I did something similar once but crossed the lapel through the inside of the legs and out, and as the struggled to break the grip the lapel inadvertently crushed dudes nuts.

So is wearing spandex and getting so sweaty that you can be more defensively irresponsible. Its the sport aspect of the gi. Chill out.

Honestly , the gi introduces lots of friction , and it encourages pinning , rather than two guys sitting on their butts in spandex playing leglock games against each other. While neither form of Jiu Jitsu perfectly simulates self defense (because strikes are not allowed) gi simulates self defense more than no gi because it is mainly about pinning . Most self defense situations will occur in clothes and on asphalt or concrete or some non slippery surface that would allow for pulling guard and getting under someone to leglock them (which is very unrealistic in self defense where kicks/stomps to the face are allowed). Asphalt and clothing bring in the element of friction (different from spandex and slippery mats). Strikes make pinning and positional dominance way more important than “look at me pull guard so I can enter leg locks “. The old school of BJJ (gi / pinning as a priority) was much closer to self defense , or being “realistic” than is the new game of no gi. That being said , both no gi and gi are sports that are totally valid as sports. But , for self defense, the version of BJJ that prioritizes upper body pins and positional dominance (gi) is the one that will better cross over to self defense
