Excellent dissertation on aerodynamics in laymen terms!!! I've got a suggestion for you. I see your little table up against the trailer. What I did was mnt a table with a piano hinge vertically right behind where your window is. Pivots up when traveling, down when in use. Slipped extra tubing into legs to adjust for hgt when in use. No extra storage needed, no lifting-carrying around, doesn't blow over in a wind. Still working on my trailer, like to send pictures when I'm done.

The only high pressure inside our cargo is caused by Kathy . See , she does stuff like putting Cool Whip on pizza , ketchup on Cheerios , and peanut butter on french fries ! So a very high amount of pressure builds . I've even had to go to bullet proof glass in the windows . And good Lord , don't light a match . But I'll keep her because when the bulkhead blows , it does keep the bears away ! Take care you two . Your good friend Vinny in good old Fla

If you do it right it will work very nicely. You may still get some dust if you go too slow (and sometimes you just have to go slow), but if you keep your speed at 20mph or more you'll be fine.

I have an enclosed car trailer, square nose. Along the inside compartment, on the front & outside bottom, where the floor meets the walls, there is a 1-1/2" opening. I know road dirt comes in from there. One time I went to a car show and the next day I had a family of mice that moved it. When i returned home, I put wire mesh, covering the openings. I also had to put wire mesh on the brake drum openings, because they made a home inside the brake drums. They also ate the wires for the electric brakes.

Hi Rick, I just love all the info you provide on your channel. I am so happy to see Linda up and about again too! I use your videos sort of like an encyclopedia. I watched this video long ago and today I was out repacking my truck bed camper conversion. I was making up the bed and the memory of the sneezy road dust on my bedding filtered into my brain from past trips. I came inside to watch this video again and started thinking (oh, oh, thinking again); I wonder if I can put some kind of vent on my topper like you did on your trailer. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, but my thinking gets me into trouble sometimes. LOL Now before I jump into cutting a hole in my topper I wanted to find some info about this “idea”. I am not finding anything specifically about this issue with truck toppers online. I thought I would pose the question… “Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on this?” Thanks Rick, Barb from Wonderland (Shelby) 😊

Another excellent video. I've got 4 of those truck style vents and yes they will allow water to blow in if it's raining and they're facing forward. If it's really raining I don't have them facing forward. I turn them backwards or close them completely because dust won't be a problem if it's raining. They're definitely not without their compromises. I actually installed them because I didn't want to cut another hole in the roof for more ventilation. If I have the trailer parked and don't want to leave the windows open unattended I pop all four of these vents along with two other vents I have in the floor and the one roof vent I have. It allows some cross ventilation and the trailer doesn't turn into an oven. I go to the Bonneville Salt Flats every August for speed week and it's like being inside a light bulb there. I was thinking if parking near a road where dust from traffic was unavoidable I could always cut an oval of furnace filter to fit the vents inside. I haven't tried it though. Those truck style vents also allow me another way to keep an eye on my surroundings from inside the trailer because you can see out of them. I think for dust alone the plastic vents are probably the best option and they're simple and cheap. Your scoop is a pretty cool solution for a V-nose application. Thanks for sharing all your info! I'm looking forward to your next one. Stay safe!

I have a Max fan and every time I leave it open and turned on, it trips out and the only way to reset it is to cycle power. I installed a micro switch in the power line on the nc terminal and all I have to do is activate the switch and it cycles power. I think because of the way it is installed (hindge at the front) it helps create the vacuum if it's open.

After watching the first one on dust I thought of the air filtering system for the breather of my motorcycle 1983 racing could find the filter any longer, so I made my own and improved the running of the motor, there is different types of filter system materials that are not hard to make the dust stay out of the air collection system that could stop the dust from going into your trailer using the system you already have just add to it inside or out side without stopping the rain draining system and can be cleaned as well if they get clod up on ex-streamly dusty roads..

And now I’m wondering if I can get a switch that reverses the polarity of the switch to get the fans to blow the other way. Fans blowing IN is so counter intuitive in a lot of ways to keep dust OUT, but I get it. I can just picture trying to explain this to my significant. She’s by no means stupid, far from it, but damn it sure seems like an uphill climb from here.

Rick! It is I again, one of your favorite PIE and Trailer enthusiasts. Years ago I had seen an expensive Australian jeep trailer rig that used a type of pressurizing fan in order to mitigate dust intrusion. Some of their outback trails are pure talc! it seems... I couldn't find today what brand of trailer that was but am developing a similar setup in my 5 X 10. I've been chasing trailer body panels gaps and weatherstrip voids, etc using a flexible sealant, but I'm sure I haven't gotten everything. I was thinking of using a snorkel of sorts like what some of the offroaders use to minimize dust clogging their engine air filters... I sure like your idea; it's an elegant solution. So, you're saying if your heater flue is left open then that negates the effect of the pressurized inlet? That makes sense since the bores are similar diameter... although one must consider the length of any restriction, too. blah blah blah. Man! You're on top of just about everything! and this channel has become one of my favorites. Just got my Gonagain sticker in the mail! Thanks for the nice note, Linda. Safe travels as always. - C
@gonagain
@gonagain 11 ай бұрын
I'd like to see what you come up with on your own rig. My solution requires me to keep the speed up over about 15mph, but a high volume fan would be better. As for the flue, yes, it needs to be closed for sure.

