Idk about in the UK, but in the states the govts position is generally that they don't want to be involved in matters of parental supervision. Even though most of us would call this child abuse, it isn't illegal. Just like if a parent was to force their child into a restrictive diet or not allow them to eat certain foods. If a parent didn't get their child Healthcare I would call that abuse, but if it's due to personal beliefs (it doesn't even have to be a tenant of their religion) then it's legal, even if the child suffers or dies because of it. Unfortunately, having children is considered a right and there's no prerequisite or minimum standard of parenting

Damn I feel the same way as kid I had childhood obesity I remember I would always get so depressed AS A KID aftergoing to the doctor because I already knew I was fat af and the doctor was never nice about it and it was literally out of my control what food I was eating there was never food in my dads house he only ate fast food which meant I only ate fast food and at my moms house she didn’t cook so we ate out every night of the week like this family and it’s sad to see a baby is sick from such poor eating habits that the parents are in control of definitely made me emotional. Luckily when I was 12 I learned how to cook but unfortunately in my teen years having more control over what I ate and a job and car meant when I got out of school the chic fil A next to school was an almost every day chicken sandwich and cookies n cream milkshake and then I would feel horrible about my body and over-restrict which just led to me starting a great binging habit (sarcasm) finally at 18 I got sick of it and got really into fitness which unfortunately led me down a different ED path of anorexia, bulimia, and CHSP I did get to really really low unhealthy weight but I thought I looked great. I am still healing my food relationship that has been so damaged since such a young age but I am happy to say I am at a healthy weight and eating more healthy than I used to but I gotta restart my fitness journey from scratch that really flew out the window, but I have visible abs (when I’m not bloated) I never thought that was possible as a little chunky child but it’s hard picking up the pieces that our parents left for us to figure out.

I was working in radiology one day when we had a 3 year old patient who was 130 pounds. We thought it was a mistake on the order from the emergency room until we saw the child. He could barely breathe and used what oxygen he was getting to ask for root beer. The nurses called child protective services, but they were told nothing could be done because over feeding your child isn't considered abuse. It was sad to know these parents were murdering their child, and no one could do anything about it.

I’ve taken out adult molars on kids who are 8 (I.e. they’ve only had that tooth in their mouth for 2 years and it’s broken down so much to the point that it can’t even be fixed). It infuriates me that this is not considered neglect and abuse. Parents should be held accountable and it should be punishable.

In the uk there are no laws surrounding giving your any toddlers or babies junk food. There was a case in 2009 where 2 mothers were arrested for neglect after giving the malnourished babies left over junk food. In my option there should be laws which should make it be classed as abuse if the child is malnourished the parents should be investigated and if there other kids are then it should be classed as neglect and abuse

as a mother who ate all of her vegetables as a kid, it was really hard for me to feed my son, who would gag at vegetables. I thought maybe it was the taste but after so long, we found out he is in the spectrum and these gag-inducing foods probably had nothing to do with the taste but everything with the texture. No, he still doesn't like vegetables. But I found lots of nifty ways to hide veggies. My favorite is "rainbow mash potatoes." Where I take a vegetable of each color, puree it, and add it to mashed potatoes. I do 4-7 colors and arrange them on his plate like a rainbow. The boy tears them up and is none the wiser. What I'm saying is,, you don't have control over what your kid likes, but you do have control of incorporating health foods into the stuff they love.

When I read "gag" in your comment my mine instantly flashedback to how Mashed Potatoes would make me gag. And then vomit. I hated beans, peas, tomatoes, onions, pretty much everything... But I had ZERO SUGAR growing up. I had fruits. And I drank Apple Juice 100% of the time. But it was the kind with less sugar and my mom always watered it down. When I drank pure apple juice it tasted like syrup. I had nothing with sucrose, fructose, or chocolate. I was the tallest, thinnest kid in my grade every year. I lived on chicken nuggets and frozen pizza. But no sodas, no junk food, no processed foods, and I stayed Super active! All day every day!

