We’ve received a TON of questions about how/if we can carry-on each of our suitcases given (1) the large liquids in our toiletry bag and (2) their seemingly higher than allowed weight. To clarify, we do NOT carry our suitcases on our flights. We check them, which is generally included in the international and domestic flights we book. We use and prefer traveling with a carry-on suitcase because they are way easier to travel with long term across destinations. Whether we’re lugging them on and off trains across Europe or on and off a longtail boat in Thailand, they’re much better than a big checked suitcase. Also, our carry-ons always fit into the trunk of cars when we road trip around countries. So, we pack our carry-ons to maximize space and get around countries easier for 2-3 month trips. Hope this makes sense! Let us know if you have any other questions.

You seem like nice enough people, but why use a title that's so needlessly misleading? Definition: car·ry-on /ˈkerēˌän/ noun a bag or suitcase taken ONTO an aircraft as handheld luggage. adjective: carry-on; adjective: carryon (of a bag or suitcase) SUITABLE for taking on to an aircraft as handheld luggage.

Makes sense. Looking at your clothing list I could probably easily travel with a carry-on and underseat backpack. I pack less clothing items for a monthlong trip to visit family... but I've easy access to laundry etc. Wow: I pack half of what Jordan does and still don't wear some items (but am happy I've never had the panic of last underwear).

I always pack a full ‘pharmacy’ in my carry-on when I travel, internationally especially. While yes, you can find meds wherever you travel, my experience is that they probably won’t be exactly the same as what you’re used to. Plus, I’ve seen/experienced what happens when you don’t feel well on the flight and have nothing with you to help. So I always always have anti-nausea, upset stomach, cold meds, cough drops, Tylenol, anti-diarrheal, and some bandaids with me.

If you're doing carry-on only, just buy liquids like shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, and lotion when you get wherever you're going and ditch it before you fly back. That way you only have to pack essential liquids in your carry-on that you would need during your actual travel days (liquid makeup, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, etc.), all in travel bottles and all fitting in that one quart-sized bag...hopefully. 😊

I was glad to see a headline for "not" rolling clothing. Your video is unique in that regard. Rolling might work for some people, but rolling all clothing items is way too much work for me. I like just talking out my cubes with everything folded flat (except for small items like socks). For me, it's more about weight than space, so I try to use the lightest weight, within reason, clothing items. I also look for the least bulky clothing. A bulky sweater can take up a lot of luggage real estate. For shoes, I found individual shoe bags. This increases the options of where to fit the shoes.

How do you get that toiletry bag through security? That is a ton of liquids! Other than that love the video. On mosquito bites I highly recommend YoungLiving's Rose Ointment, it looks pricy but lasts forever! I use it on bites, scrapes, rashes, chapped lips etc. Stops the itching and for me, who is a little more sensitive to mosquitos, shortens healing time to a few days rather than a week. Plus you can decant into a used lip balm container (the well type, not tubes) and even that amount is more than enough for a trip or everyday carry.

I probably carry the same amount of stuff with me all in a personal item (except cosmetics and hair straightener). Suggest changing your backpack to one with a clamshell design; they fit the same amount of stuff but provide easy access to everything. Packing cubes take up space; they are unnecessary. Vacuum bags will let you fit more stuff although I don't use them because they wrinkle your clothes. In Japan you can also get travel umbrellas that are tiny and lightweight, probably half the size of a normal compact umbrella. Get a cheap laundry bag made of nylon at Dollar Tree, they weigh nothing and take up less space than a pair of boxers. Strap shoes to bag, they take up too much space and make your bag nasty. Your travel adapter is really bad; get a Zendure Passport - it has 5 USB type B/C plugs (with the socket, you can have even more) and can replace the power supply for your computer with the sideport (because it is good for up to 240v which means you can run a HAIRDRYER with it and be fine). It also has a resetting fuse unlike most, so if you blow the fuse, you don't have to buy a new one. Instead of a grocery bag, use a nylon backpack. Sea to Summit (I see you use their handwipes so you know the brand) makes one that is microscopic and folds into itself; it's about the size of a bottle of vitamins but expands to be large enough to carry enough groceries for 2 people. Your liquids and gels are in so many different bags; since you check a bag you can still get through airports fast but if you just use a regulation case for liquids, you can just carry-on and skip check-in. Your toothpaste is also tiny; just get one of those Colgate bottles that are exactly 3.5oz from Dollar Tree. That should last one person about 3+ months. If you do all this stuff you can probably just travel with one checked bag and save yourself a shitton of money. Over the past 4 years of backpacking, I would have spent thousands of dollars in extra bag fees if I hadn't opted for the personal-item-only route. I also recognize that bugspray from Thailand; there is a roll-on version that is way smaller. I carry a lot of extra stuff too, like an electric toothbrush, an extra laptop (2 total), an entire apothecary of antibiotics, locks for lockers, and a DSLR with extra lenses. If you trade your backpack for something larger and ditch the carry-on, any excess can go into a waist pack. Airlines charge anywhere from $30-80 for extra luggage. If you call that a $50 average (low end) then over the course of the 50 countries I visited between 2018 and 2022, I saved $2,500 which is like an entire winter vacation in Thailand.

