Strother Martin(the warden="Captain") should have gotten some sort of award for this. No one could have done it better. Perfect timing, delivery, everything.

One of the best lines in movies of all time! I have used Strother Martin's delivery as best as I could many times. Over the years I have become a little better but Martin delivers the line perfectly.
@julianedge64312 жыл бұрын
The line is repeated by Newman, prior to being shot, with the word 'a' before 'communicate'. 'Mis-quote', my arse! Ralph Raffio (author of '15 things you may not know about the Paul Newman classic') is a dick.

I couldn't agree more. I keep telling my children, "Figure this movie out, and you'll figure me out". It's been my favorite movie for as long as I can remember. This particular quote is overrated in my opinion though. If I had to pick a quote for this movie....."Just standing in the rain, talking to myself". I mean....Paul Newman gives this movie amazing acting, and Strother Martin gets the "iconic quote"? Seriously, just try to buy a Cool Hand Luke shirt without that damn quote.

I've always said that this is one of the top three performances to never be nominated for an Oscar (the others IMO are John Cazale in The Godfather Part 2 and Larry Hagman in Fail-Safe). Martin OWNS the screen every time he steps foot in front of it. Plus, Conrad Hall should've won for this, too (I believe he WAS nominated); every frame is like a painting. One of the most beautifully photographed films of all-time!

I never taught that was a lady, but I taught that Strother Martin was a member of the band. Seriously. When my sister bought the CD (1996, I was 10 years old), she shows me the "book cover" before plays the music and I saw the Strother Martin name credited at the end of the Civil War lyrics - and Strother always reminds me a male name (I live in Brazil). Well, at 10yo I didn't speak English and I also didn't know that "What we've got here" is a quote from a movie - in Brazil nobody calls it "quote", we tell "famous phrases".

If the warden had just cut Luke some slack in the beginning making him stay at the camp when his mother died to do some chores around the place under Carr, maybe this wouldn’t have happened. But he was a slimebag that wanted to exert dominance and control in a nice way. Putting Luke in the hotbox for 2-3 days for nothing he did wrong simply because his mother died was his way of saying “you keep going, but I’ll show you who’s boss!”
