Cisco took a massive step backwards in the testing style of the new CCNA exam. In this video, I explain the differences as I see it between the new and old CCNA exam and why I think ADD-ish people (like me) might struggle with it.

Thank you for your excellent vid, as always! Today I passed the CCNA 200-301 exam with a 925 score! The material and resources I found the most useful are, ExamHighPass CCNA 200-301 practice exam. I can confirm that it is valid for 2022. Most of their Q&A shows are at the actual exam.

This is why I wish Cisco would use Red Hat's approach and make their exams 100% hands-on. I think a lot more people then would be more apt to lab different scenarios than to brain dump.

I feel the same! For Cisco to take the CompTIA route is a mistake; to be honest, memorizing 100+ Q&A isn't even that hard. Now people have more incentive to memorize brain-dumps especially with "do you remember this" type of questions and not enough time to understand what the questions are asking.

A friend of mine went for a interview for network engineer this week and was asked what version of CCNA he recently qualified with. Some companies are recognising already the new CCNA is more complex and see it as a higher certification. I have CCNA and CCNA cyberops (used to be CCNP) and will look to renew this year. Looks like the old CCNA 200-125 is not as valuable to some employers.

No, because the questions were the same on each test. And Cisco rightfully assumed that people would take a lot of time on these extensive questions, but if they were brain dumping it, you just made the test easier overall, since a bigger portion was not people sitting there and figuring things out, but racing through questions they were brain dumping that should've taken longer, which equaled few questions overall.

It's truly a rewarding experience to walk away from a exam you felt like it was a beast and you were able to manipulate and perform diagnostic actions to achieve mr ICMP replys or Neighbor adjacency... in a sense that practicality boosts your confidence to go out the corporate world and take on network configs, this now to me defines the difference between doing a course at University level or a Technical Vendor Based Certification. Seems like we taken a step back indeed. I am also awaiting Jeremy's CCNP Encor 350-401 course as major 500 long text books scare me, i rather lab and apply whats taught from the Videos, its whats worked for me and hope continue to does so in future. Hoping we can create enough attention for Cisco to Change things up again! As usual thanks for keeping it Simple Jeremy!

I got my CCNA back in 2013 doing the two exam route, which was manageable for me as I have quite bad ADHD, which makes it difficult memorising a lot of information. I'm looking to recertify again and going through a course on udemy at the moment. Luckily I remember some of the stuff from the original exam. Subnetting is easy for me and I can still configure most of the basic stuff on routers and switches. But I definitely need a refresher and I'm nervous about the amount of questions.

I failed the old exam on Feb 21st on my first and only attempt at Cisco. I remember fumbling with the mechanics of my last simulation for almost 10 minutes and running out of time; forfeiting those final points. I'm hoping I have better success with the new exam. I take it this Friday, the 13th. The old exam was extremely diverse, time constricted, and just plain old challenging with no idea of which subset of material you will be tested on. I failed because I didn't lab every single concept and approached it with mostly theoretical knowledge. Now that I have labbed most of the material, I'm not sure how much it will help. Bottom line, you just have to know all the fundamentals, which makes more sense to get your foot in the door. I'm sure the CCNP and of course the CCIE is mostly hands-on. I feel like the old exam required at least 6 months of hands-on experience that no company is openly willing to allow you to attain. (Without experience, of course.)

Jeremy : I just wish these exams would become 100% or 90% hands on with scenarios, and at the end of each Scenario you have a grade me button which says yup configured correctly or nope you got more troubleshooting to do and if you get through those scenarios you pass. Make the test to even start be a scenario like another exam which I will not name hint begins with a HAT that I passed where you have to configure a basic IP address to be able to see the webpage which starts your exam scenario, for Cisco maybe pointing to a tftp server to download your config to allow you into the router you will be configuring could start it. Jeremy you plan on making a followup focus on nugget at CBT Nuggets to help with what to focus on? sense they want to make this test now a can you remember the option/tab. I guess that's what I get for going into Linux Jobs past few years and letting my CCNA expire thinking ohh the new one will be much better. Seems like this one is a lets throw all the CCNA's like wireless, security into one but dumb it down. I do agree with the others this is going to make this cert highly brain dumped which in 2020 is unacceptable to me with the technology we have which can generate questions on the fly such as doing a VLSM scenario and just having a algorithm change the subnet being given and the amount of networks or "save the hosts" lol we need.

