Keep Your Shoulder Mounts Clean to Last a LIFETIME!

In this video we are joined by Justin Yuran of Yuran's Whitetail Taxidermy in Transfer, PA. Justin demonstrates how to keep your shoulder mounts looking brand new for a lifetime. The importance of good taxidermy to preserve your hunting memories for a very long time is invaluable, however even the best mounts need cleaned up from time to time. Here's how!
Items you'll need:
Microfiber cloth
Windex or window cleaner
Q Tips
It's a simple process but can go a long way for your shoulder mounts!
A few quick tips:
Keep taxidermy away from fireplaces or heating registers
Keep taxidermy hung in climate controlled rooms
keep mounts out of the sun
NEVER brush against the grain of the hair
Clean twice a year

If they're really dusty, you can blow off with compressor if you're careful. Safer to use canned air or blow dryer set on no heat. Don't vacuum it will suck hair off. I like pledge or old gold for antlers. Spray on cloth then rub antlers. Some people use windex too. The furniture polish gives a little sheen and repels dust. I'll use no odor paint thinner on cloth for bird mounts in direction of feathers.

My tax recommended Liquid Gold on the antlers and wiping down the cape lightly too. Then the qtip eyeball treatment showed here

An old taxidermist once told me to wipe the mounts with a slice of bread to get dust off..

We are cleaning for some one cabin with very high mounts. How you you suggest cleaning them without taking them down?

I had a hide done hair on. It’s been in my cabin for 2 yrs. Not a lot of dust, but it has had mice running around on it. They have chewed anything but I found little turds on it which makes me think they did other things on it. It looks pretty much like the day I got it back. Any suggestions for that.

Yup with ammonia in it that eats glue windex could fuck up your mounts if you not very careful

It's fine. Lightly wet the cloth with it and wipe. It's only a problem if you spray it directly on the mount or drench the cloth

I believe he said no chemicals on the hides and use windex on the eyes because they are glass.
