Yes, the Solo Stove is smoke free! We use ours every trip - but the trim ring is upside down in the video. When turned over the air circulates properly and the flames come out of the upper holes. It’s awesome, just like your video - thanks for another beautiful adventure! 😎
@arturowagner47283 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the flames are not so high or smoke filled, since the smoke is being sucked back in for a second burn, there is less oxygen to fuel the flames... Kind of like a catalytic converter in car exhaust or a PCV valve on an engine...

I've got a Solo Ranger and it's close to smoke free. But like Bob said, ring is upside down and that defeats the vents.

Years ago we acquired a washer drum from an old top loader washing machine. I wanted it for when it was windy and the campsite fire ring allowed to much wind drift of embers. However it sure works like a poor man's Solo stove. Contains the embers, some but very little smoke and more heat than a normal ground ring campfire. I'm not poor but I'd rather put my money into beer.
All I can say is “love you guys”. How’s that for intellectual and constructive feedback ?🤦♂️

The ring on the top of the solo stove is upside down which does hinder the solo stove functioning as designed, as well as the firewood is not supposed to be above the holes on the inside rim of the solo stove. We have the 30in Yukon, and love it! There is another brand that makes a smokeless in the USA but much more $. The awesome part of having your own solo stove for fulltime rv’ing is who knows what people put in the camp fire rings at all the state parks of which the chemicals leach out every burn. With your own solo stove, you make sure nothing toxic is burned in your solo stove. Peace of mind for sure.

For campfires, using an old washing machine tub works the same way, allowing oxygen to enter the sides to stoke the fire. The smoke doesn't burn twice. The wood simply burns more efficiently because of the abundance of oxygen from the side, instead of NO oxygen from the sides in the park campfire pit.

And I thought that we were the only people on the planet with an aversion to campfires ! I once had the audacity to suggest on an owner's club forum that people should learn how to build proper fires to minimize offending smoke for camping neighbors who may not care for it as they do. Wow ! Did I catch hell. Everyone took it personally and flat told us that if we didn't like campfire smoke, we should just go camp somewhere else. Shortly thereafter, we sold that rig and never went to that forum again. For Yoly, it's not just the smell but the natural irritants contained in the smoke. She has to take allergy eye drops on many days and she has very strong reactions to smoke. She has had two eye surgeries to remove a pterygium caused by irritants. I have heard people describe the appeal of campfires as a nostalgic thing harkening back to the good old days on the prairie when men were men etc etc. Truth is, they didn't consider it nostalgic at all as it served an important function .... heat, cooking and protection from wildlife. In case anyone hasn't noticed, we have technology today that performs these tasks for us. We don't really need campfires ? When I see people just sitting there staring into the fire like it was a form of entertainment, I wonder if they stare at their dryer going round and round as well :-) I know we're in a minute minority and are in no position to judge others and their habits but I cannot count the number of times that we've had to pack up everything and move to a different campground or site because a camping neighbor was so deficient of common courtesy and knowledge of campfire building.

Despite full timing solo in a 45ft DRV Houston with a walk-in closet, I find folding then rolling my clothes makes selecting items out of bins and baskets far easier. Sure I could reduce my wardrobe by 80%, but I like options.. Mother would say this made me a difficult to please child... ok, ok.. so maybe she has something there..... If one is dumping their bins out, for dramatic effect or otherwise, to find a specific item they're under utilizing the simplistic beauty of bins and baskets. Recycling card board dividers found in boxes of glass bottles and jars into bin/basket dividers is a great way to keep rolled up shirts standing upright. Keeping shirt and other items in their place allows you to return the cleaned item to the same spot. Soon you will remember exactly which item is in which compartment in the bin/basket. You'll find yourself grabbing exactly what you need or want without having to look. These trimmable dividers work great for catch all bins/baskets and drawers. No more shuffling around to find that one specific item. Using simply card stock and a laminator or cellophane tape you can make custom divider. Or use cellophane tape and dividers saved from the last case of wine to make customized dividers to fit a specific need. Cheers!

Had our Solo stove for about 8 months. I would say the burn is noticeably FASTER! I go through more wood on the Solo Stove vs or open ring. One other note... the heat really only comes out the top. This means there is plenty of heat for cooking, but there isn't any lateral heat like you'd get from an open ring or shallow pit. You've got to have a blazing fire or be really close to use it for warmth. But, for ambiance, can't beat it!!! We love it! It's just not perfect at everything...

I have been using the duraflame type logs for years and won't switch back to wood. 1) you know how long the fire will be before it goes out lol- 3 hours, 4 hours, 90 min 2) far less smoke and you won't smell like a campfire 3) the heat is consistent and HOT. Two logs max will do ya for most nights. Add more if needed for larger fire show lol. As the log softens, you can spread it out around the whole pit to give even heat to everyone around the fire. You will hardly have to mess with it as it burns unlike wood 4) in a pinch, you can put out the log and easily use it the next night. 5) less space in vehicle because you need less than real wood 6) in the end, more cost effective 7) downside for full-timers, you have to know your seasons and where you can buy them at the best price. Some places carry all year long.

I have a solo stove bonfire and it lives in my yard. Never been in or around the camper. They're terrible for keeping your knees-down warm and the heat just goes straight up, up, and away. For the money, I don't know that it's all that super-awesome. If you could bury it, I think it would be better than sitting on the ground. Your buddy had his top ring upside down and is missing the airgap stand to help it breathe properly. There's almost no smoke with it, but it's a huge compromise.

Train? The Cog Railway. New England in the Fall is epic. Grew up there and I’m sure the flume was a highlight. Too bad “The Old Man in the Mountain” is no longer a site to see. It fell off the mountain.
