A note on "flock" for turtledoves, while they will settle closeish together sometimes they aren't really truly flocking birds in general! They tend to live in pairs in the wild. Another fun fact about these birds is that the origin of the birds we keep as pets isn't totally clear! They are truly domesticated as far as I've read, and I usually prefer to refer to them as Barbary doves to distinguish from the wild ring neck species. My information may or may not still be up to date though! I'll need to check again. A thing to note about keeping them with other bird species is that they can tend to bully smaller or more mellow species (particularly cockatiels) in some cases, but they rarely seem to injure others in my limited experience? That's really all of the information I have on the top of my head that isn't too redundant, they are such wonderful birds and I love how content yours look! Very pleased to be around you, "chubby" cheeked, relaxed feathers, no tension, it's clear they trust you very much!

Side note, I don't want to be rude, and it might be on the paranoid side, but I wouldn't burn candles/incense or spray aerosols in the room with them just in case, the lung system of birds is really sensitive and there's not a lot of information out there on which essential oils and such are safe for them to inhale! I used to clean down my cages with vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice for enzymatic action of some sort (the juice and soda paste was very good at cleaning is all I know for sure!)

Agreed! I think I've read somewhere that keeping more than a pair can be a bad idea because of how aggressive they can actually get if other doves get too close to their nest/eggs/babies, but I can't remember if that was for ringneck or pet pigeons..
@TheLaughingDove
@TheLaughingDove 6 жыл бұрын
Space big pigeons vary, but they do well in a big flock! It's the turtledoves that are more hermitty by nature. The rock doves are much more rough and tumble generally, especially the males (my boy Condor would wrestle and fight my fingers when I invited him for that play ... Very cute and he'd just meander off when he was done!) I haven't kept rock doves with other species, most keepers I know have them either as indoor pets or in single-species coops, but that might be more out of simple tradition...people tend to seek more "exotic" species for aviaries. The other thing is that male rock doves can be very set on courting anything that moves on occasion, while most are reasonably monogamous from what I've read I wouldn't put it past a big male to try 'drive' a smaller bird to a nest and upset or bruise it perhaps?

PLEASE let everyone know: DO NOT EVER get doves with the intention to “release” them for a wedding or any other special event. Like she said, they will not survive I’m the wild! ALSO, DO NOT EVER-EVER-EVER THROW DOVES into the air, assuming that they will just take off in flight. Most times, they won’t fly. I’ve seen poor doves get thrown into the air, not open their wings, and end up falling to their death on the ground. Please SHARE the word about these important reminders. 🕊😁🕊

One thing you forgot to mention is grits! Grits is very important part of a doves diet, doves have a different digestive system then hook bills and grits help them to processes or "ground" the seeds in their stomach. This is why pigeons and doves peck and eat small rocks in the wild! Grits also give them certain vitamins and minerals they need to keep them happy and healthy :) it also keeps their poos nice and healthy. Some doves will eat grit straight out of a bowl but some doves like it mixed with their food! Thank you for the information!

My dove plays. I'm sure he can't be the only one. He loves lightweight cat toys. He flings them all over the place. He also loves to play with my hand hiding under a sheet, just like a cat! Oh, and he loves flinging my underwear around inside my drawer while I'm getting dressed, same with any light weight fabric I'm sewing with. He's recently claimed a large fallen Christmas bell as his own. He's very curious and definitely plays. If I introduce something new to play with, I peck at it with my finger and fling it around so he knows it's safe.

Phew, I kept doves (Java) in an aviary with finches, a canary and two quail but started before the internet so I was kind of worried in case I'd messed up. We started with two and had 14 in total, sadly we lost three when they were still youngsters 😞 We'd had them for about 15 years when I went out to feed them one morning and they were all gone. All 11. Doors shut and bolted. A few feathers thrown but no sign of animal intrusion. I think they were stolen. A few weeks later the local panto announced they had doves of peace live on stage for the first time. No way of proving if they were mine of or not as I hadn't seen the need to ring them and always thought it looked unpleasant. So I'd add a tip by saying if you do decide to raise babies, even if you don't plan on selling - get them ringed. Thank you for reminding me how amazing doves are bringing back lots of wonderful memories 💖

I'm a long time dove mom. My experience has been VERY different. Simon, my first, lived to be almost 17. I need doves for many years. I loved how different their personalities were. Currently we have 2. Marshmallow and LadyBird. Simon LOVED toys! He LOVED music and had his favorite singers (Michael Jackson, Elton John, Ray Lamontagne) and he also had singers he couldn't stand (Gary Allan, Led Zeppelin) . He had a big hanging rope toy with knots and beads that he picked at and rattled. He had a big bell that he would hop up and hit with his wing for attention. Simon even had his own radio. Marshmallow has toys and enjoys them. He has simple cheap bird toys and loves them so much I made him some more hanging toys. They also LOVE to look into mirrors. His home made toys are mainly natural hemp cord with jingle bells, shiny beads, silver blanks and other small shiny pretties tied on with macrame knots. My tweet tweets (past and present) LOVE having a nice warm bird bath offered to them. After all these years of excellent, happy birds, I have NEVER been able to find a TREAT they love. I know their seed only diet HAS to get boring. Has anyone come across a packaged or home made "tweet tweet treat" their doves love?

