Just discovered your series. I'm an artist and art writer based in Paris, France. I've learned a great deal just from your attitude to the subjects covered. Bravo.

The images of Haring's works next to the advertisements helped me better understand his work in context. I wonder if today that contrast between his simple figures versus the ads would still work, since companies have begun to adopt similarly symbolic aesthetics. Great video as always.

On a trip home to Pittsburgh last year I toured the art gallery side of the Carnegie Institute. Took only one photo all day: a huge yellow mural by Keith Haring of humans running from spaceship lasers. This piece covered the entire end wall of the main gallery (30'x20'?), and was overlain by an AIDS mural styled after the LOVE paintings of the 1970s. STUNNING. Got home to VA Beach and looked into Keith Haring and his work. He was on the cultural pulse of NYC during those exciting but ultimately tragic times. Haring is seen repeatedly throughout the fascinating Netflix documentary series WARHOL DIARIES, a must-see! Thank you for this enlightening essay! Especially the 'scissors' piece at the end. GREAT VIDEO

Oops! Just checked my photo gallery and I described the Haring exhibit backwards: AIDS/LOVE mural is the HUGE work, and that is overlain by the space invaders. The juxtaposition of the 2 pieces blew me away when I first saw it; people running amok to escape the terrifying space lasers (AIDS)

Keith Haring's art is not exceptional. What is exceptional is the way he spotted empty billboard panels in the subways under NYC that stood empty for a time and were plain black. He drew on them and exposed his "art" to the denizens of the deep. He bypassed the gallery system and turned outsider art into insider art overnight. His art is not exceptional even now. There is no growth; no advancement; and no influence. He does not and never will affect the art world except through his brilliance in spotting a great PR opportunity. Many artists before him had done this, on posts, poles, and walls but it took the subway system to elevate his art. His work is forgettable.

No influence? Have you seen Shantel Martin?

@@AmorSciendi For an artist's work to be an influence, work that follows must build on the basis of the influencer. Shantell Martin's work bears no resemblance to Haring's except that it is line art. Look up Matisse. That's an artist who influenced those who came after.
