RIP Keith Emerson; RiP Oscar Peterson...how can we every thank you for sharing so much talent with us all, as with this piece, three minutes of life, love and happiness from a world fucked in every direction by hatred. I hope this garners hundreds of thousands of views and comments. If you read my little contribution, tell me, as you watched these two guys, and the accompanying musicians, including a some guy, Palmer, on drums, play this music: did you smile, did it make you happy for a moment?.....every time we lose a musician, a little happiness dies with them🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Twenty of the most famous fingers that ever walked the keys. Gone but never forgotten. Classic!
The fluidity of Oscar Peterson in this piece is simply amazing!

Yes, and this makes his interpretation of the Honky Tonk Train Blues sound less conventional than Keith Emerson's. Which is great playing, no doubt about it, but - in a more old-style Boogie-Woogie way. Peterson's wonderful feeling for the swing is just the topping on it.

Hey, the reason Mister Emerson took this gig was to force himself to practice. Keith's original recording of the Meade Lux Lewis tune was much better. He should have just improvised a new solo, I still jam over some of Keith's ostinato's.

Can we please stop all this juvenile bickering about who wins the playing contest here ... Keith was honoured to guest on the show as OP was hailed as the best jazz pianist ... even keith himself would never have said he was as good as Oscar ... I'm watching this on the anniversary of Keiths passing and the comments are very upsetting .. please also remember that Keiths piano concerto and his other compositions (Tarkus orchestrated) plus the music of ELP are being played by musicians of all standards all over the world now as benchmarks of 20th century classics ... Keith wasn't just a piano player but an innovator, composer and inspiration to thousands of keyboard players worldwide.

Ci mancava Ritchie Svliatoslav e avevano fatto Bingo
@SepiaSepiaKR4 жыл бұрын
This wouldn't have come together in the way it did, had either of them not been there. Both are absolute legends with very different approaches to the instrument, and they're both the greatest at what they do for what they do is truly theirs. Surely Keith might stand out a bit from a traditional jazz perspective, but jazz too is quite progressive and Keith pulled it off tremendously. Cheers in Keith's and Oscar's memories, and may their legacies be carried through their music for ages to come.

Look at how relaxed Oscar's hands are and how tense Keith's are. That says a lot about why Keith had so many deep problems with his chops in later years but Oscar kept blowing to the end, even after arthritis had begun eroding his style. Kudos to both great keyboardists, though.
@MeAndTheBoys_5 жыл бұрын
Keith looks like he took all the speed before this performance :D Talk about being stiff! Oscar of course is playing his tasty licks in a normal relaxed manner here but Keith is just rotating the same stock licks. Of course ,playing with Peterson,one might get little drained.

Having been the culprit who detuned Keith's piano for this session of Oscar's Piano Parties at the Shepherd's Bush TV studios I have to take issue with most of the above comments which favor OP against Keith. Oscar was a very genuine and caring individual who was gracious at all times and of course the consummate professional who exhibited the utmost compassion for all musicians, as far as I was aware. After this particular concert he invited me to his home where I tuned his piano. (contd.)

Shame on the fans who trolled him.

I was lucky enough to see this when it was broadcast live on TV. OP introduced KE by relating the story of how he first became aware of the young man's talent: a family member had been watching ELP performing at Madison Square Garden on TV in another room and called to OP to come and see 'a brilliant young jazz pianist'. They then showed a clip of what OP saw on the TV as he entered the room - KE sitting playing at a grand piano as it tumbled through the air on a huge mechanical device!

@StudioGattosulWebRoma11 ай бұрын

You know...it's ridiculous to say one played better than the other. It all depends on what you value. If you're going for staying faithful to Meade Lux Lewis' original song, then Keith Emmerson did the better job, as he played it note for note the way the song was written. If you're going for tasty jazz improvisation, then you have to say Oscar Peterson did the better job finding a groove and making it sing. I just love seeing them trade off sections and do completely different, yet awesome riffs with their turns leading the song. Peace.
@eddyvideostar8 жыл бұрын
+Les Les: This is a fine comment. Oscar's sounds fresher and more mellifluous due to our not having heard his improvisation on this, whereas we have heard Keith's rendition many times; for as you had said, and is the truth, it is played note for note.

sure the vibe is different, jazz vs classical is not about the same grooves, but we got to give credit to Keith in taking the synthesizer to a whole new level, and to me Brain Salad Surgery will remain one of the best album in music , it is so powerful, dynamic and melodic . I love jazz, it’s a different scene, Elp had to travel day after day to do a show and did not had time to practice, and on top of it they had to compose albums, it’s not a easy life……playing standards in jazz is about harmony and impro, and they play in small venues, can’t compare those musicians in the end, different lifestyles
