The reality is Busta would have lost the point - 100% sure - anyway. If they'd replayed that point, Nishikori would have been cheated. So, even if the linesman did call before the contact - and believe me, even on 0.25x speed it's absolutely simultaneous - the right result happened on that particular point. Busta just behaved like a baby wanting something that he didn't deserve....
@djepp Жыл бұрын
I agree, the line call was simultaneous with the shot and Carreño Busta was nowhere near the ball. He was just nervous and frustrated because of Nishikori's comeback. What happened was fair, just sucks to lose from 2 sets up so it was understandable that he was mad, of course he shouldn't have screamed or thrown his bag but yeah.

Of course Busta was going to loose that point, but rules say that when a linesman calls the ball out, the point inmediately finishes. So if the call was simultaneous to the shot, why did the umpire give the point to Nishikori? It would’ve been the unfairiest decision ever? Probably, but it was the right thing to do if he wanted to follow the rules.
@2CSST2 Жыл бұрын
@@xavii00 No, you have a wrong understanding of how this rule works. In tennis, some rules are up to a certain interpretation and judgement, this is one of them. It's like for instance the speed limit on highways, obviously the police don't enforce the rule strictly, the limit serves more as a guide line for reasonable conduct. Other rules, like having an immatriculation plate or the fact that a net service is replayed, ARE 100% strict, but again not all are, and the one in question in the video definitely isn't. If you watched tennis for a while and payed attention, you'll remark that this rule has never been a strict one like you're implying, you'll see plenty of examples where the umpire's interpretation and judgement come into play in scenario exactly like this one. So you have no grounds to be pedantic about it, or for Pablo to act like a baby about it.

This was not about taking the right or the wrong decision, this was about following what actually rules say. So if the call came simultaneously to Nishikori’s hit, the point had to be repeated, no care if Nishikori was winning that point 100/100 of the times. And why did the umpire let Busta challenge the call if it wasn’t going to change his decision? Busta’s anger and frustration after loosing that way a match he was 2 sets up in a 4R of a GS are completely justified to me.
@JesusChrist-qi8yo Жыл бұрын
For those saying the rule is the rule, the rule also states that if the call comes the same time as the shot, it is a judgment call. When you play the video at 0.25x speed, you can see that the call came less than 0.25s before Kei hit his BH, and when Kei was already in the swinging motion. The human brain is unable to process the call so fast so the conventional rule doesn't apply here and it becomes a judgment call. The judgment call by the umpire is that the call didn't have any effect on Kei's swing. And I have to agree with the umpire here. If you don't believe me, it takes around 0.17s for audio stimulus to be acknowledged by the brain, takes around another 0.10s for the brain to send a stimulus to the muscle. And since we're hearing the out call from the mic next to the line umpire, the call will still take time to reach Kei, in this case, 0.035s (count the dimensions on the tennis court and make an estimation to around 12m). That alone is already 0.305s which is more than the time between the call and the contact. Hence, not an argument that the umpire was correct.

Very interesting analysis, but here's the main problem with what the umpire did: He let Busta challenge the call with the interpretation that if it turned out to be in, it would a reply. Otherwise, what's the point of letting Busta challenge if regardless of whether the ball was in or out he was gonna lose the point regardless + lose a crucial challenge if the ball was out? This makes 0 sense and would give Busta no benefits to challenge whatsoever. Therefore, since he made the mistake of allowing Busta to challenge, he should have honored this as a replay. Otherwise, I agree that no challenge should have been allowed and point needed to go to Kei
@JesusChrist-qi8yo Жыл бұрын

Imagine you stand on the court for 5 hours and lose the whole match just because of 1 stupid call and 2 unintentional mistakes. Think about that, both players look tired, Kei went for safe play and Carreno showed more effort and precision. If you look at the drill fight, Busta always stayed on top of the ball, and Kei ran around to rescue himself from losing. Because of his 2 unintentional mistakes, that was why Carreno lost 2 points, one in return, and one in the drill, but he didn't give up. Everyone made mistakes with their contributed effort, but not that sleepy umpire.
@huynhphuquoc6016 Жыл бұрын
I would say both umpires were bad; both sat on one side of the court while the ball bounced vertically on the other side, which made them hard to observe because the player blocked the vision; if the side judge was sleepy, then at least the main umpire stayed awake enough to make corrections because main umpire had a different observation. I would rather let the ball kid make the call.

Call didn’t effect play because Kai was already through the shot and PCB had no chance, so umpire ruled in Kai’s favor. Seems totally right to me. What exactly is this other rule you all think is so applicable here?
@markoshun Жыл бұрын
@Tom R Yes, your explanation is very simple and I understand what you saying. Thanks. But the umpires routinely make judgement calls re: whether there was a hindrance, or if a player had a play on a ball or not. This seems like a normal situation like that. The call came close enough to the shot that even with rewind there is still debate, the challenge came after shot, and Busta was headed to the opposite side of the court. This all puts the umpire into area of making judgement. I am looking for the actual rule you think applies because I don't think there is one.
