@@SharingTheOutdoors oh wow that's a smart tip! One of our pet peeves, you buy a dozen and someone beat you to it and grabbed a bunch and put in their container, now we open and check, and decided better to do it ourselves. This may sound silly, but what about earthworms? We compost in our garden and have a bunch and sprinkle them all over to help aerorate (that's why we think we can do it) Have you had much luck fishing with those? THANKS 😊

@mortsims8 ай бұрын
i have done these things for years. the ground up paper bedding works good. i don't buy the worms. when it rains i go out and pick them up in the yard usually 50 or 60 at a time. night crawlers are now about 4 dollars a dozen in the store. so it saves about 20 dollars each time i pick them up.
@SharingTheOutdoors8 ай бұрын
We've used various paper beddings as well. They are adequate for the short term, but we've found that over the long term they tend to get a bit slimy, and the worm food tends to mold faster. It's also much easier to dispose of the used sphagnum bedding. We use it as as mulch in the garden when were done with it. I wish we had night crawlers here. I know the bulk worms have gotten more expensive since we made this video too. We just don't have them in the soil here.

The 3rd day same thing even though I changed the soil , washed the jar and set them in the cut bait box which contains ice. Now I catch 2 dozen instead of 3 dozen and if I run out I vibrate some more with the stick from the forest near where I fish. Peat as bedding and leaves and a sprinkle of cornmeal as food is all that needs to be done also once you see bedding is now poop replace it and hold onto it maybe use it for your garden because they will start eating their own poop and their poop is actually toxic to them and that's what kills them also their slime gets acidic after sitting in the bedding for the awhile
@SharingTheOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the sphagnum bedding as opposed to peat or paper beddings. It is much cleaner, doesn't stain your hands or leave wads of used wet paper to deal with, and after use it returns to its, dry flaked state and leaves no mess. It also makes great garden fertilizer like you mentioned!

I thought your video was interesting. I have had composting worms for a while in 5gal buckets & about 1/2 year ago got some night crawlers to see about breeding them. I know it's not the same as what you're doing, but what would be your thoughts on that? You dont have to keep them refrigerated & can feed them dried leaves/grass. My worms are still alive and have been breeding. It does take a while to get them full grown. I'm just curious on your thoughts because the reason i got the nightcrawlers is because my dad fish's & he does what you do, where he buys them & doesn't breed more.
@SharingTheOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Wish I could help, but I have no experience breeding, nor have I noted reproduction even after keeping them for over a year at a time. I do wonder though, perhaps your nightcrawlers are European, not Canadian? I know the European don't require refrigeration.

@@SharingTheOutdoors Mine are Canadian. It's probably because I feed them. I'd guess refrigerating them makes them slow down and live long like what they'd need to do in winter. Instead of buying more worms why not breed some of the ones you have?
@SharingTheOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, and for the industrious it can be done. But for night crawlers it requires specific soil chemistry, as well as about 6 months to mature. We use them much too quickly to wait. Much easier to just buy another batch. Raising red worms is a much easier and quicker process if you're interested in cultivating them.
@shannontogo65383 жыл бұрын
@@SharingTheOutdoors I guess it depends on how quickly you use them and the cost/effort to buy vs breeding. I just ordered 100 night crawlers and I am going to see if I can breed them. I paid $48 AUD for 100 worms so they aren't cheap,and hopefully they will breed. Have you come across many cocoons from the worms you have bought?
@SharingTheOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@shannontogo6538 As doing as I've been doing this, I've only ever noticed what I thought were one or two baby worms, and that was after I held the leftovers over the winter. Never seen cocoons. Of course, I don't worry about soil PH so I'm not surprised. That's A LOT of money for 100 worms though. It works out to about 8 AUD a dozen. You can order them from Wal-Mart much cheaper than that. We buy them from speedy worm, and they quote a batch of 100 for about 36 AUD. But buying in bulk knocks the price down a lot. If you buy 500 worms at a time it's about half price, at 75 AUD. That's why we do this, to save money on bait.
