@nitegoat13696 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Jack does not talk about raping women in the book 'American Hardcore; he simply described himself as a “violent, robbing, gravedigging rapist” - HUGE difference. You do know the words "Rape" and "Rapist" have many meanings, don't you? Here are his exact words from American Hardcore (book): “And me being a violent, robbing, gravedigging rapist was part of my world. And that was like, ‘well, this is what we do, man. Yeah that chick passed out and I pissed in her face. So what?". Nowhere does he say he raped any women, or anyone.
@known_unknown2846 жыл бұрын
no i didn't know that. i thought rapist meant "one who rapes" and that to rape meant to have sex with someone by force. What is the esoteric meaning that you think he intended and what is your evidence as to why he meant it in that sense instead of the much more common one?
@nitegoat13696 жыл бұрын

U telling that they got kicked off a punk festival for a black humor joke? Ironic
@David_Downs6 жыл бұрын
I see both sides, on one side.. it was a joke and while tasteless, was just black humor, and that should be seen as such. On the other side, it was also a slap in the face to victims and the people who lost them, to say "they were just country fans". i think punk should have a level of offensive humor, but at the same time, it is a matter of where it is directed at, which should be the status quo, Mikes joke came across as attacking the people who suffered instead of the person who made them suffer, and as such it hit a nerve, as you are also saying this in the presence of the home team... had it been in another venue, they probably would have had a little more space to play with it, but it was in the place it happened. While they should not be entirely thrown under the bus for a bad joke, they should also have to take accountability that that joke was bad in that circumstance.

Morality being subjective doesn't mean that people cannot or should not have their own. In fact it means just the opposite, that everyone has their own. Assuming that moral relativism is the only valid morality simultaneously validates as well as invalidates all morality. Outside of theory one has to implement morality. One cannot be a "practical moral relativist". How could you respond to any situation with that mindset?
@AndreasDivus16 жыл бұрын
I was prompted to respond mainly by "subjective". If morals are subjective one can be forgiven in assuming theirs will be seen as valid. Or at least considered. But I get your point, and it was a punk rock show and gallows humor is part of that. Always has been. I was actually surprised at the amount of jeering!
@AndreasDivus16 жыл бұрын
Well, I agree. But I guess that booing a joke you found to be in bad taste is not really expecting an exception to be made for you. Unless they expected Fat Mike to be like "I'm sorry". It was more just expressing their opinion, I doubt if any of them had expectations of being compensated for it or anything. Anyone complaining about it after the fact is an idiot, I'm mainly talking about the event itself. Not what anyone has had to say after it.

This is the sentiment that I reached on this topic. When it comes to "it's just a joke, chill out," I agree with another commenter that NOFX made that joke at one the-actual-worst possible places and times. In this instance, not making a joke is not out of "so you're afraid of the crybabies,"-it's just decency.

Imho opinion all this left vs right, what is punk? stuff is irrelevant. The reality is Fat Mike directly made fun of a group of murder victims less than a year after it happened at the location. Yea I get it was meant to be a joke but some jokes go to far and this was one of them. People had every right to be upset. But now that NOFX was kicked off the festival the situation has worked itself out. In a years time NOFX will still be playing shows and we'll all have forgotten about this. So I'm not declaring we all have to hate NOFX just that in this one specific instance they were wrong.

lol most first wave 76/77 bands were pretty right wing except for the clash which none of them original punks liked. johnny and dee dee, the dead boys, fear, the germs, D.I, the vandals, NYHC/crossover bands, canadian punk rock thats not vancouvers DOA etc etc were all pretty right wing. Then 1988 happened with all those alternative ska rock squatters all of them politically one sided left and all coming out of California creating the perception that punk is a leftists only genre... Darby crash, peter steele, and Lee Ving loved using right wing ideology to trigger violence and riots in the punk left.

