In April of 2022, the Milwaukee Police Department released two edited videos of the in-custody death of Keishon Thomas, as well as a shooting in the lobby of District 5.
The first incident happened on Feb. 23. Thomas was pulled over by police near 22nd and Capitol for a traffic violation around 1:55 a.m. There was a warrant for him tied to other traffic violations, so he was arrested and taken to District 5.
District 5 bookers conducted multiple cell checks, but shortly before 6 p.m., Thomas was found unresponsive. Despite life-saving measures, Thomas was pronounced dead, police said.

Dude killed himself by eating the evidence, plain and simple. I'm sure that he didn't intend to kill himself, that was an accidental OD and it's a tragedy. My condolences for his loved ones. He thought that he could destroy the evidence and wouldn't have as serious a charge. It was a bad decision, unfortunately.

Honestly, the officers showed genuine care and concern. They strongly suggested he go to the hospital and The fact that 10 or so officers came RUNNING kinda says it all. I can’t say I’d ask for anything more other than for this young man to have survived. Good to see officers doing what they’re suppose to do👏🏾

Every officer at the jail, showed up once that button was hit 😔🥺 they genuinely cared about this young man... You could see the defeat & sadness in their body language when they saw his lifeless body. This young man, genuinely thought he could handle the amount of drugs he had swallowed, hence why he refused medical treatment. So unfortunate, rest in Heaven 🙏🏼🤍🕊️

The sad truth, NO ONE wants to discuss the genuine concern the officers showed. This story won’t make CNN, because the cops did their job. They are only interested if the cops didn’t do their job, ESPECIALLY if it’s a white cop and black individual that’s detained. That sad truth that’s the society we live in today. I’m a federal defense attorney, and in 27 years I’ve never seen the media be this bad. National media will only report news, if it benefits the political party they belong. It use to not be this way, but everyone has agendas and until the work agenda is nipped in the butt, stories about cops doing their job will continue being back page news.

What did he expect? Even after he told them the officers can be heard suggesting he goes, but they can't force him that's against the law, he also refused to go saying he didn't want to and that he'd be ok. Cell checks need to be done but officers don't enter cells to check inmates, it's usually a pass by to ensure they are still in their cells. Otherwise if they had to wake inmates your going to have a lot of angry inmates, with lack of sleep

She'd do her best but it usually wasn't enough. Calls like that were really hard on her. The job took a toll. I have a mountain of respect for our first responders. It takes a powerful soul to put white on red, or run into a blaze. I'm just so sorry for the trauma it causes...

Yeah it's such a soul killing job. I would love to be an EMT or someone and help people, but I know I'm just not mentally strong enough. I could probably handle dead bodies and gore okay, and could probably handle gross knife cuts or whatever where the patient is just wounded but survives. But the first time someone was alive but close to death and it was on me to keep them alive if I could, and they died anyway.. that would fuck me up forever. I know I couldn't handle that guilt. But I have nothing but respect for the ones who do these jobs.

And this is why many states now have "good samaritan" laws! Back in the 80's I was driving truck and stopped to help a young man out who had a flat tire on a busy highway. I'm a giant of a guy (literally), so when this young man just randomly stepped OUT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC when I grabbed him by the upper arm and pulled him back into the breakdown lane I accidentally dislocated his shoulder... I felt bad, but it happened so fast! Just a blur and to this day I have no idea how I reacted so fast! But I thought even a dislocated shoulder was better then being hit by a Mack truck doing 70 down the interstate fully loaded because you had a brain cramp and evidentially forgot where you were! But no! the guy tried to sue me for his hospital bills trying to blame me for his stupidity! To make a long story short, I got the best lawyer money could buy and counter sued for Time lost, Legal costs and Mental Stress, and everything else my lawyer could possibly find to tack onto the bill. Long story short it ended up being one of the shortest cases in world history (I exaggerate a tad) but, no the kid lost big time and I'm not sure if he EVER finished paying my lawyer fees off, but he did pay me for my lost time and mental stress which cost him more than his hospital bills did at the time! Hope he learned a good lesson about greed and stupidity but I doubt it, you can't fix stupid. But the point is there is ONLY one reason these parents would sue the police if the police are being honest about what happened and that is greed! I mean if the police had FORCED this man to go to the hospital and get blood tests they would have sued over that too! I hate the current state of affairs with what is going on with American cops but fairness and honesty must be placed first and foremost at all times, and this was on this young mans head alone, as long as the cops did all their cell checks on time then they did all they could.