A wild dove keeps getting stuck in my chicken’s run. I always see her stuck in the mornings and I always figure she’ll probably go out the way she came in, so I don’t bother her, but every night when I go to put my chickens away she’ll be stuck still but now desperately trying to escape. Unlike the other wildlife that sometimes get trapped you can’t herd her out the open door, she just doesn’t get it. I’ve had to pick her up each time and set her outside, and she’s strangely calm during this process... makes me think she’s a loose pet dove. No way to know for sure though so I leave her be as much as I can.

I had a canary who lived to be 10 1/2 years old and she was absolutely bonded to me. She had quite the personality; she was very sweet but also quite feisty. Hated being handled, which I respected, but any time she was at the vet she would fly back to me for safety. Once she got older she chose to start perching on my hand to take naps and you bet my heart melted when she did that. Birds are wonderful if you choose the right match for your personality and lifestyle.

For a cheap cage for doves look at dog crates. You can get a big one for $20-25 on special on Amazon, which we did for my son's dove. We also used natural clean tree branches of different size so 0 cost for perch (make sure the tree is not toxic). Our dove Choucroute loves to play with budgie toys. everything with moving parts, bells etc he'll play with. Cat's balls with bell inside is a great toy for throwing around when the bird comes out on the floor to explore. Like you we feed a mixed diet made with a base dove feed plus fortified pellets and wild bird mix. They love grapes of millet too. Grit with oyster shell. My son thinks doves make better pets then budgies! And they get used to being picked up and step up so quickly. I love your window perch I need to get one of those!

It is fun to look at and fun to play in (for 15 minute increments). But come time to drive or shovel it, you learn to dislike it.. so come upstate, park yourself in a coffee shop, and enjoy the sight.

This made me tear up a little bit seeing as how I had raised an orphaned dove after a hurricane hit and she had flown away hours ago after a mishap on my part. I'm happy she's in her natural habitat but kinda sad seeing as it was enjoyable to raise a dove from a little "vulture" to a "dive bombing hawk" as my dad called her.

Great video!👏 I'd like to add that while keeping females that are of age to lay eggs it is extremely important to make sure that the bird is at a correct body weight and is being fed a proper an well balanced diet. A laying female will use alot of her reserves, calcium, energy, ect in order to form an lay her eggs so make sure your compensateing for the lost calcium an vitamins. Also I'm not sure if doves are similar to parrots in the sense that they can get fatty liver disease quit easily, but it's worth looking into. **It's also good to do a check in the room before letting your birds out to explore. Most people don't think about these kinds of things but the smallest mistake can kill your bird.. Make sure anyone in the house is aware that they're coming out, keep all pets that could harm them separate, ceiling fans are not friends with flighted birds so make sure they are off, like Em said put some stickers up so they don't fly into any windows, basically common sense stuff that could save your birds life. Wow that was long lol 🕊️

Hi Em ! Being the owner of a male ringneck dove since 2016, I know now they really prefer larges cages (like the ones for bunnies) so they can walk, not high cages to fly in (it's not fitting for them). I don't see this in others comments but it may have already been told to you :) Mine has a cage with all his food and water, but is also free in the house. I saved him two years ago from a bad breeder in Paris, France, and he thanks me every day with a lot of love ! xxx EDIT : Also in this video your birds don't seems to be adults already. I was told mine was a female, and at puberty it turned out to be a male... Are your birds really a male and a female now ? (They turn adults around 6 months)

Great video! I work in a nursing home with a small aviary and we used to have a pair of doves just like these. However they were a very ... Active pair and filled up the aviary pretty quickly with babies so we didn't get to keep them long I miss them they were very social and would come to us when it was time for maintenance and we could bring them out for the residents to interact with. I wish we could bring in another pair

My ringneck doves like playing with cat toys, like the balls(with the bells taken out) and they also LOVE their platforms! I use the same kind that you showed. Mine love hopping from platform to platform. My female dove loves to push the ladder around that's in their cage. She doesn't use the ladder, she just pushes it around. I don't feed mine vegetables though, as I've read from a ringneck dove breeder that doves actually can't digest vegetation, because they do not have the organ that is needed in order to digest vegetables(Can't think of what it's called, it's on the tip of my tongue. Starts with a c?) so it just goes right out without them taking any nutrition from the veggies, and can also upset their stomachs. It seems like there are different opinions though on sprouts because some say that they can't digest it, and others can but only if you feed them whole the tails(new growth) are very small
@Lilmoviegirl
@Lilmoviegirl 6 жыл бұрын
Also, it's fun to think of fun foraging toys for them! A lot of parrot foraging toys are too complex for them to figure out, but mine seem to like it when I sprinkle some seed into plastic fake grass mats and have them forage and pick all of the seeds out of it(Just make sure they don't swallow any of the fake grass, of course)

Would you say they're good beginner birds? Parrots and cockatoos (or anything else with a hooked beak honestly) make me really nervous up close due to some past experiences I've had, so I've never had a pet bird. I didn't actually realize average people could own doves until you got Presto and Voodoo, so I've been waiting on a video dedicated just to them.

I think doves would make a great first bird, and so would cockatiels. I personally don't keep small birds like parakeets, budgies, and finches because I have a fear of them escaping and ending up stuck in a small place that I can't reach in to pull them out of.
