Have you read Ways of Seeing by John Berger? It's super eye opening in general but there's a great bit specifically about the way that women are forced to contantly percieve themselves due to them being constantly surveyed by men (so they become so aware of how they are acting/ presenting themselves) whereas men can make throwaway comments etc. and it not contribute to the way they're percieved in general.
