They also didn't mention that when Clark was asked about being invited to the White House, she said that honor should go to the winners, it's special and they shouldn't have to share it with the runner-ups. There are 2 real parts to the accusation (for those that saw both games live, not just pictures of the aftermath): 1. The Iowa player (White girl) did it for less than a second (2 games earlier; NOT against LSU) while the LSU player followed the white girl around for almost 20 seconds. 2. LSU defeated Iowa 102-85 and this was in the final minutes of the game. It was a taunt that was seen as a very "rub it in your face that you lost" unsportsman like gesture.

The framing of this is complete BS. Just because they made the same gesture doesn’t make the two circumstances and context the same. I have no problem with athletes of any race or gender talking some good trash during a game, but Reese followed Clark around, then Reese and some other LSU players were doing it in the post game celebration, then Reese talks about how Clark needs to put respect on her name, and how she did the gesture to stir controversy and be some kind of example to “hood” girls or something. Clark did it for 2 seconds or less on her way back to the bench. So claiming that they’re the same is just flat out dishonest framing.
@shawnjackson3595
@shawnjackson3595 Жыл бұрын
Clark made that gesture as a slight towards Hailey Van Lith in the Louisville game because the two were trash talking each other back and forth for much of the game. I do think that context is important for that because it was a trash talking situation for Clark and not some misunderstanding that people aren't seeing, but on the other hand also because the reason why she did it had everything to do with the personal back and forth between her and Van Lith. We didn't really see personal back and forth between Reese and Clark and so when Reese did it, it kind of came out of nowhere. Like you said though, Reese did say that she planned to do the hand gesture because she felt like Clark is disrespectful. In my opinion, Reese was being hypocritical in being offended by Clark when she is known for similar antics herself, but I also don't think it's a big deal. As far as the other things that you've mentioned, I didn't see other LSU players doing it in the celebration and I never heard Reese say that she wanted to be an example to "hood" girls. Reese said "this is for the girls that look like me" which is very different. I also didn't hear Reese say that Clark needs to put respect on her name. Maybe she did, but I haven't seen that. Anyway, I think this is more of a proper framing of the situation.
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843 Жыл бұрын
@@shawnjackson3595 I believe Reese in her quote says you all think I’m to hood, and to ghetto, but when others (meaning Clark) do it y’all don’t say nothin. So I did it for all the girls that look like me etc etc. So she implied it. My issue with it is that Reese made it all about this controversy on purpose, per her own admission, and for some reason decided to take it out on Clark, and rather than focus on her teammates, and getting a bit win, she chose to make the spotlight all about her.
@shawnjackson3595
@shawnjackson3595 Жыл бұрын
@@structuredcmlandclearingex3843 I think that we're interpreting her words slightly differently, which is okay, but I took her meaning as to imply that she's speaking up for Black girls that get negatively depicted as hood and ghetto. By her own admission, Reese's antics were on purpose, but I'm not sure that she realized just how big of an issue it would all become. I did sense a little bit of animosity from Reese towards Clark which could be why she did it. Maybe it was her competitive spirit, maybe it was hard feelings for what she perceives as a double standard or maybe it was just jealousy because Clark is so good of a player. I don't know.
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843
@structuredcmlandclearingex3843 Жыл бұрын
@@shawnjackson3595 Fair enough, my main point is that people that are defending Reese making the claim that both girls did the same thing, and people reacted differently because of course racism, is ridiculous, because the two situations were completely different. I don’t care that they both did the you can’t see me thing, however one of them went way over the top with it, then made all these other statements that went just beyond two players trash talking during a game, then all these media people are pretending they both did the same thing. That’s my overall point. And the other point about gender is equally ridiculous, people complain about the trash talk in the NBA as well, at least the super flagrant stuff.

I thought the reason people took issue with Reese was cause she did it after the game was over & followed caitlin doing it while caitlin did it mid game after making a shot. While that may be valid the way everyone came at Reese calling her a POS & classless was uncalled for & a complete overreaction

No the issue is it was called jungle, or n word music when black men performed it like Chuck Barry, but called Rock and Roll when white men stole it., like Elvis.

its a leap calling the conflict racist. but Bri immediately takes this leap. Bri adds it was sexist too. but of course the media and folks like brihana immediately go to a racism and sexism conclusion for everything that ails us. . after going on ad nauseam about how racist of a scene this was; brihana adds at the end that it was not only racist but if men had done that it also would not have been a big media deal. so we turned a heated end of a sporting event to a dissertation on racism and sexism.

I think its just trash talk that shouldn't have gotten this kind of attention that it did. Part of the game. What really got it started was the internet. The name calling and disregarding what Clark did as well....-the derogatory unnecessary name calling-- At that press conference Angel Reese shared with us what she has been living. I listened and understand and it shouldn't be dismissed. I look forward to the next season. Wish them all the best.

The color of their skin is not the only variable. It's just the variable you choose To hinge your argument on. Your problem is if you can make an argument that it could be race related that it has to be race related. You never investigate any further to see if it is or isn't you just run with it, Then make a bunch of assumptions about the people who said whatever it is you don't like

Makes a difference whether you're looking at the opposing bench or fans, versus a couple feet doing it to one person. Definitely something the men do, but there are then some repercussions potentially.

The difference is one did the gesture while walking the court and in a general direction. The other did it in the face of another player while following them around the court with the intent to taunt. It’s the same gesture but not the same context. How is that difficult to understand?

@@brionajoySmith in football, players celebration using gestures after touchdowns all the time. Very few people think of that as unsportsmanlike and the player is not penalized. But if you do that same celebration at an opposing player in a taunting manor that player would be flagged/penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. The same gesture/action can mean different things in different contexts.

It's very racist to be so blinded by the race of the two people that you complete avoid the context. One did it walking down the court by her self. The other was following the girl around getting in her face. There are literally rules that one is considered a technical foul for taunting and the other is not. But the classes fool player did it after the game so can't exactly call anything then. If that happened after an NBA or men's college game dudes would be getting suspended for fighting, race wouldn't be and isn't a factor. Absolutely classless.

It's called the double standard of fans in the context of supporting their favorite players and teams. Something that is part and parcel of the territory. Fans have always and will continue to stan and shill for those they love and be overwhelmingly critical of those they don't. This kind of behavior and the criticism by fans occurs all the time and is frequently ignored. Unless of course when the media can exploit it to push their race based agenda and get clicks. Women's basketball should be happy fans are this emotionally invested because those people are more likely to tune in and buy tickets. Which is something a beggars league like the WNBA sorely needs.
