We like building fires too, but don’t have a pit at our camp. We build them on top of the ground in three different spots on the 20 acres depending on the work site. The area, usually around 15 to 20 feet in diameter, is surrounded with the trunks of trash trees cut into 24 inch lengths. We will burn them for days adding to them daily until the, “Job is done too.” Like y’all, we will sit around them after dark watching them burn. Occasionally roasting hot dogs or sausage and fixing S’mores for desert while sharing a bottle of wine. Life is good. Thank the Lord!!!

I do things a little bit differently when I'm burning. First, I dig my pit just a little bit deeper (not much more than what you have). Then when I get a good hot fire going I break off as much of the tree tops as I can. Keep in mind I'm using a skid steer with a grapple rather than an excavator, but It could work the same. I pile them on there, then start putting the bigger stuff in. One trick that I learned is to keep a leaf blower close by and shoot some air down into the pit to get it burning good. The tops usually burn rather quickly and it gets the "bigger stuff" burning good. The last thing I put on the fire is the stumps. Usually by then the fire is hot enough that the stumps will burn up and the dirt falls off of them. The fire usually burns for a day or two. Keep in mind, much of what I have been burning is oak and hickory which tends to burn really hot. When it's done I might be left with some charcoal, but for the most part it will disintegrate. Then I cover up what is left of the hole. I'm not saying that your method is "right or wrong" and I'm not saying that mine is either. I'm just telling you how I do it. I do think that the blower is the key. A fire needs three things to burn. Fuel, heat and oxygen.

Mike- in your spare time, check out air curtain burners. Your could probably acquire a gas engine blower like firefighters use and rig it up to blow across the fire pit. They have various models with 12" to 36" fan diameter and are powered by Briggs and Stratton or Honda, depending on the manufacturer of the fan. Depending on where the air stream goes, It will provide more oxygen to the fire. It would speed up the burning process and reduce particulates. We had a commercial tree processing site that covered several acres catch fire. The site ground up trees and brush and produced mulch that they sold for landscaping purposes. The fire affected raw material as well as huge mulch piles. It made no sense to pump clean water onto the fire and have a contaminated runoff to deal with. They dug a deep pit and used a trailer mounted blower to create a blast furnace effect in the pit. They put whole root balls into the pit and they were incinerated. They ran the burner 24/7 for a couple of weeks and took care of most of the material on site. Little smoke produced. I think you could do the same thing on a smaller scale. You drove right by this general area on your trip west last year. It was near the junction of I-94 and I-494 in the northwest Minneapolis suburban area. That area is all commercial area today.

Proper tools for the job. Just to share a little.... The Navy (Aviation) always emphasized "Proper tool for the job". for obvious reasons. My specialty was hydraulics systems on Helicopters and fixed wing. Anything to do with the flight controls, landing gear, tires, wheels, breaks, all hydraulic actuators. Loved it. So I share this to say how much I enjoy watching you operate all your equipment with precision. So as I'm watching I can see how all the systems work on your machinery. Good evening! Some high school buddies came out to shoot some targets and zero in some deer rifles. One had slipped on the mount and the rings let the scope slip too. Much better after all that got tightened up. Two former work colleagues came to the farm also, and zeroed in the rifle that one will use during the season. I give them a tour of the farm and they filled me in on what has happened since I retired. My brother is supposed to come over tonight. A good day! Good to see you starting site prep for the new sawmill pavilion. “It’s not a good plan but I have a plan and a full tank of fuel!!” I suspect Mike’s half-baked plans are better than most of the rest of our fully baked plans!

I live at 4700 ft northern Arizona. We fight the Arizona state flower…. The tumble weed. I still have a bit of a yard if you call it that, mostly we farm rocks, rocks are always coming up after rains, so we pick rocks out of the horse pens to keep footing safe. Now with the rain we are getting weeds will come like crazy. I mean some people let them go but I maintain my 4 acre piece of heaven like a golf course, plus it was neglected before I bought it so still landscaping and things I want to change. I do NOT miss 1 day of mowing every week at my place in Iowa.

Mike knows, to burn green (wet) wood, a good bed of coals has to be fed continuously or they will die. Unless there's a huge stockpile of "dry" material to start the fire, it's best to keep an established bed of coals fed until all the green material is consumed. Kudos to Melissa's channel yesterday, I enjoyed her at the range. She shot some double ought buckshot. That is good home protection ammo. I keep a Mossberg 12 pump hanging on my closet doorknob by it's sling. My shoes, I pull off right there also. So if my key FOB goes off or I hear breaking and entering, I jump out of bed, slip my shoes on, grab my gun and go. Only my 12 has a pistol grip, no shoulder stock, and the barrel is only 18" long. I bought a large quantity of military grade buckshot awhile back and took my 12 to my range and after a dozen rounds, my wrists were done! Reminds me of a funny story, many years ago, many, I took an old double barrel to the machine shop at work and had the barrels cut to 18". Then one day, at my uncle's farm, my brother and I were target shooting. We had a variety of guns including the 12. When he decided to shoot my 12, he grabbed it and shouldered it, and just as he was about to shoot it a crow flew over and he quickly raised the gun up to shoot the crow. Well, I had loaded it earlier with 3" magnums. By raising the gun so quickly, he didn't have it shouldered well and he accidentally pulled both triggers. His shoulder hurt for a week afterwards. He also missed the crow. Also we nailed a piece of fiberboard on a small pine 35 yards from my pickup and stapled a target on it. The pine was about 6 or 7 inches in diameter. After we both shot 4 rounds into the target with my Marlin 444, the top half of the tree fell over. I've always enjoyed hunting, shooting and reloading. It's just great to see others enjoying it too. All the males in our family would camp out on my FIL’s land before he passed away and my wife and her sisters sold it. I have some great memories of staying up until early morning and sitting around the fire with a few relatives that stayed up talking and watching the fire. You're smothering your fire, it needs oxygen to burn. Get a 4 or 6 inch steel pipe and bury it at an angle so one end is above ground and the other end is down near the base of the fire (not covered by dirt or ashes). This will allow the fire to pull fresh air down to the hot coals to keep the fire going longer. To get a fire started, use your leaf blower to blow forced air down the pipe.

Here we can’t burn… partially it’s not really allowed, but on our property the main tree we have to deal with is Christmas berry. Has the same stuff in it as poison ivy, creates toxic smoke. The grass grows about 18”/week during rainy season, so I mow (brush hog) about every three days. To clear an area like you are I’d have had to move ~40-50 100lb plus rocks and innumerable smaller one. Don’t have an excavator, so what you cleared in a day would take at least a week. I’m envious of your dirt!
