This video shows how my parents keep their German Shepherd out of the cat room, so that their Ragdoll cats can eat in peace. They also did this on their 6-panel basement door to keep the dog out of the litterbox.

I would like to do this with my basement door but I have no idea how the hinging or pins were put in place on this....can anyone help out with the solution?

HI, there are a few hinges that would work, but any that provides a pin on the back side so that the can swing back and forth. I tried to add a link to a photo of one that would work it it did not post. Search Lowe's website for: Gatehouse 4-in Steel Barrel Bolt. two will be needed. you may need a space under the little door, since it does not look like it is flush with the larger door.

Well, I finally made my own version of this! It wasn't that easy. I cut the panel from a 150 year old kitchen door, certainly not as straight as the excellent carpenter who did yours. I couldn't remove the door as it's so wide and heavy which made things much more tricky! I drilled holes and bought some 3mm steel rod which I cut two lengths of about 50mm. I crunched up 2 old biro pens and retrieved the springs as suggested by someone clever. Once it was all fitted, I had to redo it as the pins were too high up the panel and it was too heavy for the cat to push easily (150 yr old oak!). I ended up putting them just a couple of centimetres off centre and now, after a week, the cat is finally understanding that she can get in and out through this strange thing. Many thanks again!! John x

I know this is old, but you can set the pins in the frame then dado both sides of the door from the bottom to the spot where the hinge should be. After that, you just slide the door on over the hinge pins.

This is so cool mam. Thanks for sharing with us. My parents' home is also very old and has the 4 panel doors all over the house. This idea is something to really consider for our cat at home as it keeps the elegance and naturalness of the house intact while making the environment cat friendly also. Simply brilliant! :)

Very clever when you are trying to keep dogs out of the cat room, but this only works when cats are smaller than dogs. It will not work if dogs are smaller than cats. You cannot keep smaller animals out of where larger animals fit.

Thanks for sharing.I have searched many "Build your own cat flap" videos until I saw this - this is the one I will make. It won't be in a door as such, rather I will cut a flap out of the wooden shed so that the dogs can go in to their beds.

I have these doors and this looks like an awesome idea except for the tails possibly getting caught ..ouch. I would also need to figure out a locking system for when I don't want the cat coming through. Those plastic cat doors you can buy look so tacky on a nice door.
@Floppycats
@Floppycats 4 жыл бұрын
Our cats figured out how not to get their tails caught - they would literally hold the door open with their tails until they were fully through. Yes, plastic ones look very tacky.

What he did is probably either A) Made the door himself, or B) Probably the easier thing to do, is take the cut out, split it in half, OR replicate the cutout. Before you put the two sides together, notch out room for the pegs in the door and panelss, insert pegs into the door, sandwich the two pieces of the panel together and viola.

This is one of those "better on paper" ideas. Looks great, works well, but I can see my cats getting a tude, running through the house and hitting the panel of another door at mock 1. So then, I have build them a wheelchair ramp too... Actually, great concept, probably the best I have seen. I would use it, but the room for the litter box is a laundry room so while two of my cats are fine, 1 cat is scared of the room even if the washer is off, but they will walk by it no problem. So, I am going to put a hole in the wall to avoid the noise and room altogether.
@Floppycats
@Floppycats 5 жыл бұрын
perhaps, it's better no paper for you, but it worked super well for my parents and their situation. yes if one of your cats is scared of the laundry room, then i would most definitely move the litterbox, unless you want to start cleaning up accidents around the house!
@BPRescue
@BPRescue 5 жыл бұрын
I was joking, indicating my cats would get accustomed to the swinging panel, then get playful bolting around the house like they do and attempt to jump through another door without said swinging panel. Actually, I think this is a great idea, and let's just say with my woodworking background and type A personality, I am not easily impressed...
