man I wish I had a good coach! I got burnt out at 15 but made some poor choices and started to smoke and drink and it ruined my reputation at the rink even though I could play ... I became untouchable and undesirable as I was now a bad influence to the other kids .... and I was only following the influence in front of me, my coaches. one was an ex nhler and a junior a that really destroyed bunch of kids hopes and desire to play because of their own failures as professionals.... but when your 14 15 16 ... things ain't so clear. glad theres dudes out there like this I never had fun playing was like a day job. 2000s hockey was rough, my last good coach was my father in atoms 😢

This is amazing. Rarely see coaches give a message like this while coaching, he understands coaching is not only on the ice. Great message, hope these kids register it

I had a really similar situation with my youth hockey experience. Got burnt around my freshman year in hs then came back to an AMAZING coach that actually cut me from the tryouts. He even talked to me personally and said, "youre a good player but we have to bring back players from the previous team". Apparently the kid who took "my" slot was a problem on the team and I got a phone call from the coach saying "How would you like to win the championship this year with our team?". I may have been the water boy on the 3rd line, but we won the championship. Best experience of my life with a great team and the best coach.

As a kid in Ontario minor hockey I didn’t love the game until I was maybe 14 and I started at 3. I always said when I have kids of my own and I get to coach , the number 1 thing I will teach is how to love the game . Everything else falls into place afterwards,
