Ubunte discontinued its 32-bit support last month. So if you're running a pentium4 or something older, you might revert to Debian etc. Though I'm still getting kernel updates on Bionic 18.04, those will likely subside shortly. Most of my systems are 64-bit now. My music editing and jukebox systems are pentium4 and pentium3. They sill work, so I keep them running off-network.

Most applications still work, or they wouldn't be in the repository. The strange one was chromium browser. It installed just fine, but wouldn't work because the system has only SSE2.

Old is relative. Best thing things for an old acquisition is an SSD, then more RAM, then LMDE 5 which is still available in 32-bit should you need e.g. Lenovo T-62, bought dirt cheap, loaded with LMDE 32-bit and passed to a friend. His comment was "I can't believe how easy this is to use!" That just makes my day, grin. Did the same upgrades for my old Lenovo T-500, except 64-bit. Real happy with that I am, having installed Caliber and the Baen Free Library set. Keep smiling, we're brothers in habits we are.

I'm running Puppy Linux on an Acer Aspire One (year 2010 model, 32-bit, 1GHz CPU, 2GB RAM). Works pretty well as long as I keep the browser updated. Some websites are slow, but offline software runs smoothly.

You can also upgrade the 1GB of Memory to 2GB (and some Aspire One models you can upgrade to 4GB) and the HDD can be upgraded to a SSD to increase the speed. FYI

I recommend everyone to test drive a bunch of them in a VM or as a live CD. I personally prefer Linux lite over Zorin. It just a better feel for me. It's great to have all the options to pick what we like. 😊

That's also a solid choice. I do it usually as the second step. First check it in a VM to see wether or not it feels right, then on bare metal to see potential issues and then install it. Also you can install it alongside your previous OS to keep one foot in the door in case something important does not work or performers badly. That's how I roll for my one and only computer. But then of course you have to clean up grub afterwards. There are a thousand options. And I get it why this is sometimes perceived as bad by new users.

@@ShadowPriestBear pick your flavor. I also recommend ventoy. You install it on a stick, you put bare iso's on it and you can choose the iso to load during boot. Very convenient. All iso's on on single stick ready to boot windows, a rescue os, debían, arch manjaro and much more.

I feel like the hardware would be a bit *too* slow for my use, but it would be PERFECT for a loved one as a data backup. Put something like OMV/Casa to run headless, put it in a corner next to the router and voila. It can backup my mum's photos and important files. Add a tunnel to maintain remotely.

I've never used Belana etcher but I know people recommend it. For anybody interested - the Fedora media writer is really good and it will even write Fedora to a USB, whilst being downloaded and you can tell it to either save the download or delete it when it is finished.

I have quite a lot of experience installing Linux on old computers. Sometimes it works really well and you can use your computer for many things with much more comfort. Unfortunately, sometimes not. It happens that Linux consumes less resources, but in reality it does not work faster because of a crappy video driver or something. But with a little creativity, you can always come up with something interesting.

This is very true. I tried two different distros on an old HP laptop. And although it started getting more and more crappy under windows, none of the distros I have tried (Mint and Pop_OS) improved it and even introduced new problems... Now I'm trying to turn it into a home server with Fedora Server, as it has a large HDD.

@@kondrik3777 Pop_OS by default uses gnome-based graphical shell that can hardly be called lightweight. Mint has a version with xfce, which works a little better (but you may have tried cinnamon, which is somewhere in between). I've had good results with debian+xfce, but it's highly hardware dependent. In the sense that if you only have a basic driver working without any acceleration, it can really work badly. I also had glitches and what looks like a memory leak with lxde on some computers.

And yes, I discovered that there are more lightweight distros, when I later dug deeper into the Linux rabbit hole 😆 I'll see how my home server project turns out, and then maybe I'll try the xfce version of Mint.

I can confirm this.. My media streaming pc suffers with playback stream i am not sure what it is but it does, like i get uStutters of notorious 1fps or something.. That or screen tearing.. Lots of it. Issues that on windows don't happen, still i use linux there for convenience, being faster and for the use case it rather much more be linux.

when i used zorin it introduced a 2 year old bug that everyone knew about because it was in ubuntu but they introduced anyway and it essentially made every app timeout for like a minute before opening, and because they have a horribly slow release cycle I was stuck with it lmao. that's the problem with these ubuntu based distros that only have a couple of custom themes and backgrounds.

you kinda missed one important features of Zorin OS here, which is it have warning when user run an .exe file and prompt them to use WINE do they can run it. it is a very significant feature it have baked in, which the target audience of this video probably need but don't have the knowledge of great video as always man!