I have an 8'x24' WellsCargo cargo trailer I've been thinking about converting. I recently received my solar panels and am working on coming up with a good way to mount them on top of my trailer. I have too many panels to fit all on top of the trailer, so I'm working on a plan to use some to form like a carport cover or porch cover over the side door. My biggest problem now is I can't use my arms normally anymore as I'm partially disabled now. That and being disabled now, I'm extremely limited on my disability pay income. I challenge anyone to try to survive on this small pittance.
@gonagain
@gonagain 4 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear about your disability and I'm sure it really slows you down. My suggestion is that you use this type of inexpensive clip to mount your panels in place: www.amazon.com/dp/B00BR3KFKE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_c3EeFbG92SC5A With that many panels you shouldn't have to worry about tilting them.

I'm having a cargo trailer custom built for me next month. It will be a V-nose 6 x 10. Just to make sure I "have all my ducks in a row" I should ask the manufacturer to place the vents high on the front corner of the trailer, about 6"-10" from where the V joins the flat part on the left side of the unit, and then another vent at the back corner on the right side? Thanks for taking time to answer my question. I have just one shot at getting this right.
@gonagain
@gonagain Жыл бұрын
the vents in that location will pull in all the dust if you go down a dirt road. Is this going to be a camper for you or are you just hauling motorcycles? If this is a camper, then do not put the vent on the rear at all. The front vent should either be like mine, as close to the front as possible and with a scoop added to force air into the trailer, OR, put it on the vee nose itself like we did on my daughter's trailer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKa0ip2ZoNh6mLs

Twenty years of boondocking. Dust has been the bane of my existence. I laughed at my inexperience when I first started. I do a lot of off season camping because of hunting. The difference in pressure isn't that much, maybe a few pounds, but it keeps the trailer from having low pressure inside and sucking in the surrounding dust as you drive. The only time we have a dust problem is if the wind is behind us blowing the dust along with us.

How much weight does the air drag add to a tow vehicle? Say, at a constant highway speed limit? Why do race cars have spoilers for down force but nothing to stop the extra air pulled to steal MPG and HP? Looking at your tow vehicle and all the dirt "disturbed" when closing the hatch I remember how rear air spoilers forced down air to keep rear windows cleaner. Why isn't that used today to improve MPG? Big rigs try to control the air space between tractor and trailer but not Campers. Is control of air flow only worth the effort to control dirt? Thanks for the videos. Great!! Edited: You said at one time you had thoughts about cammo. Did you ever make that video?

It looks like I'm going to have to get serious about that camo video! I'm not sure what ever happened to those rear spoilers to keep the back window clean, but they sure would work. I can tell you that the windage takes more from your mpg than the weight does. I say this because my mpg is almost the same when I'm hauling my ATV as when it's empty! The wider and taller the trailer the worse the gas mileage is.

Hi, great video to explain a frustrating problem! But, we have a question - on our V nose cargo trailer, the top vent is farther away from the edge than yours. It measures about 7" back from the edge. Do we have to extend the sheet metal across that area to meet the front edge? Thank you for your help!

Did you have a 2nd scoop vent on your v-nose located on the opposite side and close to the bottom of the trailer? My Alcom v-nose 6x12 does and I wondered if you think that having that 2nd vent would be sufficient for the balanced interior pressure (kinda like those kettle charcoal grills move air)

Our trailer did have that 2nd vent down low near the bottom and we sealed it up. To keep out dust, you want the inside to be to be pressurized so outside dust doesn't come in.

I haven't really started my build yet, but I do have a trailer similar to yours that is 6x12. Amazon doesn't have the vents on your link anymore, so I found some others that are similar. Would you suggest I mount the vent in the same location as yours, or would another spot be better? Thanks. P.S., are you happy with the location of your stove being in the front of the V? If you had to start over again would you still locate it in the same spot?
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions! As for the stove, if it's propane like mine you don't have to vent it through the roof, but can go up and then out the side. Mine is like that because it replaced a wood burner. That means you can put the stove anywhere. Having said that, I find it works best for us where it is. That vent needs to be high and towards the front in order to stay out of the dust from your own tires. On my daughters new 6x10 we actually mounted it high on the face of the vee and off to the side, but the jury is still out on that location because she hasn't driven it through rain yet. Will it be too much wind? Force rain in? I don't know yet, but I've seen others mounted in that way. If you mount it where mine is, you'll need something to scoop the air into it like I had to do. One thing is for sure and that is it keeps the dust out!

