I'm an atheist, and I don't mind how you mentioned your faith as part of your process. You kept it in context of your process, you weren't preaching, you were just being honest and I can respect that. You shouldn't feel the need to apologize for it. I'm a freelance comic book colorist, and when I'm feeling burnt out while working on a project I like going for a walk, self-reflect, and just think. You pray. Those two things aren't that different.

Sorry, I should have just not said anything. :*( It is a great video though and I think you nailed the questions right on the head for a lot of artists, it can be so difficult to keep a sustained enjoyment of your work. : D

Here's to a bunch more comments and I'll likely watch this at least 10 times. So it's going to get to beyond 200 since it's already at 198! Woohoo!

This was, by far, my favorite Talk-Ink video so far. As I finish up my first comic (just a little bit of coloring and lettering to go) I think that this information will be extremely useful for me. I appreciate all the insight you provide, and that you are willing to share you experiences to help others grow. Thanks again Jason.

Hey Mr. Brubaker, thanks for re-uploading this, I did end up managing to hear it. I found your thoughts to be very insightful and I mostly agree. I worked in advertising as a graphic designer for a while and that was something where I struggled with creative freedom and finding reasons to take pride in projects; for me, I had to just kind of take pride in the craftsmanship of it since I couldn't have cared less about what sale X store was running or who had the best customer service ratings. : D

Agreed. There are a lot of people who feel afraid/ashamed to admit they're religious publicly, and it shouldn't be that way. Glad to find an artist who I can learn from who's also not ashamed of their faith :)

Ah, man . . . Listening to everything you said in this video really hit home. Not sure if you read my suggestions, but after hearing this video -- I want to change some of the things I said, hah! God bless ya sir. As others have said, thanks for your transparency and wisdom.

You know your ideals are a lot similar to my own. I appreciate you sharing them, because I've gotten a lot of flak from my peers for standing up for my beliefs both professionally or recreationally! It's legit listening to this stuff!

Hey man, thanks so much for sharing this! I've been hacking away at a comic book for about 3 years now off and on and this has really helped me with perspective and focus. You rock, God rocks. Thanks!

Thank you Jason for sharing your heart with us artists. This is an important video for me because so many of the times I can get, I guess you can say sidetracked for a period of time by life and other things, or you get bored by doing the same thing, and I find so many of my paintings are unfinished to this day. Some are drawn out in pencil on canvas, or 40% painted. I have many picture frames empty. Paints and brushes unused. Canvases blank. One time the KZbin I was following was removed and I couldn't finish the ocean beach scene, and then a year later it was back up. But what impressed me most about you was your bold witness of your faith. In this industry as you know the "almighty dollar" is the "god" that keeps this movie machine churning out more (as you are trying to say) "meaningless" stories and artwork. I felt that way too as I have worked in the past in a print shop and an advertising agency and so to do somebody's business card and letterhead or a Mr. Sub Vision Statement placard just wasn't the fuel to be put in my artistic Jet Pack. I wanted to do my "desires." I mean I did get a few interesting cool projects to work on, but it wasn't something that burned inside of me to do. I've been listening to you from KZbins and archived How To Draw Comics Podcasts while I deliver the mail. You would have never guessed that that which you recorded would be heard walking down the streets of Fort Erie on some mailman's I-Phone did you!? LOL!
@CoffeeTableComics5 жыл бұрын
Wow man! That's so cool to hear. Thanks for sharing that with me and the encouragement. :) It really does help me in the times that I have trouble to keep going to know that others are being inspired and helped by what I'm trying to do. :)

@@CoffeeTableComics I sent you an email as well with the same KZbin post as above but with a little "PRIVATE" info as well I think you'd like. I appreciate your very quick response considering this an old KZbin as well hahaha!

Hey Jason, thanks for making these videos. I just discovered you and your work last week. Love it! Im looking to buy reMIND and Sithra soon. I hope to one day do what you do. Working full time on my own art and stories would be awesome! By the way, Your videos have taught me a ton!

The perspective makes that pen look HUGE. Love your inking. I'm working on loosening up my inking so it looks more organic. I used to be praised for my uber clean line work, but I think it makes my characters look less lifelike and I love that variation that brush pens bring.

Great hearing you doing pitch after pitch, and how it made you a better artist. I was part of a bunch of pitches myself (After getting work as an inker with Marvel & DC) but they didn't take. ...thinking of teaming up with other creatives now and hitting up Image, Dark Horse or the like.

Just what I needed, right now I'm inking some pencils that were on stand by to pitch our idea to Image, and, well I have been pretty down lately about, well, life haha... Luckily I have had some awesome job experiences but in the comic area is a real strugle and when you mentioned God that hit me really hard, been getting away from him lately... Anyway, I would love you to see some of my work if you could and thanks for the video Cheers from Venezuela, keep it going!

What did you do on your year off after ReMind? I'll be finishing a 5+ year project soon and was thinking about take a year off from creating and doing cons to focus almost exclusively on studying and practicing. Do you find it better to refocus your creativity or sort of "turn it off" and recharge completely?

Great video I think all artist find themselves in a rut from time to time. Money is not always the great motivator people seem to get excited about. I think the day money becomes number one is the day you quit being a artist.

Jason, Grats on the great kickstarter success!! I have a somewhat unrelated question. What music do you listen to while your working? I shazamed Josh Garrels on one of your twitch streams, but what else do you listen to?
@issacteaches56398 жыл бұрын
Hey, just a thought! I used to seek out music and listen to it while I painted. Now I actually play videos of my favorite artists and inspirational people. Lately, they tend to be people like our very own Jason Brubaker. I highly recommend giving it a try. A big artist dilemma (or at least one of mine) is not having a lot of friends that want to actual sit and do art with you. Not many people in my life are as dedicated as I am at this point. Listening to videos like this while working on my own projects fills that void a lot. Sometimes my mind drifts away from what he's saying and I get more focused on my work . . . that's okay. I'll just replay the video again. You'll only be helping him out by giving him more views and letting the advertisements play while you're "in the zone". Not sure if you're religious, but I tend to let God let Jason's or other artists voices to shine through and I'll hear what I was meant to.

+ArtofIssac cool man. I do that from time to time. I try and change it up now and then though. lately I've been listening to a lot of movie and game soundtracks. Also, I am a Christian Artist too, and I do a podcast. We had the oportunity to interview Jason just before he did the Sithrah kickstarter. we talk about how a Christian worldview affects art, work, and creating. if you want to check it out you can search for reformed canvas on iTunes or go to www.reformedcanvas.com.