If you get motion sickness, Amazon sells “ low dose Dramamine” this is actually Meclizine. These tablets come in a container like your or in a another regular bottle. The nice part about these is they are breakable 25 mg tablets that are scored and can easily be broken into fourths. I am horribly sensitive to medication and I can actually take a 1/4 tablet and function without excessive sleepiness and they work better than anything I’ve used. I keep them in my purse and cannot even drive curvy roads or stand downstream of a river and watch the water without feeling ill. These tablets also can be chewed ( not much flavor and not gross) for rapid effect. I have taken stock , these are awesome!

I live in Europe and have just helped my kids pack for a flight with a National carrier (not a low cost), and so have recently checked the details for carry on luggage. Firstly those bags are too big to act as carry-ons for all of the airlines I looked at. The measurements of the Away standard carry-on are fine but these ones are between 2 and 3 cm too big in all dimensions. Secondly, referring to them throughout the video as carry-ons is misleading as they would clearly have to be checked in, due to size and weight. The max weight for a carry-on to go in an overhead bin is 10kg, which is not much at all. Thirdly, the bags would have to be checked anyway, if for no other reason than all of the liquids. They are still really strict throughout Europe on liquids and creams, even my daughter’s mascara had to be put in the 1ltr bag. So the tips were great, but they should have made it clear that they check the cases and just take their backpacks into the cabin.

A couple of thoughts for the toiletries bag, the clear one that’s limited to one liter/quart size and liquids of max 100 ml per container. I f you need more space or more toiletries, have a second bag that you put all the non-liquid items in - toothbrush, floss, medicines (pills, not liquids), razor, etc in. I just started doing this on the last couple of trips and I have more room than I need for those liquid items. I use the Nalgene bottles generally, although there are other bottles that weigh less and are less robust, imo. You can also use clear Stretch film (like Saran Wrap) in little squares to put an additional seal under the lids to eliminate spillage inside your toilet bag. I use these in particular on the travel size items with a flip open lid to avoid leaks. Great tips on the video. I haven’t checked a bag in several years, on multiple trips in all seasons, for 2 weeks or more. Some of the budget carriers actually weigh your carry on bag and can be unbelievably restrictive. All about generating additional revenue.

Really good packing vid! The only thing I would do differently is keep my prescriptions in my carry-on. I made the mistake of putting them in my checked bag, and naturally the bag got lost.

This is a pretty awesome video! I’ve been traveling to about 15 different countries, and I can get away with one five day backpack. Even if I go for a year I can survive on a five day backpack. It’s just years of traveling, you don’t need as much stuff as you think.

How much does your bag weigh? Most airlines have a 17 lbs limit, after which you are charged a hefty fee. You statad the bad was a little over 7 lbs empty. So did all that weight under 10 lbs?

Definitely added some things to my wish list! I recently bought a backpack for upcoming travel. My husband kept suggesting ones saying “it’s exactly what you’re looking for!” And I’d respond with “but it’s ugly.” 😆 Didn’t go with the pac safe one, it was the runner up. Hopefully I made the right choice!

Im wondering what several other commenters have asked, as well. Is your toiletry bag holding what you travel 'on the ground' with vs fly with? It is a bit confusing. Also, I am new to your channel and haven't looked through your past videos, but there's no way you can use those suitcases as carry-on in Europe. What do you do in the cases where there are much tighter restrictions? Thanks, I really enjoyed your video. Im always looking to learn whatever i can. It seems rather silly how bent out of shape people can get over rolling, not rolling, cubes or no cubes, etc. A very big factor is what kind of trip you are going on and everyone finds things that work for them. Let's just let people ask questions, learn from each other without getting worked up. Looking forward to seeing more from you both.👍

OMG I love that you pack your shoes in a protector bag. I do NOT understand how people throw their shoes into their luggage without putting them in a bag to keep everything else clean including the luggage itself. We don’t wear shoes in our house either. When you think about what is on the bottom of your shoes how could you possibly want that touching your luggage or your clean clothes.

My husband thinks i am crazy. I only have 2 hands so two roller bags on one person is not working for me. I put my laptop roller, my carry soft bag, and a few clothes and liquids in my big roller. I have one bag to roll into the airport for check in, schlepping etc. Once I get checked in and my tag, I pull out the laptop roller and bag. off goes the lighter big bag.

I just don't get how you can pack full-size toothpaste or creams in a carry-on (the ones shown in a toiletry bag). Maybe there are different rules for USA control but whenever I travel around Europe, it is considered as liquids, and thus must not be over 100ml and should be packed in a clear sealed pack of no more than 1l volume. So does it mean that if I wanna travel to the USA I can take creams and toothpaste in packs over 100ml and not necessarily pack them into a clear bag and show them during the security check? Thank you

DRAMAMINE TIP: I've never used Dramamine, but I've seen other videos say DO NOT use the ORIGINAL formula. Instead, get their LESS DROWSY formula. It's a different medicine all together that works much better, lasts 24 hours, and doesn't make your drowsy like the original formula. And the original medicine is similar to Benadryl, so it makes you spaced out and tired. Blah
