Keep Your Lantana Blooming All Season Long by Deadheading

Lantana topiaries are relatively easy to care for. Deadheading is the process of removing spent flowers from a plant. Deadheading lantana encourages the plant to produce more blooms and maintain its shape. Simply pinch off any faded or dead flowers using your fingers or a pair of pruning shears. Deadheading regularly throughout the growing season will help keep your lantana looking healthy and vibrant. They require full sun exposure and well-draining soil. Water them regularly, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering. Prune them regularly to maintain their shape and remove any dead or yellowing leaves. Lantana topiaries are also prone to pests such as spider mites and aphids, so keep an eye out for any signs of infestation and treat accordingly.

My understanding is nearly all Lantanas will set seeds, and while the seed pods are green, the birds don't eat them because they are poisonous in that state. The birds will eat them when the seed pods turn black and are no longer poisonous. I'm thinking that pruning the seed pods out while green eliminates the "invasive" nature of the specific Lantana plant, while also reducing the energy drain on the plant. For a few Lantana plants, that may be easy enough to maintain. For the larger Lantanas or a massive planting of Lantana, that could be problematic.

Thank you! I have been trying to find this exact information. I always wondered why my lantana didn't last long. Can I keep the seeds to plant next year?
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals 2 ай бұрын
Yes you can definitely keep the seeds for next year but they do take awhile to grow so start them early. That’s why I think most people just buy the annuals every year but it is doable. Good luck!

I have a tall Lantana and it is growing like mad but spidering out and not staying bunched close. It has tipped over because I did not steak it. How do I prune it back as it has taken over my garden. I love this video because you taught me right after I bought it how to dead head it and it is super pretty and happy, but it is leaning over and I need to fix it, but it is super big...like4-5 ft across and 5 ft tall and it is a Tall Lantana, not one flush with the ground. Your help would be great because I don't want to hurt it and I can't seem to find information about pruning a tall lantana. Thanks very much!

Hi there, it’s super easy! Just take some pruners and cut the branches right where new side shoots are coming out. You can cut them anywhere along the branch, it doesn’t matter where. I heavily prune mine before bringing inside because it does the same thing as yours. I’ll post a video link in another comment below to a video I did on pruning lantana.

Thank you so much for this video on Lantana plants and deadheading. Question though should you also deadhead the flowers when they are looking old and worn or you leave it to go to seed pod and only take that part off?
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals 4 ай бұрын
You can do either, it makes no difference when you deadhead the flower. Also know that there are new varieties out that don’t require deadheading so less maintenance. I don’t mind, it’s my therapy 😂

Now i have berries 😮 is it too late to deadhead? I think they have finished the blooming cycle
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not; you should be able to continue deadheading throughout the season. Just start now and see if you can bounce the plant back to flowering.

I thought a lantsna was a flower, not a tree, unless this a different lantana...
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals 4 ай бұрын
It’s actually a perennial flower so you can train them into topiaries where they develop a trunk like a tree. Many people in warmer climates have them as shrubs. In the northern climates, they are typically sold as annual flowers.

What am I doing wrong? My potted Lantana bloomed beautifully in spring but now in July, there is just lush healthy leaves. I'm in north central Texas temps high 90's to 100. Lantana gets Callaway's slow released bloom boast 14-14-14 every 2 months per instructions. Would my Bougainvillea feed 6-8-10 be better? Lantana gets sun from about 10:30am to sunset. I pinched out the meristems in spring but have not pruned her since. She is in a mix of potting soil, pumice, pine bark and it's well draining. She is in a 2 - 3 gallon ceramic pot on terra-cotta pot feet on a concrete side walk. Help! Thanks!!!

Do you pick off the spent flowers like i do in the video? If not they become seed pods and start developing seeds, which tells the plant to stop focusing a lot of energy into flower production? I do this at least weekly and sometimes twice a week if I have time.

@@BuddhasBotanicals Yes, I pick them off before they become little berries. It doesn't bloom very much at all.

Is it difficult to prune them into "standards" or topiary as you call them?
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals 8 ай бұрын
Not at all. I’m working on some now. Basically start with an upright variety of lantana and simply trim to one growth point. Any suckers or side branches snap off. I’ll try to release a video on it soon.

Lantana Camara is beautiful but leave it in the wild in the right condition and it will turn into a pest. In the Solomon Islands lantana has taken over hundreds of acres of coconut plantations. Without proper pest management, lantana infested areas will become unproductive and a wasteland.
@BuddhasBotanicals
@BuddhasBotanicals 9 күн бұрын
You are 💯 right; in certain areas without winters lantana can be very invasive. Where I am in the northeast, lantana doesn’t survive the winter so it’s very safe to grow.
