This year the arctic blast hit us at -12 F (-24C) here in Missouri and our oldest rooster with huge waddles and comb got a lot of frostbite. This is the second time his comb got it but the first time his waddles got frostbite. We had two side vents that should have been wide open but just as you said we were worried it would be too cold. We also closed their door. Our mistake. Great advice Chad!
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm 7 ай бұрын
That’s tough but any birds with the big combs and wattles will have issues regardless, even putting their heads down to drink water it dips in a bit and gets wet will cause frostbite…same with snow. It will heal though, but we can still endeavour to eliminate all the moisture we can.

I’m really not sure if they mind, constantly pecking at the thing just to get a sip of water but what I do know is that if they have a bowl of water and it’s cold their wattles and comb will dip in the water as well making it easier to get frostbite. Maybe pecking the thingy keeps them busy too, almost like a toy.

@@HiddenSpringFarm I adopted my house bunny as an adult and he was already litter trained and neutered so it made my job a lot easier, and he helped train his companion when I adopted a friend for him, so I was pretty lucky. I do miss my bunnies, but not so much the mess all my pets made. I had 3 rabbits, 9 rats and 2 kittens in my house at that point. I found that many pets too much so I can't even imagine how you manage with all of yours!

I have one rabbit that came from living inside, He apparently was litter trained and they wanted me to take all their things that came with him, Litter box was one of them. I converted a coop for the rabbits and he has been having the time of his life in it lol. He lays in the litter box with his legs stretched out. I eventually stopped putting litter granules in it and now put hay or straw. I think if he was inside on lyno he would use it but since hes out side he just goes all over. Every once in a while he wants to be picked up and cuddled but other than that he loves it outside ;)

I have 2 male rabbits in one coop separated like your set up. so hes not alone, There is also a chicken that was getting picked on in there with them, the hen can sit up high and I have poop catchers under the roost. In the summer the Rabbits are in rabbit tractors side by side on the grass.

Could have built a 3 bedroom house if you consolidate all those structures. Very much not for profit operation. I make my coops out of free pallets from ace hardware. Geese and turkeys do not seem to need a coop. Ducks do not roost they need a dog house size shelter. Chickens are the neediest they like to be 3-4 feet up but they lay the most and lay through the winter. Wood stove is the cheapest if you access to free wood and have a barn sized structure. I set up an enclosed truck trailer for the geese to use in the winter but they hate confined spaces they would rather freeze there butts off. I use a 9 gallon bucket with a 250w trough heater for the geese but they like puddles more when the temperatures increase and there is melt. Fill up the kitty pool once in a while as well for them to bathe.

Does the male pig get lonely being isolated from the other pigs? The male rabbit too? Do pigs get neutered? I just wonder if they get lonely by themselves. Better to be lonely than to be on someone's dinner plate tho.