Just like anything else , there are groups of very different minded people under one grouping. There are left wing, right, middle political punks( even those who claim they aren't political because that's your core beliefs). Different generations of punks look at things differently. I grew up in southern California and all the punks I knew were pretty right wing. Despite what bands may have said in the lyrics which were anti right wing( like DK), us listeners were either too dumb it didn't care. It was the same as back then not understanding that a gay guy could be " tough." However my friend of the same age from Indiana who grew up into punk didn't understand how punks could be right wing. It basically came down to us white kids in southern California just being around white people ( mainly). Indiana guy had friends if all colors. However it's also a generation thing. All the punks kids I knew who are 5 years younger than me( I'm 45) are very left wing. So I would say punks being left or right depends or generation, and who/ what they grew up around( and hopefully can grow up with respect to other people and still listen to punk). I was a punk starting in the late 80's and things were very different, and certain things like Nazis ( in so cal anyway) was definitely tolerated and never questioned until the lmid to ate 90's/ early 2000's.

Never was a fan of NOFX, but I’ve got nothing against them. They are a typical Skate-punk band to me like just about every Epitaph or Fat Wreckords (am I spelling right?) band. Maybe that’s “profiling”, but seemingly all the bands I hear are radio-warp-tour-friendly “skate-punk”, ready for commercial globalized distribution to the masses. Read Eric Davidson’s book “We Never Learn” he writes it much better than I. Now the Cramps and New Bomb Turk releases on Epitaph are so Sick! As for NOFX I used to listen to them in my high school years, saw them at least once. They toured a ton and were a hard working punk band. I’m pretty sure Fat Mike is a millionaire by now. Now the Queers, I love, as well as The Spits: who did a split single with NOFX. Jello Biafra was there from the beginning when the Screamers and Crime were playing, and the number of L.A. and S.F. Punks were few. And while they appreciated Detroit/Cleveland and New York/England Punk. They had their own original musical performance ideas and they put them to work on stage and on the street they were creators of their very own thrift-bomb fashion scene, not just aping Iggy and the Johnny’s. Merch hardly existed, you had to make your own.

It's so true. Who cares what a bunch of bums think about our current social fabric. They have chosen a life that has prevented them from "adulting" and keeps them grinding away to pay rent/bills.

charles mortensen - More people care what these great artists think - than what some low-IQ, Reich-Whinging, Mark Deuce-fan-nobody thinks. But go ahead and surprise me. Book a gig - and see how many other knucle-draggers show-up to receive your dubious wisdom. They've accomplished and created - plenty. You simply spew garbage on the internet.

So many salty NOFX fans out there being total apologists for the fucked up comment made by NOFX. Fuck killing innocent people, Fuck joking about their deaths. Nothing punk rock about that at all. Furthermore, the promoters HAD to pull NOFX, otherwise, just imagine all the vendors and other bands that probably would have pulled out of the festival.

Why can't Keith, Jello or Jack state what the hell Fat Mike said? And it being an uncomfortable topic is exactly why it should be discussed - whatever it may be - rather than taking the snowflake way out and asking for "nice" questions.

Jello seems to be a bit confused here. Also Keith saying he's 63yo and has tough skin and thats why what dude said didn't bother him is a little ridiculous. First of all he wasn't attacking you, so the fact that YOU have tough skin is irrelevant. And secondly, being 63 and "worldly" doesn't mean your moral values should be anymore accepting of asshole statements. Do I think NOFX should of been canceled?? No. But I think Keith should show some fucking empathy towards the people and their families that were effected by that shooting. He forgets he has made a lot of public statements in the past about similar situations where he wasn't getting shouted down, and sang a different tune. This seems to be pandering. How very punk rock of him.

I was there. The show was Mike talking for 3 min. then playing one song. It wasn't his best effort on stage. After the comment, the folks there in Vegas seemed a bit surprised... A few boos, and some several dozen people leaving. It wasn't Mikes best moment... Honestly, I think that it was really tasteless and poorly timed along with an uninspired performance. Mike himself said they we're not headlining, the Bosstones were... NOFX was just "clean up".

Nofx is my favorite band of all time. The huge backlash they received is absurd. Sure it might've been a bit tasteless, but that's just their sense of humor. Anyone who actually knows anything at all about Nofx would know it was just a joke, they weren't literally praising the vegas massacre.
