And we're into our 33rd year of this amazing spicy chicken heaven here in South Africa. People questioning the word "Portuguese". Well, it's not Portuguese, it's actually "Portuguese-influenced", remembering Portugal's influence in Mozambique and South Africa, where Peri-peri sauce was 'perfected' with African Bird's Eye chillies.

They even influenced South Africa, where the "Peri-peri" sauce for the chicken was perfected and where the chicken was braaied (barbecued) on an open flame instead of being grilled or baked. So, yes, not stolen - just perfected, much like the Indians perfected Vindaloo curry, even though the concept was originally from Portuguese-influenced Goa. In addition, the chillies used in the original "piri-piri" used in Portuguese and Portuguese-African cuisine, were African Bird's Eye chillies anyway. The Nando's concept is totally South African. And, just as McDonald's is American, the Germans supposedly invented the Hamburger and the French/Belgians supposedly invented the fries. That doesn't make McDonald's German or French/Belgian. Neither does it make Pizza Hut Italian, and we know that pizza was invented by the Italians. I gather you may believe that "Pastel de nata" is a Portuguese dessert. Well, the name may be Portuguese, but you actually have the French to thank for the original custard tart or "Flans Pâtissier". Should the French now accuse you of stealing from them? You see, all our cultures are intermingled as are many of our cuisines. Nando's is totally South African, and they have been nice enough to credit the Portuguese influence. You should be proud of that. If someone "stole" an idea, they certainly would not credit the person they stole from. Logic?

It's casual dining, it's way better having the food in the resturant b/c it's less soggy than in the takeaway stuff. It's like if you ate in at pizza hut that doesn't make pizza hut fancy. I'm glad they had the macho peas in the US version! Best side dish. Also did you know a fair few of the nandos have reopened during lockdown so they can make some extra cheeky nandos for NHS crew?

Nando’s is my GO-TO. In the UK we are separated between those who would die for Nando’s, and those who think it’s overrated. It’s delicious, everyone has their own specific order that we seem to stick to and then we will insult others based on their choice, and also if you order medium or mild then you’re usually mocked endlessly. Nando’s is the perfect place for a date, it’s just a British institution. I don’t know what it’s like in other countries but it is amazing