Linux mint cinnamon 64bit still feels faster and snappier and takes less ram. Tested on my acer aspire one 725 netbook with 2GB ram with a slow hard drive. (Ony window 8.1 feels as fast) Zorin was slower. I would recommend it on a core i3 or better witth 4gb ram

I realized halfway that I had this laptop! Of course, mine is red and 32bit, so you can't blame me. I was planning on either Debian or Alpine, and installing KDE (the minimal version) after installing it because its on Windows 8 and runs fairly well. I just don't like how long it takes to find apps that are 32 bit compatible, so its a fresh feeling to use either snap, flatpak or even apt.

peppermint is a hell of a light more lightweight however zorin is a good start and since its based on ubuntu alot easier to google help peppermint is based on debian and has slight differences that a new user would end up getting confused on

There's quite a few lightweight options for low-spec laptops. I just installed Lubuntu on my HP Stream 14 (4GB RAM, 64 GB SSD), and it's running smooth and fast. I also tested Debian out on this machine for a few weeks. Just as impressive, with minor drawbacks here and there.

In a drawer of my office desk at work I also still keep buried exactly such an Acer Aspire One that I used to plug into the GSP's serial console port of the HP PA-RISC rp5410 (Matterhorn?) whenever I needed to visit our data center to rescue one of the hpux servers I used to administer. I think the last update I installed on my little Aspire One was some Fedora release before they ditched i386 32bit support. Due to restructering of my department I no longer have the need nor access to the DC and the HP PA-RISC stuff was decommissioned a while ago and the DBs and Apps that ran on it were migrated to Linux on more commodity-like HW. Your video reminded me of my little lightweight rescue tool and inspired me to revive it. I once came across the BunsenLabs distro which I found quite appealing. Do you think this distro would be suited for this little old netbook? I think I should give it a try.

I have an hp stream laptop, and honestly because the keyboard is excellent, it would make a good free-$30 writing laptop. the battery life is excellent (6 hours from a 2013 laptop) and it's probably so good because people don't want to use it. it's 10 years old and it can't even run windows, it barely ran brand new, but linux mint runs like a dream, minus the web browser being slow for obvious reasons (2gb ram)

You should not install something other than ArchLinux on these old laptops, arch is so fast and you'll have much better performance than other distros trust me! And don't listen to others saying it's hard to install coz `archinstall` is at your finger tips!

Arch is alright but it can't beat a purposely scaled-down Linux distro for such old hardware like AntiX in terms of performance. For the sort of hardware shown in the video, to try to use anything other than AntiX, Puppy, Linux Lite, Slax, etc. is nothing short of masochism.

Hey Michael. I've tried Zorin Lite on three different laptops, and have had issues with all of them. I can't understand why, as it is lightweight yet modern. The interface is beautiful, to be sure, and it has great features. But my three issues were; on a relatively new Acer laptop, the keyboard started to malfunction, and at about the same time, the touchpad stopped working, on my old HP elitebook, the download speeds from the software manager were abysmal, and on my old macbook, the wifi wouldn't connect (which happened in Pop! os anyway, so Zorin might be off the hook there). I made another bootable disc, in case the first one was faulty, and it made no difference. Three laptops, two different discs, multiple installations, an os that has great reviews, and I get issues every time. Maybe you can give me some clues, because I would like to make Zorin work. It's worth noting that all three laptops run Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.1 perfectly fine. The Acer runs Cinnamon, Ubuntu, and Pop! os with no issues, and I can't get Ubuntu to properly install on the HP, but Mint gives it a second life.

@@jrkinabalu99 Mint Cinnamon is the easiest I have found to use, and the most versatile in that it installs on pretty much anything, old or new. For older computers, I hear a lot about Centos. Linux in general is lightweight, so it probably won't which distro you choose, as long as it installs. Bear in mind, my experience is only with Mint Cinnamon, Ubuntu 20.1, Pop!os, Elementary, and lately, Zorin Lite, and I can only speak with confidence for what I've tried. I still believe Linux Mint Cinnamon is the best out of everything I've used. It's been my daily driver, more or less, for three years. I love it, and it runs quite well on my old HP Elitebook 8560p (for some reason Ubuntu failed to install properly on it, but would probably run OK if it installed). I have Zorin Lite on it now, and it seems smooth, too, though I still prefer Cinnamon because the native software centre for Zorin seems buggy, at least for now. I would push yuou to Mint Cinnamon, or Mint Mate, if your computer is too old for Cinnamon to run well.

