I greatly appreciate your videos!! When I was a teenager back in the 90s I wanted to be a taxidermist, but ended up getting into computer programming. I absolutely love the outdoors and taxidermy, and after 25 years of sitting behind a computer 8-5, my desire to get back into taxidermy has been rekindled. I actually tagged out (for the first time in my life) on two average sized 8-point bucks this season, neither of which I would normally have mounted, however I feel these bucks will be great specimens to learn shoulder mounting with. I've got them caped out and and capes rolled and in the freezer. I am soaking up all of your amazing wisdom, and hope to see if I can do this in the spring.

Hey Daniel, Great video. You do make it sound easy. I just wish I could get out one more time and bag another buck. With my back so bad it be hard for me to walk around like I use to. After watching so many of your videos, I would love to try and mount it myself. Love your channel and all your videos. Take care and be safe.

Great videos. I mounted a deer last year after watching your video's. I used an engine stand to hold the form. Was on wheels and could spin the form upside down

I finished my 3rd deer today. Just guessing I’m about 3k into tools and supplies. I do have a van dyke fleshed which was costly. When I need advise I do watch a great deal of your videos. I’ve learned on my past 3 deer, there is no 2 taxidermist that does anything the same. Thank you!!

Hello Daniel, love all your videos 🙏 thank you for sharing. I was heavily involved in taxidermy when I was younger. Now I’m 66. I got a WT doe last year and she’s in a pickle. I had to remove her head from the mouth because it was too large for the neck removal. Now I’m concerned on how to mount a shoulder mount. I’ve never done this before. She had a beautiful long neck. I thought it would be a beautiful Mount and maybe when I get a buck I can put them close together. How would you go about this if you would share? Thanks Dave
@thecedarridgechronicles4 ай бұрын
I always just make a small incision on the back of the head to fit it over the form similar to mounting a buck, but cut as little as possible

I am doing my first deer this week. I was wondering about power washing the flesh. If you have any tips, could you inlight me. I’m also in college so it’s constantly stop and go. So when I get to the salting step, could I let it sit more than 2 days? After tanning, could I rap it up in a bag for more than a night before I put it on the form?
@thecedarridgechronicles2 ай бұрын
You can power wash to flesh it, you will still need to split the lips and nostrils and thin the face by hand. I wouldn’t leave it out salted more than a day and night, but you can rehydrate in about a half hour and go into the pickle with it where it can stay a long time as long as the ph stays right. Once it’s tanned, you can put it in a bag with the tan still on it and freeze it. When you get ready to mount just thaw, wash, and towel dry and it’s ready

Also sir one more question I’ve only ever used dry preserve but recently bought everything to do the pickling method I know you haven’t used DP but in your opinion does the pickling have less pulling away while drying the only issue I have is with my lip line they want to pull out even tho I cut a tight line have to keep tucking lips for several days or is this just normal with anything you use? Sorry so long
@thecedarridgechronicles7 ай бұрын
Dry preservatives cause an extreme amount of shrinkage compared to tanning. A tanned hide that is not properly thinned will shrink more than a really thin cape, but not near as much and certainly not as quickly, giving the hide paste time to do its job.

Would I be wrong to say that the little bit of money saved, when DIY one mount, isn't worth it when one could just pay a little more to have an experienced professional do it since they are purchasing supplies at lower bulk prices and already know the process to eliminate additional unnecessary expenses? What might one save by DIY , $100-$200?
@thecedarridgechronicles2 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. It costs me $300 a deer and I already have the tools

Do you ever save and reuse your pickles?
@thecedarridgechronicles6 ай бұрын
I do twice. I use a 75 gallon pickle and will do 15 hides at a time for 2 batches. After that I’ll clean my tub and start over.
@Ealum10136 ай бұрын
@@thecedarridgechronicles Since reusing the pickle... Do you neutralize in a separate container?
@thecedarridgechronicles6 ай бұрын
@@Ealum1013 yes I do. I usually neutralize 2 capes at a time, tan, mount, then do 2 more until it’s time for the next 15