What I don’t understand is how an office can unwillingly take you to the hospital if you say something they deem to be “unsafe” to yourself or others, even if you don’t actually say anything, it’s whatever they determine to be “unsafe”. But then when you’re under the influence they let you CHOOSE if you want to go or not?? How does that make sense? If you said “I wanna KMS” they would baker act you. Let me make this clear - he was reckless and irresponsible and he denied medical attention, most likely because he felt very well at the time and had consumed drugs before without incident. Not an excuse just an observation. The department knowing they had a suspect that consumed a lot of drugs should've done more frequent checks than that, he was dead for such a long time that you cannot completely exonerate the department for not taking all apprioate precautions just because the individual chose to take large amounts of drugs recklessly. I do hope this incident changes protocol in their department, I can see the officers are concerned people but the best way to handle a situation is prevent it before it happens, which means frequent checks to get him help when he needs it instead of trying to ressitatate him hours after death.

You cannot violate anyone's right to consent to medical treatment. Even healthcare clinicians have to respect what patients want, in very rare cases you can get a court order to override the person's right to consent if the person is found unable to make a informed decision. All that takes time, no way this man would of been alive even if they went thru the proper channels to override to choice to decline medical treatment. He made a poor choice to eat the drugs he had on him. He made a terrible call refusing treatment. If they took him to a hospital and he said I don't want help, they would of taken him back to jail. No medical professional would touch this guy, because they would lose their license if they did. You could even get sued and face criminal battery charges for forcing themselves onto a patient refusing medical attention and potentially face even more charges. This is the same reason police cannot go into a hospital and demand the hospital draw blood from a person unless they have a court order that states it.

To eliminate some misunderstandings: you are allowed to refuse medical treatment as long as you don’t fall into a specific category such as not breathing adequately If you think otherwise imagine when ever PD picks up a drunk person they have to take them to the hospital to get their stomach pumped.
@sandilou2U
@sandilou2U 2 жыл бұрын
I am confused. Are you referring to specific circumstances? They do not take every drunk person for medical treatment. Plus, it is rare for anyone to get their stomach pumped due to alcohol poisoning as typically the condition naturally induces vomiting. And, the PD would call for EMTs or an ambulance to evaluate then transfer if necessary, rather than take them.

If the police feel that your incapable of making a rational decision for yourself, then they can force you to get medical treatment...if your drunk, have severe mental health issues, elderly people with dementia, ect.. I was forced to get medical help after having a seizure, I was very disoriented and confused afterwards and declined treatment, the officer told me that "I was incapable of making an informed decision" and forcibly took me to the hospital by ambulance. It was the right decision because I ended up having another seizure at the hospital. They could have forced him but based off of his behavior he didn't appear to be incapable of making an informed decision , the officers didn't do anything wrong here.
@KingMonkeyEnma
@KingMonkeyEnma 2 жыл бұрын
@@thetruepatriot7733 kinda true there are a set of questions that are asked to determine if you are capable of making an informed decision, just looking and acting impaired does not qualify you to be forced. So like if you have a GCS score of 15 and can answer the A&Ox4 questions you are considered informed. The questions and actions can often still be done by people who are super drunk and or high, hell even someone who just got back from being unconscious from low blood sugar can refuse service if they are capable of answering the questions and have a GCS of 15.

That's assuming too much though, it could easily be the case that they just had a morbid curiosity and wanted to see the body (Think, they know that 20 people crowding around the cell cant possibly be helpful to the inmate, yet they do it anyway, they didn't know if he could've been saved or not at that point) It could also just as easily be that they were running out of fear for their own hides if they know they weren't doing checks like they were supposed to. See how all 12 officers came running to see the show, clogging up the only exit? That means they care! And just because they aren't releasing information, and he did the drugs, and overdosed, in their custodial care, doesn't mean they didn't do the basics of their job and give first aid. And yet people want to say that just because cops are shooting people in the back, beating up handcuffed women, ignoring the laws and the constitution, the other officers all stand behind it, and none are being held accountable; that all cops are bad. Why, because the drug war is immoral? They are doing their job! If you don't like the police state, then get on SCOTUS and change the laws, stop blaming cops for they choose to do.