Oh, that will happen for sure. Even if the distros were still to support it, what good would it be if no applications do? 64 Bit with all of it's advantages only causes the developers to put in more effort to make a 32 Bit version as well (or built it first and add bit address support later)

Ah yes, Zorin OS, I tried that some time ago. While I do think it's a good version of Linux, the problem with Linux is that so much of my software that I use is Windows only. Trying to find Linux equivalents of most of those has been futile and trying to run them though WINE has gone form partially working do just flat out doesn't work. If it wasn't for this ONE hurdle, I would have switched to Linux years ago. If only Windows was more like this in the way of being free from crap like Linux is.

Too bad Zorin OS does NOT have a 32 bit release! If you are looking for something for an older system that is 32 bit such as many of the old netbooks, I would suggest Debian 32 bit MATE release. I have it working on a Dell Inspiron MINI 10 with an Intel Atom Z520 cpu and 1 GB of ram and it runs great.

yea i have an old laptop and win 10 on it but its slow, games run fine (older games) but the operating system is a bit sluggish, and well maybe only the older HDD and probably with switching to a SSD would solve this issue, but why bother if i could go with this. Once i tried POP OS, but i dont know, wasnt a fan but it was some years back so maybe its better now. But first it was weird a bit, but as i got more familiar it well kinda felt like windows with things done differently, but anyway. I heard about Zorin etc. and probably just probably will give this a try with my odler laptop, but im really struggling cause i mostly use it for old games and or older games those that run great on it, but with Zorin i dont know if i will be able to run them. Maybe ill just wing it and whatever. Its not like its hard to install and reinstall an OS, i just really dont like doing it. Yet when win xp era around that time i loved reinstalling everything and it felt satisfying having a fresh install of everything, but as years went by and i got older i got more well lazy i guess, and now i really hate it, but that doesnt mean i dont know how and what to do, jsut that i hate it :). Anyway, good suggestion and well i think illl buy a SSD and clean install on it, that will be the best i guess.

Getting an SSD is the first step to upgrading a "slow" laptop, regardless of the operating system. It is also especially important for low RAM machines, since when it is full, some stuff gets offloaded to the main drive. The faster it is, the more responsive the system

Agreed. I installed ZorinOS on my daughters all-in-one HP. The performance was fine, but the look and feel of the DE just did not compare well with LM running the Cinnamon DE.

@@MichaelNROH Completely agree with the ease of installation. At the time my daughter did not have any experience using a PC, be it Windows or Linux. I had just heard about ZorinOS and figured I'd give it a shot. Install and initial configuration was a breeze. As for resource usage, it was great. But after a while I started to notice that some of the DE customization options found in Cinnamon were missing. It was a bunch of little things that I missed that started to annoy me.

Bionicpup IS thé best , 300mb needed for installation and 300mb of ram IS recommanded, and it's based on Ubuntu 18.04 and it supports 64bit and 32 bit version and cpus with some tweaks it's the best choice for gaming and web and prodectivity , it's thé way to go 8f you have a low end pc

The current 32-Bit variant of ZorinOS will drop support on the 31st of May, and I don't think there will be a successor. 32 Bit systems which actually have a 32 Bit architecture are fading out of existence since with the hardware standard being so high, many applications drop support as well.

Please don't compare Windows and Linux by looking to the Memory usage graphs. Windows will use much more memory when the hardware allows it and will try to shrink itself to the minimums otherwise. But 1 Gb of RAM is really small amount for Windows newer than XP.

My Linux system boots to 210MB RAM (out of 32GB), it use free memory to cache disk. Linux felt much leaner than Windows XP, it was obvious by how much Windows swap on the same task.

My old laptop overheated and when the corner is bumped, it’ll just freeze and graphical artifacts will appear. If it’s bumped again, more artifacts, and it stays frozen. I would love to do this, but the laptop is just unusable now.

If this is a video subsystem problem, you can try using Linux without a GUI. It's also possible that it's a RAM issue (especially if you have a graphics "card" integrated into the processor), in which case you can test and replace it (unless it's soldered to the board, of course). If the processor is defective, the repair will be unprofitable.

I get that "get more life out of your old computers" is an entirely valid usecase for linux, but, the more I see it (especially now) the more I have to ask, is this actually how we should be advertising linux? It's a valid usecase sure, but if someone has an old computer they're already not using, how likely is it that when they do get it to a vaguely usable state (linux may be great, but it can't work miracles, bad hardware is still not going to be a pleasant experience) they're actually going to do anything with it? It just sort of feels like advertising a car by how good it's air conditioning is, it might not be wrong, but is someone really going to sell their old car on the basis of slightly better air conditioning? I feel like the "revitalize your old hardware" thing only applies to techies who already know about linux and have uses for old hardware, but for average users, I'm really not sure if it actually matters to them that much.

