Paul Newman was so effortlessly good in this that he made the whole process of acting--understanding, planning, technically priming, and then projecting--pretty much disappear. Its not an easy character to comprehend or play, but Newman pulled it off in every aspect, both the small, subtle scenes, like this one, and the larger scale moments like when his mother dies. IMO, one of the finest performances of the sixties in American film, which is saying something.

1988; Hippie English teacher in 11th grade played this movie in class. After watching it we had to write a paper on how society treats heroes. How they’re built up so quickly only to be torn down. And how society tries to isolate the individual and force conformity. A great movie on its own, but watch it through that lens and pay attention to how those traits manifest themselves so casually and “normally” is incredibly alarming. Since that day, was, is and will always be my all time favorite movie. Never stops delivering.

Nice little detail: Luke does not even look at his cards. It is like he is deliberately playing to lose or simply does not care about it. Such negligence (in lack of better word) is both awe-inspiring and horrifying. This movie is great with lots of nuances. It is like Luke is a person who excels at something and then suddenly blunders himself completely for some petty reason and it is a pattern.
@bicdeez007 Жыл бұрын
He excels because he doesn't care. He realizes how futile it is. He's simply passing time up until the point his mother dies. After that, he cares only about escaping since they wouldn't let him go to his mother's funeral.
@ericthegeneric16115 ай бұрын
Whatever Luke does it comes easy to him. I believe he went to jail on purpose because he had heard it was a hard place so he went there and he conquered it easily. From there he gave up on the world. Mama tough life and the military tough life and the married life and now the prison life. Nothing was hard for Luke. Shit he figure it out in a couple of days.

I play a game here and there with friends and you're absolutely right. We play Texas hold em and bluffing is the best part because people will start talking across the whole table predicting you've got the nuts or some big hand then you show them deuce and 7 and they all flip out yelling and laughing. Then the best is when they think you're a bluffer but then you do get the nuts and take em all.

If you ever did time, you met at least one guy like Dragline. He hated Luke at first because Luke was different, but it secretly intrigued him. He admired Luke and we then learn Dragline wasn't a bully at all, just a big galoot with a kind heart. He no longer wanted to be top dog, he just wanted to sit next to his boy. For the rest of the film they are inseparable, and Dragline keeps Luke alive thru love and memories.

Breakdown of the famous and eventually-famous actors starring on this movie (excluding Kennedy and Newman): Strother Martin (Captain) - Famous support actor in LOTS of movies, including my personal favourite "Fool's Parade" with Jimmy Stewart and some punk-kid named Kurt Russell, and he would also team up with Paul Newman again, years later, in "Slapshot". Lou Antonio (mullethead/Koko): Went on to make many TV appearances, including "Lokai" in Star trek (TOS)- "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". Dennis Hopper (Babalugats) - Went on to to play many iconic roles, "Easy Rider", "Apocalypse Now", to name a few. Wayne Rogers (Gambler): Went on to play Trapper John McIntyre in the M*AS*H* TV series. Morgan Woodword (Walking Boss) - Numerous roles as the Bad Guy in TV and film (including Dr. Simon Van Gelder in Star Trek -TOS). J.D. Cannon (Uppity Yankee) - Went on to be a regular as a cop in the TV series "McCloud", with Dennis Weaver. Anthony Zerbe (Dog Handler) - Numerous TV & film appearances, including MY personal favourite as "Matthias", in "The Omega Man", with Charlton Heston. Ralph Waite (Alibi) - went on to star in "The Waltons" TV series as the Dad, as well as the helicopter rescue pilot in "Cliffhanger", with Sylvester Stallone. Harry Dean Stanton - Went on to star in MANY films, including my two personal favourites: "Kelly's Heroes" with Clint Eastwood, and "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver. Joe Don Baker - Went on to star as Sheriff Buford Pusser, in the first "Walking Tall" film. Think that mostly covers it.
