see your K&T up and working. Do you need to put some high pressure gear lube on the gear on the 50 taper drive spindle? That might quiet down that head and get her to run smoother. Just a thought that came to me..

+John Bare I will probably wait until I get my new shop built at home where I can tear it down and leave the parts laid out on a table while I am working on it. That is one of the issues I have working at the museum is that it is hard for me to leave things laying around for periods of time since there are so many others using that same space.
@joemitchem57078 жыл бұрын
I worked on K&T's for years at a large manufacturing plant. Be sure and put plenty of grease on your new drive gear. If I were you, I would remove the swivel with the head still on the machine and check out the internal gears. It's easy to do with an engine hoist, just run a cable/lifting strap down the draw bolt hole with it in the vertical position. Be sure and line up the marks on the gears when you put it back together with plenty of grease on everything.

Keith, I'm Guessing that V head attachment drawbar has a 'thread saver' where the very top (end) of the drawbar is used to screw the drawbar fully into the attached taper accessory and then the nut below it is used to tighten the whole bar. If that's the case, then the nut on the drawbar is the wearing thread rather than wearing the thread on the bottom end of the drawbar. And so that tightening nut thread should be kept fairly well oiled to reduce its wear as much as possible !

@Thewaldo123458 жыл бұрын
We've got a 70 year old Cincinnati model 3. It uses the same 50 taper tool holder in either mode. Don't use it much since we have the CNC's but it is handy occasionally when we need to take some heavy cuts.
@VintageMachinery8 жыл бұрын
For production work, you just can't beat a CNC mill, but for the occasional one off part, the horizontal is a beast of a machine that you can usually crank out a single part faster than drawing it up, programming it for CNC, proofing the program and making the part with CNC. For the work that I do, my horizontal mill is an essential machine in the shop!

Hello Keith, Very interesting that universal head and I did see it in several video's but never thought that it was parked there. Hi Keith, It's my understanding that a 'Universal' description is applied to a mill with a swiveling table, not one with both horizontal and vertical capability. I know of someone with a Victoria mill, horizontal only and described in the brochure as a Universal with swiveling table.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Paul Compton The K&T mills were sold in two variations - plan and universal. The main difference between the two was the swivel option on the table, which mine does not have. But to confuse things, they also called the heads like this a "universal head".
@PeterWMeek9 жыл бұрын
Another great video. I really like that vertically-adjustable ball suspension. Combined with the two-arm crane it really allows a tremendous freedom of motion for easing the head into position. It's a little surprising that there is no positive inward adjustment for the two clamping bars that "grab" the dovetail. Maybe you could put a large clamp (with light pressure) across them as you tighten them, or maybe just a lever or pry-bar to push them tight onto the dovetail as you tighten them. Rigidity is everything when doing heavy milling. Thinking about it, I have a couple of ideas for how to set up either an easy prying mechanism or a clamping mechanism; let me know if these are of any interest.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Peter W. Meek The dovetail pieces actually have a notch in them so that when they are engaged they cannot slide out - pretty cleaver design. You have to loosen the bolts enough to slide them out of the notch to get them to slide from side to side. No clamp is needed.

Hey Keith, watching this video I was thinking that noise sounds like a gear knock then later on when you were handling the gear I had the thought that perhaps the vertical head is going on too far in relation to the gear and the ends of the teeth are lightly clipping the drive lugs. That would about match the speed of the knock, but I can't tell if they stick up that far or not. It could also be a raised burr on one of the gears. I would check for witness marks on the lugs and the teeth in the back of the head before tearing it apart.
@jusb10669 жыл бұрын
+bcbloc02 i was thinking a tight spot inside the head, so the gear backlash knocks a bit

+bcbloc02 i was thinking the same thing, also, it didnt look like he had the over arm supports sticking out to help line everything up.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+bcbloc02 I am pretty sure that the noise was inside the head and not behind it, but it is hard to tell. Regardless, I think it needs a teardown and good cleaning. When I got it, it was really stiff and you could not turn it by hand - the other head my friend had would turn by hand, so no matter what, I think it needs to be cleaned really well.

+Arlyn Smith One of the three grease zerks that I pumped up actually pumps grease onto the drive gear so that you do not have to pull the head off to grease it for a production setup, so it did get grease. As for the parking attachment, I am pretty sure that the one that Adam will be building is a lot simpler than the one I have. I have seen some pictures of what was on a mill like his and it is not nearly as complicated. I am still looking forward to watching him build his though!