​@D Reaper jesus christ always back to fucking E-waste with you people. Frankly, no, computers with sub 2ghz processors just ARE ewaste at this point. Installing linux on them doesn't fix that, they're just old hardware. They can't run anything most people want to run on them, and frankly finding and distributing such systems to people who COULD get use out of them, would almost certainly end up hurting the planet more as you have to ship several pounds of mass across the world for a solution that's worse than a proxmox VM. Notice, people were willing to sell their old machines for cheap to your boss, precisely BECAUSE they had no use for them. Also, as I mentioned in the other reply, you haven't actually said those machines were in need of more performance to begin with. You need to factory wipe machines before reselling them anyway, frankly it seems far more likely linux was just a way to do that quickly and easily without having to deal with potential windows licensing complications. Not to mention linux installs faster and is generally a better experience. Nothing you've said has anything to do with eeking out more performance of the old systems, and frankly based on your noticably indirect phrasing, I'm guessing you have no evidence to suggest that's why it was done either, meaning you know your story is irrelevant. My point is about marketing linux to average users as revitalizing their old systems. Systems which they have no use for to begin with, otherwise they'd still be using them, and systems which - irrelevant of the OS - are too out of date to be comfortably used since software, websites, etc. have all also gotten more computationally intensive. Linux is a couple % faster than windows sure, but realistically a couple of % won't take a system from unusable to usable, it'll just make the unbearable mildly more bearable. Unless we're talking about a system with 2-4gb of ram (which, again, already won't be capable enough for comfortable day to day use on linux or not) the 1-2gb of ram saved by linux is unlikely to significantly change the performance of a system to the point of getting new use out of it as an average user. It's like an ant, sure, on weak machines linux can lift a lot more than it's own bodyweight, but it still isn't lifting much. Linux may reduce the RAM usage by 40% compared to windows, but the OS isn't what's using the most RAM to begin with. It's an improvement sure, but it's not going to be what takes a system so old you stopped using it and make it perform well enough that the average user will start using it again. Ants lifting so much more than their own body weight is impressive sure, but realistically, they still aren't lifting that much. Just the same, linux saving 40% of the memory compared to windows is impressive sure, but it's still only saving a gigabyte or two. These machine still might have some use, but an average user won't have a use for them. (and again, shipping them around to try to find someone who does is almost certainly going to hurt the planet far more)

@@robonator2945 But if you do install Windows 11 (it's not that hard to get around the artificial limits), you'll find that you now do need more performance, as your computer is no longer busy with the work tasks that you need, but constantly searching for updates, collecting telemetry, showing ads and doing Bill Gates knows what else. So you will be forced to install a more powerful processor, memory and SSD, despite the fact that everything worked quite well in Windows 7. Or you can install Linux and use this computer for a few more years.

​@@kote315 yeah that's just flat out wrong. I DID upgrade to windows 11, and the experience isn't significantly different to windows 10. The simple reality is, the spyware has been in windows for ages already, and most of that doesn't actually impact performance. It CAN impact responsiveness slightly, but windows has been highly optimized so that it doesn't pose a performance issue. If it truly were as simple as "install linux and get 20% more performance" then everyone already would have. Linux's peformance benefits are present, but they're nowhere near as clear cut or large enough to matter for most average user usecases. The times when linux DOES notably perform better, it's almost always a result of implementation rather than general optimization. For instance factorio IIRC was able to asyncrhonously save on it's linux version, but couldn't on it's windows version. That meant on the windows version you would get a hitch everytime it saved, and on the linux version you wouldn't. While linux does perform differently in that case, it's not because windows has more spyware that slowed it down, it's because a specific feature was present on one OS and not the other. If we're factoring that as "performance" though then we also have to give Windows credit for all the shit it can do that linux can't, notably HDR. There IS a performance difference, but for the VAST majority of usecases it's a "oh that's kind of nice it's a tad faster" situation; it won't make an unusable computer suddenly super nice to use. And, again, if it's an old computer you don't use anyway, then being slightly less shit than it currently is won't mean you have a use for it. You already made due without it, and it's still bad, it's just less bad than it was. Is your average user going to go out of their way to find a new use for a computer that's still a slow piece of shit, just because it's a slightly less slow piece of shit than it was before? A techie might have a use for shitty computers sure, but a techie already knows about linux; they don't have to be convinced to use it. Will the AVERAGE user get anything out of a slightly less piece of shit computer?
