I remember I bought the 12 inch extended vinyl of that ABC song and used to blast it out on my (cassette) stereo and speakers in my fiesta mk1 at the time as a young 18 year old (It probably was not even that loud, I think the stereo head unit cost me £5!). Those were the days. I'd forgotten completely about the Beastie Boys being around, another album I used to try to harm my young ears with, happy days ! Lovely to see Simon and Janice in this....

This is a very rough set of edits, there was probably alot more than this and even rougher edits than this one like full studio tapes and such but yeah a fair bit of this never made it to the transmission copy. Its possible that the charts were done on the rough cut but seperated because of the need to quickly replace on demand for the day broadcast. On another unedited version the chart list is after the episode stuff, randomly bolted on the end

Allo young man, THIS was surreal. I love how they're playing around and in some cases they're being caught out by the producer? I remember getting the NOW! double cassette takes.
@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Жыл бұрын
it is very interesting indeed to see just how it was filmed and edited, I got it with countless others from an archive, unfortunately I think the BBC have banned alot of ones featuring jimmy saville, which for me is particularly sad because if you ignore that monster your left with a really rich history of both music and visual effects. I will try to upload more interesting ones with bits not seen on tv before though as there are a fair few :)
@davidaston5773 Жыл бұрын
@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 The BBC ONLY ban Saville so they can protect themselves. Johnny Lydon has said in interviews everyone knew about Saville. It was an open secret. @KeiranCounsellKC1994 is this before the audience come in? How did you gain this footage then ? Are you in the business 🤔?
@KeiranCounsellKC19943 ай бұрын
@@gemini802 no, generally what happens with top of the pops and shows like it is they film all the sequences independantly with the audience, they edit all the camera changes and stuff live onto a mastertape so you end up it all being like big blocks, this allows the show to reuse the performances or to juggle them around should the charts change between filming and broadcast, sometimes performances and acts are dropped and some rough edit tapes or leaked broadcast tapes feature some of the dropped performances. What they then typically do is film all of the linking material with the producers with an audience present, this would also contain reshoots and bloopers. They then produce the chart graphics with a voice over narration. All of these tapes are then gathered up and edited onto another mastertape which is the rough edit of the episode, sometimes they are incomplete with missing bits or bloopers left in, then when they are satasfied with the structure and timing of the episode they produce the polished broadcast version. None of this footage is filmed especially for a rough edit, its all part of the raw production tapes for the episode. Youll notice that the clock title card says titles because its so rough its not the episode title card and clock its the clock and title card from the title sequences tape at the BBC. Largely these title cards are used so that the editors and transmitting and archive staff know what the tape is without having to play it. Im not sure how many of these tapes still exist within the BBC archive as the rough edit tapes generally are not seen as important as the broadcast master tapes because they are not designed with broadcast intentions, they are strictly for internal BBC stuff like producers, production staff and management clearence of the intended episode. I know that many raw studio tapes (the tapes before this tape) are used when it comes to special top of the pops episodes that show acts from the past as they do not contain the video text introduction overlays or the presenters so it allows for more freedom in the edits. These tapes were leaked from the BBC archive at some point and found their way into the hands of private collectors who then posted them online, there are quite a few online