Great video, very similar v head to the Adcock and Shipley 1ES horizontal mill if a bit larger. mine has he same iso40 taper. I've been thinking of a strip down and inspection , so looking forward to your strip down video when ever you do it. Thanks.

Enjoyed the video, Keith. Question, and I might have missed it or it was not videoed, but I didn't see the overhead/arm supports extended into the universal head before it was pushed back onto the drive, which would be necessary, would it not, to set proper gear mesh/depth/loading? Just an observation. Am always looking forward to each new video you put up. :)
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+rohnerw I may not have made it real obvious, but the arms were engaged in the head when I got it on the machine.

Keith, Congratulations on getting the mill running. Could you have manufactured your own gear on your friends universal mill?
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Richard Lathrop I would still need the lead attachment to make the dividing head turn while the table feeds, so neither of us are really set up for cutting helical gears.

What is the shaft protruding out the right side of the head? Is it for extending the Quill? Great video, looking forward to the check out of the head. keep em comming, Greg
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Gregory West It is actually for indicating off of when setting up the head - kind of a standard built into the head.

+Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org Then how do you extend the quill... or do you?

Hello Keith, Great judgement with the vertical gear thing!
@newandoldtech56348 жыл бұрын
How do you know when the gears are properly aligned? There dont seems to be any guides or stuff like that. My initial thought was that you rested the weight of the head on the gears, and wondered if that was correct and, if not, there could be problems with that.
@VintageMachinery8 жыл бұрын
+new and old tech It is designed so that it all properly lines up when you put it in place and tighten things down. No real way to adjust it - it is just right...

On a Bridgeport, the Zerk fittings on the table are for way oil not grease. Is there any chance that the Zerks on the head are for spindle oil? Rick
@PeterWMeek9 жыл бұрын
+Rick Swanberg - Excellent observation. I think Adam Booth (Abom79) may mention this. Someone has sent him a manual for this type of machine with a lot of good information of this sort.
@kleinerbub849 жыл бұрын
+Rick Swanberg Absolutely an important note! I got an old lathe, it's spindle runs only at 480 rpm max. It's bronce bearings require Oil, NOT grease. I did lubed it the first time wrong and the bearings got very very warm. Have a nice day guys

Keith on a similar subject do you know if brown and Sharpe had a vertical atachments for the smaller mills around 1908? trying to figure a way to set one up.

Not sure. I would be willing to bet they do. I think there is some older B&S literature up on my web site at www.vintagemachinery.org if you want to look.

Will you be moving this mill into your new home shop Keith? Looking forward to your mill head inspection/rebuild and fabrication of its support crane. Cheers.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Rain Coast To be determined. I will probably move the horizontal to my home shop and I will probably find a second vertical mill so that I can leave one at the museum and have one at home also. Should I find a larger horizontal mill, I may leave the 2H at the museum and take the bigger one home. Lots of things to figure out.... Bottom line though, I want to have at least a vertical mill at both the museum and my home shop.

Keith, would it have been possible to make that part? It would have been difficult, and I'm not sure how difficult cutting helical gears is (I imagine it's easier with a horizontal mill) but it seems like something you could make.

couldn't see any kind of orientation indicators, are you planning to fit this perhaps with some kind of graduated ring? it may be possible to engrave/fit one onto the ring of the seat as there looks to be about 3/4 inch of space there.
@VintageMachinery8 жыл бұрын
+bluegreenash Not quite following you - there are graduations on the swivel when you rotate the head so that you can read the angle it is positioned in.

ok, i couldn't see the indicator, i was wondering if you were going to machine one yourself

Hi Keith, after all that grease you pumped in did you get any grease spin out between the spindle and the housing? I have that problem with my millrite and was wondering if that is somewhat normal? Thanks!
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+JC S I have not dug into thing far enough yet to really know. I suspect that the seals might be leaking though.
@morrisgallo23619 жыл бұрын
Like Paul Jones I wondered if you could make a gear and mount on 50 taper. I've seen you make straight tooth gear so wonder why not an angled straight tooth.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
+Morris Gallo Helical gears are a lot more complicated and I really don't have the lead attachment for the mill to get the spiral cut. I could probably rig it up, but no matter what, I think the cash for this part would probably be cheaper than setting the mill up to make it!
@hitoortega16169 жыл бұрын

Ahah - ebay rocks sometimes :) Great find. Can just imagine your satisfaction at getting that head usable. Noise is a bit concerning -- wondered if you greased the bevel gears when you installed. As you mentioned, a tear down would probably be useful.