My dad who insisted on never giving me candy/soda/chips/fast food accept on holidays would plate me the same portion he would eat as a grown man at the age of 5! Yes it would be whole wheat pasta with homemade pasta sauce, meatballs, and salad but I was eating like 2 servings of pasta, 4 large meatballs, a cup of sauce at a time. This cause my stomach to stretch way too much and I felt way to hungry when given an appropriate portion for a small child.

My parents were the kids of parents that grew up in the depression times, my parents would force us to eat all the food on our plate until we sometimes threw up which later caused serious weight gain and depression. I eventually dropped the pounds and went through years of mental strength and discipline to better my body with the right foods but honestly, there's no right way to parent your kids. I don't want to say that what my parents did was justified but, I can understand not wanting food to go to waste. The problem is there's so much food everywhere now that not having enough is no longer an issue. Teach your kid to be happy and how to find it. That's all I think is important.

This was a sensory texture thing, so I made my own fresh and healthy baked and breaded nuggets and potato wedges daily. The breakthrough for him was when he was old enough to start cookery lessons in school. He (24) now eats a varied diet as food textures don't bother him like they did when he was a child.

I thought my step dad was insane when he said pop was for adults and his kids were only allowed it on special occasions or holidays. Or they always had to ask for permission to drink his Mt. Dew. He’s addicted to pop and had it in the house always. Same with the mother. Pop at my house growing up was also always there and I had free reign of drinking it ever since I can remember. Never had to ask. I thought he was so mean back then for trying to enforce the pop is an adult beverage rule on me. I still am not a fan of him, but I grew up and begrudgingly had to admit he was right. He may have been a complete hypocrite, but he was right, kids should not have pop every day. It should be only for special occasions or only in restaurants. Though I do think their parents went a little too far in the other direction as well where they were too restrictive at times. The oldest grew up and ended up neglecting her toddler because she feared him becoming fat. She was skinny. Later find out her mother did the same to her when she was small and extended family had to talk sense into her. The middle boy was somehow able to manage his weight with little effort (or effort that was difficult to see). Though I think his poor diet is catching up to him as an adult and he’s having to make better choices. The youngest struggles with being overweight and being depressed since her teen years. She has a lot of anxiety. I said the parents were too restrictive, but actually it’s a mix. The dad was ultra restrictive and the mom was at some points, but also struggled with giving the kids whatever they wanted. The mom struggled with being severely overweight and mental issues. Many of the same the kids have.

The thing about toddlers is that they generally want to eat what they see their family eating, so if you want them to eat healthier food, you as a parent need to eat healthier food in front if them. Kids absolutely have their own preferences, but you can often adjust things to make them more likely to eat them-my kids like their fresh fruit and veg cut into thinner slices, and they like to have sauces next to the other food instead of on top of it (even if they then immediately put the sauce on their food). Small adjustments like that can make it less of a struggle to get them to eat without adding more work for you.

Me: okay, well that's you're s back when you want it Kid an hour later when she is actually hungry: I'm hungry! Can I have a snack? Me: yep, here are you cucumbers and carrots Kid: yummy! But yeah, people tell me this is controlling and scarring her for life. How about no. Taking away the opportunity for her to learn like healthy foods is actually cruel, and will literally ruin her health for life.

Two fulltime working parents, yet always had 2homemade meals at home (I, myself, learned how to cook full meals at 14yo from them). Parents saying it's not their fault their kids only know fast food are actually people in need of a good cooking teacher that can guide them into how to eat good.

This exactly was one of the main reasons my sister divorced her idiot husband. The poor kids started to get obese and no matter how healthy she cooked for them, when she was not home or when the idiot went with sh_t. It tastes good. It took my sister a while to realise what was going on (mainly because the kids were still gaining weight). As someone who was shoveled fast food as a child, if there's no health or dental consequences, it carries heavily into adulthood and creates extremely unhealthy eating habits as well as deep shame and unhealthy relationships with food. I'm 23 and I'm just now starting to undo the years of poor eating habits demonstrated to me. And I'm really glad that you mentioned it's not always 100% of the parents fault (in some cases absolutely it is) but I grew up poor and in a family of 7, so it was sometimes fast food or go hungry. It infuriates me these parents who have options and resources choose to harm their children in this way.

