I learned yesterday from a asian lathe operator working on crappy metal, he fabricated a ball bearing backed bearing in a cup that burnished/ work hardened a surface to a smoother harder surface as the bearing ball presses on a very small part of the worked surface. It can produce a near glass like surface, like pressing a crushed ball of aluminum foil into a shiny bearing.

I know nothing about model steam engines and they don't especially interest me, but I always watch your videos because you seem such a nice chap and I enjoy watching you work and listening to your excellent way of speaking. 😊

I took an night school. Couse called Model Making where we had access to a local schools machine and wood working shops. they had bins of material that you could buy by the pound, all the bins had a price sign on them except for one that was labeled Free. In the Free bin there were usually small scraps of various materials plus some 2inch dia. x 18.5 inch long steel. All of the newbies to the class would grab a length off this steel to practice turning on it, They would soon discover that you could not get a good finish on it. I found out that this material was offcuts from a local machine shop and he gave it to the school for free as the recyclers would not take it, it was a special stainless steel that even the professionals had problems getting a good finish on.

Yes . . . . that is how a Triple Expansion Engine Works, the clue is in the name.

I'm just glad you're up and able to keep on, keepin' on. Though there may be a part 4 in the future, but with a different set of tasks. What are your plans for this engine? I'm looking forward to the pipe work, on the plants when you get back to them. Take Care.

There are only 3 episodes in this series as it is really part of the Stuart Triple Expansion Engine rebuild.

Hey Keith , where have you been, you cutting back on videos? Worried for you! You need a Girlfriend, ask your daughter she must know a good looking blond. I am sorry i am late, thank you for the imperial sizes you sent me by email. I am going to buy three stuart engines. I bought a lathe 8 by 16 like your warco but slightly bigger, it turned out it was juck. The tailstock foot was milled in correctly which resulted in it sitting .004 off the bed on a angle upward toward the inside of the lathe, then they drilled and tapped the toolpost bolt hole into the cross slide Crooked, next the LED RPM read out was not indicating the correct speed, the chuck safety cover would not shut of the motor when engaged, then the new chuck that came with the lathe, one of the three jaws stuck when trying tighten them. I took the chuck apart it turned out that their was some sharp edges of steel sticking out inside the chuck catching the gear closest to the jaw gear i filed that up now the chuck works smoothly .The manufacture as i figured it out did not cut the vgroove in the footplate of the tailstock deep enough something i will NOT even consider fixing on my milling machine, my fine feed adjustment knob on mill has so much slop in it that i need a dro on the z axis to do fine accurate cuts as the slop in the fine feed is just too much now the seller refuses to replace these parts, as she clearly stated that all parts would be the same” Can you actually believe she said that”!? They refuse to honor the warranty Keith the machine is less then ten days old on my bench for five un used accept to check it. So i have requested a refund and compensation for this utter rip off and to keep the lathe. I asked for a partial refund and for them to simply send me a new foot plate for the tailstock correctly milled as well as a new compound slide corrected tapped for the toolpost bolt they declined Keith!? I saw a Myford for sale here but its used the guy wants 4000.00 thats to much so i will either get, a busy bee unit new or king canada both 10 by 22 units which is what i should have done to begin with. Never ever buy a metal lathe on ebay or Amazon because the sellers some are ripping people off with in correctly manufactured lathes. Well must go Keith i hope your well my friend wishing you the very best: Daniel Ottawa Canada:

Another Essay Daniel, you must like typing - ! do you just do it to keep warm? (I have recently seen the temperature in Ottawa) ........... I still make a video almost every day for my Patreon Supporters www.patreon.com/keithappleton . . . . . also on Patreon there are videos that are not public. I have to make a living and the ad revenue on KZbin for the freebies is not good this time of year. The videos on KZbin will be down to 2 or 3 (maybe less) videos per week.

@@keithappleton Hi Keith, sorry for the long SA’s i am simply pissed about my ten day lathe. I know i said i would join your patron channel, yes ok i will, next week at some point i will donate to your channel. I have a question for, i have no choice but to build my steam engines from Cold Rolled Steel, also the plans call for welding the standard to bottom flange. Can you recommend a steel type. I cannot afford Bronze its 100$ for 3/4 by 12 inch here my cylinder is 2 in dia. Cast Iron more cost the bronze. Happy weekend Keith, thanks for replying: regards Daniel:
