That’s a terribly boring comment. It’s one of the best songs of the 60’s.
@Hotsk7 ай бұрын
@@gomezaddams4347 Everyone has his own opinion. In my case, I look at how intricately a song is composed, and this one simply fails the test. It's just two chords, the I and the IV, being repeated throughout the entire song. Non-critical listeners may dig that, but I find it very, very boring. But, again, that's just my well-founded opinion. Anyway, thanks for chiming in. I do respect your opinion and wish you happy listening! P.S. I actually saw Velvet Underground perform this song live at the Boston Tea Party in 1968. It was the first time I'd ever seen anyone play an 8-string bass!

@lyricalch17 ай бұрын
Keith's guitar is always interesting, but this is a very pedestrian version of the song. It's not a blues song; it's not a feel-good song. It's about buying heroin in Spanish Harlem in the 1960s, when it was a very dangerous place if you were a "white boy" from Long Island, like Lou Reed. The original version stills sounds more avant-garde than any other, including some with Lou Reed himself. (As subsequent VU albums showed, Lou's sensibility was more rock 'n' roll/pop.) If any of the versions without John Cale were the original, it wouldn't be such a hit. John Cale added a drone effect on the piano, creating a wall of sound together with Sterling Morrison's rhythm guitar; he also plays a great bass run on the outro. There's noise in the background here, too, but it's straight 4/4 time and without any tension to it. Of the celebrity cover versions, the one that comes closest to this anxious wall of noise in the background is a duet with Lou and David Bowie. (A few string quartets and jazz ensembles have also come up with interesting takes on the song that don't try to be like the original but that aren't square rhythm (4/4) simplifications like this, either.) John Cale's 1967 self was the secret sauce that made this song a classic, and way, way ahead of the rest of pretty much everybody ever since.