but fast food is more expensive than cooking dinner. For the price of just 1 of your 7 menus I can make a huge pot of lentil stew that can last a family of 7 for 2 or 3 meals. As an arab living in Europe I think that the main issue with families like the one you grew up in is that they weren't really taught how to cook efficiently (maybe because of industrialisation and the rise of processed food in the 70s), meaning how to make big quantities of healthy yet filling homemade stuff with very few ingredients and very quickly. I feel like in a lot of people's minds, cooking = lots of fancy ingredients, specific ustensils, 3hours in the kitchen. When real cooking should be economical and fast.

This is one thing that I think a lot, when should we start letting our kids have a treat once in a while? In my house, my daughter gets a small treat after doing a chore I didn't ask her to do, or getting an award at school, and if we have some we'll have ice-cream for dessert as part of our summer routine. And my child isn't unhealthy or anything, she's a healthy weight for her age because I make sure her diet is balanced, treats and all, according to her needs. And I'm not perfect or anything, or know everything, I just think that from my experience when you actually have kids and consider all these things as you're raising them it becomes intuitive rather than confusing.

@@kalinkapavlova9398 I'm so glad you make your daughter diet healthy. The only thing here is - pease stop giving her food treats as a reward. It makes a habit and later in life she may be going through hard time and it sooo often ends up with trying to cheer oneself up with a treat (because the brain connects treats with "everything is ok" and tries to get that feeling by getting treats). That's how I got +20 kg in 4-5 years of stressful time. And only now I've discovered what I'm doing - just trying to make the stress go away by eating sweets. And it turns out it's very, very common. And sooo many people are doint this. It all starts the same way with everyone, and it just waited for me to have this one time of my life where the stress was big enough. I had a friend who was the only healthy non obese person in her family. She got a call from her brother when he realized his kids (between 9 - 12) weighed close to 150lbs. She said the call was basically - I'm killing my kids, help me save them. (wife close to 500lbs him over 600lbs) She taught them how to shop and cook. The kids lost weight and got healthy. At the time of her niece's wedding, her dad was below 250 and mom was around 130. Her brother was able to walk his daughter down the aisle - something their dad was too sick and fat to do. As kids get older, the responsibility f the parents goes down, but it never gets to zero. Parents teach their kids bad habits. Even if they don't mean to.

The psychology of this can be seen in pet ownership too. My mom kept feeding my childhood dog to the point of diabetes (and subsequent euthanasia) and later on fed one of my cats treats until she was 18lbs (her bone structure is smaller than my proper weight 10lb male cat). My mom has been very overweight all her life and she copied her emotional relationship with food onto those pets. She thought it was "mean" to allow the cat to be a little hungry to lose weight overtime. "Mean" to not give excessive treats (she pours the bag out onto a paper plate, and even allows the female to finish my male cat's treats too bc he always leaves food. Only eats till he's full). It enrages me. "Kindess" is not always kindess if you are supposed to be the responsible party in the situation. Kindess as a responsible person is providing boundaries and keeping who you're responsible for safe. It took my cat developing a health problem twice requiring surgery and special food for the rest of her life for my mom to lay up. Thankfully growing up my dad kept my brother and I eating properly though I remember she'd buy each of us a bag of doritos and we'd eat the whole bag as a meal. We just had a well regulated appetite so it worked out for us weight wise but I'm sure it took some sort of toll on nutrition during development.

Then gets bent out of shape when they "don't eat well" one day (maybe they're tired of eating the same thing everyday). When she gives her cats treats, she gives them a handful each time. Anytime she has something to eat, she always gives some to her dogs and her bird, every time, doesn't matter what it is (she even did cheesecake one time). Oh and if this sounds like a lot of animals, it is. She's 82, can barely take care of herself, struggles to move around, and insists on taking care of 6 pets. She can't even walk her dogs, just lets them out in her small yard. They're not potty trained and pee on the floor regularly. It's ludicrous and not fair for the animals.