I'm sorry, I went through the comments and didn't find the answer. When you install this, which way are you orienting the vent? So that it faces the front of the trailer so it catches air as you drive? That seems the best way to maximize pressure, but it doesn't look like how your set up is oriented. TIA!

I haven't had a flat nose cargo trailer but I've been told that there isn't much difference in fuel economy between the two. I can tell you this though; It doesn't matter if my trailer is heavy or light, the mpg is about the same, so it seems the wind resistance has more bearing in economy than weight.

On my trailer, with the add on scoop, I don't get water into the trailer because the vent has a bypass built in that directs the water straight through. BUT! Snow, being lightweight, does pass through so I stuff a rag in the outside part of the vent if I happen to be driving through a snowstorm.

Now this entire venting and pressure thing is in regards to the dust that your own rig is creating , right ?! What does it do when you are following other vehicles that are churning up the dust and smoke from the road ahead of you as well , and it is all bellowing directly at your rig ? Doesn't your air scoop direct all his dust and smoke to the inside of your rig , regardless ?! So this helps protect you from yourself but nothing else , right ? Which that is helpful though.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
I never stay in anyone's dust that might be driving ahead of me because that really clogs up my engine's air cleaner fast. I always just drop back and let them go on ahead. What this system does is to keep the dust that billows up behind your trailer from being sucked in, which happens if you don't increase the air pressure inside your trailer with the scoop. This works.

Seems like you are creating a parachute with the trailer by the flow of air forced in and not flowing through. Would that slow you down?
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 жыл бұрын
No, it won't make any difference. The wind only sees the frontal portion of the trailer. What really slows you down and hurts your fuel economy is "drag" and that is referring to the suction created behind the trailer. The faster you drive the more drag there is. That's why you see some semi trailers with those weird doors on the back to deflect wind.

I still don't get it. Bernoulli says the faster-moving air has LESS pressure. Of course, any time you have two speeds the question is "relative to what?" But relative to the walls of the trailer, the outside air is faster than the inside air, so it should produce high pressure INSIDE the trailer, not outside. Maybe it is the air on the outside sides of the trailer vs. the outside underneath? I can see how the air on the sides would move faster than the air underneath the trailer. So there would be a pressure differential between the underneath and the sides.
@gonagain
@gonagain Жыл бұрын
The moving air around the trailer does cause low pressure which lowers the pressure inside the trailer as well. It's a well-known fact and can affect some of the gauges inside of an aircraft, such as the altimeter and airspeed indicator, if the outside static air vent gets clogged and the pilot switches to the interior vent instead because the cabin pressure is lower than the surrounding atmosphere.

Hello again gonagain nice seeing you again. I like the face that you did the 2nd part of this. I was talking with a friend about what you said and I have sealed off my trailer and get very little dust in it but I haven't put my vent in the floor yet. Again I am going to make it to where I can close it off air tight like the rest of my trailer. Jeff my friend on the other hand has had trouble with the dust for years and I have tried to tell him he needs to seal his trailer but now after seeing your video he is going to vent it a bit more to see if that helps. We did do around the frame with flex seal and it helped a little we also found a hole in the wheel well where he hit something a few years ago on the road and it stuck in the wall of the trailer and he never knew it was there so we patched it up and flex sealed it to. I know I may be wrong with the vent in the floor but I have to try because I want to be able to pull cool air from under the trailer. I have a video about the vent I'll be using and it well be facing backwards so air won't push into it and with the rest of the trailer being sealed it shouldn't pull any air in while I am on the road and have it closed off. I'm hoping anyway. As always we wish your tomorrow is better than your today was. I'll let you know how it turns out with my vent but it may take awhile for me to do that.

Hey Den,. It's good that you've sealed your trailer as much as possible, but you still need to push air in with a scoop to pressurize it because that's what's going to keep the dust out. Not a vent, but a scoop. What type of trailer do you have? Is it a V nose like mine or different? The scoop has to be high up and away from the road dust.

@@gonagain Yes, I have a V-nose. As of right now, I'm not getting any dust in my trailer. I have been thinking about opening the vent up top that I blocked off. It's in the same place yours is and adding a little scoop like you did. When I put my floor vent in. To pull the heat out of the trailer I was thinking that would the upper vent open. And the floor vent closed that would help to keep the dust out that I may get when I put the floor vent in. I will be shutting the floor vent while I travel. But it may not be airtight.

@gonagain

You need them for two reasons. The first reason is that if you are carrying anything that has fuel in it then you'll need the vents for any fumes. The other reason is to keep the dust out by pressurizing the inside of the trailer. I'd prefer to get the trailer without vents so that I could place them properly though.

The other reason you need those vents is if you want to run any type of heater that's not electric (and maybe even then). You need the hi/lo vents unblocked by anything inside so that you have enough ventilation to not die in your sleep. I also run my rooftop fan in the exhaust mode on low all night. So quiet you can hardly hear it and only if you're listening for it. Cheers!
