Seed and Sparrow Homestead

11 ай бұрын

Hey Friend, its September. The Garden is needing some attention. Weeds have taken over; disease has set in, and we are going to spend a little time tending to it and tidying up. Regardless of its shortcomings, it's still producing, and we will be harvesting lots of produce too! Come hang out in the garden with me.
Thanks for watching,
Kelsey

I enjoy your videos so much more BECAUSE you keep it real. We all live real lives contrary to what social media likes you to believe. I would bet that all your followers would agree. Seeing only the tidy, perfectly green and abundantly producing parts of a garden only makes one feel like they’re doing something wrong or their efforts aren’t enough. Your garden in August and September is as beautiful as it is in May, June and July. The beauty comes from different places and for different reasons. Your garden and the love and work you pour into it provides some beautifully, bountiful pantry shelves! Have a wonderful weekend Kelsey.

Just disregard the comments and do what benefits you and your family. God knows you and your heart. People that make the comments about how much your growing are clueless! We are a family of two now, but I grow anywhere from 9 to 13 different tomato plants. 3 or 4 of each that we like. For fresh eating and canning and I always use them all. I give stuff to my grown children and family. But, most stay right here. I love not having to buy tomato products at the grocery store! So, you do whatever feeds your family! 😊

Right? There is such a disconnect about where food comes from and just how much is needed to feed a family! It’s so satisfying to not have to go to the store, even if it’s just one product! Thank you 🤍

I saw on another gardening channel that if you want the Brussel sprouts to grow bigger you need to take the top off the plant so it puts its energy into the sprouts rather than getting taller. Not sure on them getting bitter, but it’s already in the garden so I’d top it and see how you go!

I think you are a wonderful gardener, be proud of all your hard work. Most people don’t have a clue what goes into gardening and preserving! I think it had close 60 tomato plants this year for 3 people. It was first time I didn’t have to buy any to supplement and I was able to make some fun things like pizza sauce and taco sauce. I think I’m going to try ketchup, have you seen the price of ketchup in the stores?? ugh!!! Anyway, always enjoy your videos!

Its very encouraging! & motivating! I always struggle with "taking care of the weeds/garden vs. Harvesting & doing something with the harvest" (This is only my first year starting to can/preserve things. We usually just eat fresh.) I don't like seeing weeds go to seed because I know thats just adding to my soils seed bank, & creating more work for my future self... & sometimes with the heat & having thyroid issues & anemia, its hard for me to just go out & even harvest to even eat/cook fresh. & then I beat myself up about letting all my hard work go to waste. I think about all the hours (& money) I spent starting seeds, watering fertilizing, etc. To just let the harvest go to sh*t 😒 So watching these kind of videos motivate me to get out there! Its been especially hard since i went back to 1st shift because its too hot after work, & by the time it cools off its too dark & theres too many mosquitos. I like in 2nd shift that i had the cool mornings to work in the garden & soend sone quality time with my son- just him & I.

Your garden really wanst bad. Mine however really went nutz with weeds this year. We had a night of 45 and more to come this week so my garden is almost totally done. Also had alot of powdery mildew which made us take out the squash early but they will cure fine. It is so nice when things start to grow and you get that first tomato but it quickly gets out of hand for most of us. Then comes the beginning of the end which for me is just as pleasant as the beginning. Thank you for sharing it ALL and thanks for the beautiful mountain view as well. Blessings!

Great tromboncino harvest! I love, love them when they are not yet hard. So much flesh to eat and they are very much like yellow squash. When left to harden the skin, I've never let them stay that long so can't wait to hear how they taste. They are one of my favorite squash to grow besides the cushaw and candy roasters. You have had an amazing garden and should be so proud of all that work. And of all the preserving you do! You have a great channel to watch!

So true about tomatoes cooking down to practically nothing. I did the Ball Roasted Marinara recipe last week, which starts with 20lbs of roma tomatoes. But once it was all cooked down (which took forever) I ended up with only 3.5 quarts of sauce.

I truly haven’t over planted anything but perhaps peppers. This is how we eat over the winter, I don’t buy much from the store. If I gave it away that’s just taking good food away from my family. I grow to feed them organic, nutritious food, otherwise they may not get it because prices are outrageous. I preserve everything that comes out of the garden, and know my limits and set boundaries. If there is anything we truly can’t use or I can’t get to it gets given away to family or friends who can benefit from it. 🤍🤍🤍

Even in the wilds of august and September, your garden is magnificent. I’m somewhat new to your videos and have been searching to try to find a video that talks about how much acreage or square footage you are growing on? This was the first year I put serious effort into trying to grow enough of a few things to last my family for a year. I did really well but did have to purchase some from a local farmer. I plan to add more raised beds and expand into new thing in addition to my basic tomatoes, peppers, green beans and herbs, next year.

Looking forward to updates on the long-necked squash as that is on my list for future to-grows; I like to try something new each year. New plants that I've tried this year and love the taste of are Green Apple cucumbers and Black Krim tomatoes (I know, most have tried the BlackKrim but not me). Side note: A beekeeper friend of mine told me not to wear black around bees as they sometimes become aggressive with black as it is associated with bears with them. Oh, 9 gallons of raspberries is a wonderful problem to have!

I’ll be sure to keep you posted! Oh my, that’s interesting about the black, I’ll keep that in mind! Thank you ☺️ 🤍🤍🤍

I agree with you about the cucamelons. I did not enjoy them either. I might give them one more try next year, though, because someone said they are good fermented and so now I'm curious and want to try that.@@seedandsparrowhomestead

We tried pickling them and to us they were no better than regular cucumbers 🤷‍♀️ didn’t try fermenting them though! Fun to look at and grow but a pain to harvest and just not worth taking space up for us!

What are your plans with the mini pumpkins? Will you let them cure and save as is, or do you have canning or decorating plans? I’m in northern New England and struggle with succession planting potatoes, I tend to get one harvest from my patch, no matter how early the variety I pick

Hi! The mini pumpkins are just for decor, I don’t believe they would be something good to eat. My 6 year old daughter chose to grow them ☺️. I’m not sure how the climate is where you are but here I plant potatoes in March and mulch until threat of frost is gone, dig in late June and plant a second round immediately for harvest early October 🤍