Hi +Keeping IT Simple - Jeremy Ciaora ! I think memorizing 102 questions is easy. I attended a bootcamp before and after the 5 day training, they asked to study and memorize 670+ brain dump questions and should able to answer all of that in less than 30 mins (if my memory serves me right), also, we are allowed only to make 5 or less wrong answers. I never came back for that assessment until I was introduced to CBT Nuggets watching your series + intense 3 months of studying, along with Lammle's book. Then I came back, took my assessment there, I wasn't able to finish 640+ questions in time, took me like 3hrs or what. But damn am I happy I almost made a perfect score. I felt confident after, then I scheduled myself for the exam and nailed it. Now I'm waiting for the new ENCOR series at CBT Nuggets. It's all thanks to your passionate, enthusiastic way of teaching that made students more interested and wanting for more. Keep it up! Keep IT Simple!

5:40 - I agree, brain dumps on the old CCNA caused the change. I took and failed my ICND1 back in 2016, then I added brain dumps to my studying. There were 150-200 questions in them. I then passed my ICND 1 and 2 the next time I took each one. Call it cheating, I call it studying. Whatever. Then a few years later, I looked at the brain dumps for the later versions of ICND 1 and 2, as well as the new CCNA, and they were over 500 questions! Way too much to read, much less memorize. So I said the hell with it, I'm in better IT jobs now, and let my CCNA expire. But before you rip on me for brain dumping, remember that I really did LEARN from them, I didn't just memorize stuff.

I have ADHD and I completely bombed the exam. Having taken and passed CCENT I felt the questions were good and made you think. I have also taken the previous ICND2 exam and failed by 1 question. Even though I failed I still felt really good and proud of myself because I was right there and almost had it. The new CCNA... is kind of bogus, I felt a lot of questions were almost irrelevant. There is almost no troubleshooting aspect to the exam. It’s just fact checking like Jeremy said. When I study I apply it to my mind in a troubleshooting scenario. Not remembering in “x” UI if you go to this page, select “c” option and then click on the drop down, what options are displayed? Why would I need to remember those exact specifics? I focus more on understanding the network theories, troubleshooting and creation not to an exact location of a small thing on a UI. I look to the bigger picture not this... whatever this exam has become. That said, I have to retrain my brain now to account for these illogical questions because I still need the CCNA as it’s still highly valued in IT. It’s just a bit unfortunate the quality has dropped. There’s my rant, I’ll get over it and get my CCNA and move on.

Hmm, I think the ENCOR exam will do the same thing. I even got the feeling from the Cisco Press book on ENCOR that they really quickly go over topics and go way less deep than the old route/switch/tshoot books. Since the new stuff automates alot but you'll need to be able to figure out if some automation went wrong, what exactly went wrong. So I think even deeper knowledge would be required. So I'm not really happy with this exam change.

The old exam was terrifying and comprehensive and way way better than any random list of multiple choice radio button selections. Last time I tested I was kinda sorta confident on the multiple choices but I knew I killed the labs, which made me feel much better about how my knowledge translated to hands-on. This change sounds awful and you'll get way more braindumps since MCQs are much easier to memorize than lab concepts for the cheater, and for the dump seller memorization doesn't matter if you're a crooked test center. Prepare for the value of a CCNA becoming even more diluted than it is now.

They have software AI to detect brain dumps now during the exam based on exactly how you answer the questions (won't give away how). You can look it up, I'm not fabricating this assertion. If the question truly is "do you remember" or variations of that, the only appropriate answer is either a yes or a no. How would the test site know if whatever answer you give is true. Can they determine what you do or do not remember?

PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION I AM LITERALLY LOST HERE: THIS IS WRITTEN ON THE CISCO WEBSITE: These Cisco courses are recommended to help you meet these prerequisites: Implementing and Administering Cisco Solutions (CCNA) v1.0 IS IT RECOMMENDED TO HAVE CCNA CERTIFICATE TO BE CERTIFIED IN THE 350-701 SCOR COURSE !?!?!?!?!

Based on the information in this video. The new CCNA test seems like a major improvement. The labs are free online now, so you can practice practice practice. I think Cisco did an awesome job creating the new test. If you want a challenge, do what you learned in real life where it counts. Most people don't like change. I understand.

