My grandpa have some of the most hardy guppies, like really hardy that he keeps in his small indoor pond with no filter, no water circulation, no water changes and my cousin's giant red-eared slider. He's only been giving them plain bread for 30 years+ and they still keeps on thriving and breeding new generations, the only thing that they're mising is the colors, they have a full black body with a speck of color on their tail, some males will have a purple body, red fins and some spots on their tail but they're pretty rare, they're also very small and skinny unlike the domesticated guppies.

I had a guppy tank for 2 years. I tried to add different guppy’s from different places and they lived for a long time. They made babies like crazy! I was giving them away to friends and family and keeping some of my favorites. Buy by the 2 year mark I noticed some of them were starting to have bent spines and wired looking belly’s. I scrapped the whole tank. Had a friend take all the mails and gave all the females to a local pet shop.

For guppys, I find that corys are just like great ! They do not compete, they each take care of their own layer - and they keep the substrate clean ! Well, actually, guppys WILL be agressive towards very young corys, but once the corys are 1 cm long, they are safe.. I have my 200L (~50Gal) tank which started with 10 guppys, now, after 6 month more like 150 of them - and some look absolutely gorgeous.. Also started with 10 corys, now have like.. 50 ! (but I had to pick the eggs and let them grow in a small separate 20L (5 Gal) tank).. Death rate is about 2 guppys per month and 1 cory per month - I think that's reasonable ! A few Tetras in the tank and a couple of bristlenoses !.. And 2 kribs (which I need to pass along to someone else) Then the Kribs (Pelvicachromis pulsher) - kind of keep the guppys in check.. those that make it through are the strong ones ! Oh and also... I suspect some of my original guppys might be endler guppy (P. wingei) hybrids (the third generation lyra tail color shape kinds of give it away - but that's fine by me)
@jasonnikolic3 жыл бұрын
Interesting you mentioned buying sick guppies. I had the same thought process (I need to save them!) but the store had a policy of not selling sick or weak fish as they are liable for refunding you if it dies or makes the other fish in you tank ill, as the communication of "I want that fish because it looks ill" is the store admitting to selling you a faulty product. It made sense.

There should be two types and one gives birth less like in some dogs they only go in heat once a year instead of twice. That way they'll fill my 5 gallon slower I prefer to feed them freeze dried foods. I think they need less structure in the tank. When it comes to the line breeding thing some people appreciate mutts like aussie doodles they look better in my opinion than alot of breeds and each mutt is unique Bengals cats are cool too and the calico color so in guppies I look for something black orange and white. Which mine are and the males are half black endlers with a orange tail and whitish orange ish endler stripe.

I want to breed, but not that many at a time. Is it inhumane to “abort” a good number of fry immediately after birth? If not, how do I keep the number at a reasonable number? I don’t want to get into selling them but I do want to breed my own since they don’t live extremely long and I don’t always want to buy new ones to replace once they die.
@hopetikvah49064 жыл бұрын
Although it may make some fish owners uncomfortable, this practice known as "culling" is no inhumane, as long as you make an effort to dispose of the fish in the quickest, most painless method possible. It's something most breeders do.

I just start aquarium hobby with 3 guppy and one molly. Balloon Goldenpanda Molly seems feel part of the group in beginning, but then one small guppy start to get aggressive for molly. Now i got more molly from shop. But still this same gyppy bully same molly. Now i know why. This guppy want showoff for female guppy. And they make fry a lot now. Twise already in same month. Now i got nealy 100 guppy fry in different age. And even big mollys are not eat those fry. Guppy fry seems all survive easily, even i wont give them special treatment. So really got soon overpopulation issue what just start from 3. Beta tank is on prosess, where i just put female guppys, because now fot only mini nano tank to put females.

@Chinesetakeout3826 ай бұрын
If you’re not ready for the potentially numbers they can reproduce to, I’d personally put them with species that can eat the fry. It’s a little gruesome, but it’s more ethical that letting the tank get overstocked without a place to send the extra guppies. I personally keep my guppies with a betta (with bettas, it obviously depends on their perosnallity, mine might as well be Ghandi like). and some African dwarf frogs.
