@@johnscott4693 For those pensioners that live in certain countries, their pensions are frozen and they DO NOT receive "index linked" pensions for which they have paid the same as everyone else. Furthermore, they DO NOT receive any other "State financial benefits". There are many ex-pat pensioners who are ex-service men and women who receive a fraction of the State pension for which they paid everything that they were required to pay. Successive governments of the countries where this policy of not uprating UK State pensions applies take a very dim view of the British Government's discriminatory and underhanded conduct.

Of course he’s not going to say it directly, that would be political suicide but what Starmer did say publicly is “pensioners have nothing to fear from me” he also droned on at length about an elderly lady who stayed in bed until late so she didn’t have to put her heating on and wrapped up in thermal clothing to keep warm when she finally got up. He then went on to make a point of what kind of life was this for someone in retirement. Within a short time of gaining power he cuts the winter fuel allowance proving he and his party couldn’t care less about the elderly. All he’s proven so far is that he’s a compulsive liar and lacks compassion. Labour could easily have reduced the settlement offered to public sector workers by a small margin and the winter fuel allowance could have been kept. If they had any sense they could have used this to their advantage by saying we can give only give you this percentage because we have to cover the cost of the winter fuel allowance. The unions would have made themselves look really bad if they disagreed and Labour would have given themselves a lot of credibility with the general public and the elderly at the same time. Personally, I doubt Reeves, who was struggling to live on £85K a year would have been able to come to that conclusion on her own. She didn’t even have the sense to negotiate improvements in productivity and efficiency. Pensioners don’t have the option of being able to work to rule or strike though so are an easy target. What I guarantee though is that caving to the unions will backfire massively as they’ll be back for more money within twelve months.

Basic state pension in the UK is currently £169.50 per week. I live in the Republic Of Ireland where for my neighbours the state pension is €277.30 per week which equates to £233.49. That is over £60 a week more than I am allowed to claim.

That because it's the cut off point for the age of the pensioner..... ie 66 years, anyone born after that isn't a pensioner. Next year it will be 1959 and the year after that 1960... unless labour change that as well

I used to work in a bank and I saw many customers to discuss their finances, some of whom were on the poverty line, others who were very wealthy. This was during the last upheaval of our economy at the start of the credit crunch and it was mooted then that the Winter Fuel Payment would go. It was quite astonishing how many pensioners had an opinion then on the Winter Fuel payment, thinking how shocking it was that they were even considering taking it away. Many would tell me that “I use it to for my grandchildren to give them at Christmas” was a very popular use for the Winter Fuel payment, others included “it pays for me and my husband to have a city break”. Or “we treat ourselves to that wine offer in the Telegraph” or “It pays towards our holiday”. Unfortunately, Britain has had 14 years of tory Populism, and it’s hard to have to face the realities that we cannot afford to give away money to those who don’t really need it. This payment is NOT a right, it’s a benefit and should only available to those who genuinely need it. But I think you’ll find people’s interpretation of ‘need’ is different.