That's what was so great about the old Ccna the simulation exams that allowed you to get a scenario use the ? to see your options once you got to the right mode and show your knowledge by figuring it out. Maybe you Keith And Chuck need to go take over Cisco exams and say you want good Certfied people's heres the things you need to test. Enjoying the new Ccna on Cbt nuggets but man if I have to remember tabs and checkboxes without getting a visual or lab type question where I can float around yikes! I don't know how far you can go into depth Jeremy but maybe a nugget on the memorize or focus keys for this exam . It would really suck to fail an exam knowing the mode and what it does but fail because I don't have every option under a command remembered or what tab was called for an extra feature in DNA or Wireless controller. My Test is April 1st. P.S Glad Rico and his bricks made it to the new Cbt Nuggets and the new real world example of how to apply Vlsm was perfect loving the new course , been in the Linux Redhat world last few years and want to update my Cisco skills for 2020.

I don’t agree with you on the “harder to dump” thing. If you get so many questions in the exam, people will feel like they can only pass, if they memorize all the questions and answers as “I don’t have time to think about it”. Plus if the majority of the questions are “do you remember” type, it will be easier to dump. Hands on heavy exam would be the way to go with “do you understand how it works” questions, because sure you can dump that as well, but kinda make it pointless.

lol, this exam sounds alot like the VCP5 exam I took a few years ago. Do you remember this, memorization type tests. Those types of questions are ok, but shouldn't be 100% of an exam, maybe 50%.

So... Did you pass? I'm sad to hear that it's strictly just questioning and answer. You're right about the old CCNA test being tough but yet rewarding. I mean I remember taking the test, and just get deep focused in on it, and then looking up and realizing that an hour has already passed and I'm already 90% done the test. The variation between the questions, simlets, kind of broke things up and kept things moving along. Sadly, I'm a guy who has problems focusing with repetitive items. I get bored, and need a little variation. I'm hoping to ccnp track isn't the same "style"

This was a good video! But I think that you should be taking a certification as learning something to use in your career and not just a test to make more $$! Of course everybody wants to make $$...I think that is the way most people see the CCNA certification or any certs.....I don't know anybody else, but I want to be the BEST and get some KNOWLEDGE!

I took my ICND 2 two days before the deadline in Feb and had very little simulation questions and I felt exactly the way you explained. It felt like a 5 round fight. I was wondering if any of the new material crept in before the dead line? I actually thought I was taking the wrong test, however I did pass. Any one else take it near the dead line and have material that didn't even seem relevant?

The strategy is simpler now, it’s not fun but it’s easier now. You don’t have to get all questions right. Two days with your face stuck to a book memorizing stuff you’ll pass.

I don't expect to have any trouble with the new exam. I have a very long attention span (usually). I guess my only slight concern is an ambiguous question and giving the wrong answer because I thought they were asking for something else. Happens a lot in K-12 and college exams. I think learning the CLI commands (in long-term memory) is best done with on-the-job experience, not exams, so I am kind of happy the exam is more (or all) multiple choice. With that being said, I still believe studying the CLI commands and doing labs is still very important in preparing for a real job. I love learning using books. I don't like using videos, so I do all of my studying using the OCG as well as Cisco and/or Boson Net Simulator and practice questions. I can read faster than someone talks, so if I use videos, I play the videos at double speed (or 1.5 if the person talks fast). Also, it is easy to re-read lines or read certain lines slower, but videos are too much work to rewind over and over if needed. Also, writing books requires a thought and editing process that makes for better content than videos. That is my experience in reading over 50,000 pages of educational material over the years. I am glad that videos are available such as CBT as it seems tons of people don't like reading much. As you maybe can tell, not only do I like reading, but I like writing. Thus my comment is longer than anybody elses. haha.

Hi Jeremy, I'm taking the cbt nuggets course for the 200-301, but after hearing what you said I have a question for you- were there many questions regarding the output of show commands (or regarding output in general)? the only reason i'm taking the exam is because I wanted to be good network technician with foundational knowledge and some hands on exercises, but I really don't want to sit down and memorize the entire output of show commands. I feel like it is a waste of time and it's not going to help me (or anyone) at being a network engineer

Pablo what's going to be your approach?, With any cert or skill I always look at the topic say okay real world vs exam knowledge , I keep a seperate section in my onenote just for the real world tips like Jeremy gives. I might now put the test out a week just to go through every interface and guide on the exam blueprint and screenshot the tabs options , the options in each command other than the base config commands to perform a task which is going to suck. What's your approach going to be bro?
