In India basically there are four professions :- - Engineer - Doctor - Civil Servant ( IAS, IFS etc) - Government Employee If you have any of the above professions then you'll be respected by the people in India else you'll be regarded with disdain. Only a very few number of jobs get respected in the society. That's the reason the unemployment rate in India is so high.

As an Indian I have a small insight into all of these responses. The society in India (parents, extended family, the general public) tells children that a doctor, engineer, or some successful business-related career are the only careers that a child should try to work for. It gives the public a sense of respect for the child and anyone who doesn't go into that area will not be as respected. The kids may seem like they are interested in those careers, but it is because of the enormous (and dangerous) pressure put on them to become something in that field, even if it is not their interest.
@luffynaruto20810 жыл бұрын
I think the same pressure that is on us by our parents give us the foundation to be successful........I think our parents put pressure because they know that it is very easy to loose hope in our country that's why they want you to go into safer fields. But look now because of the iit engineers there are so many startups and people are getting jobs.Indians are considered to be hardworking and i accept that we are not allowed to go to some other fields but i feel that today indian youth is in everyfield,only engineering and doctors and scientists might be recognized but the artists are also coming up so as sports representatives of india. I have been in US for 2 years and the kids are really directionless and ii had my cousin brother and his american friends had noidea what to become.I think you people talk about the pressure but the care and commitment our parents have towards our future,look at west they ask their kids to move out at 16 -18 and also the kids dropout and work in mcdonalds. we are lucky that we dont go through all those things
@nikhilsastry355010 жыл бұрын
True, there is an upside and downside to it all. If it weren't for the direction my parents gave me, I wouldn't know what to do with my life. Thanks to them I am going for a doctorate in physical therapy (which I enjoy). It is just unfortunate that some people can't pursue what they want without feeling pressure for a different career.

I dreamt of becoming either a doctor or an engineer for many years of my childhood despite not knowing why. I was never motivated to achieve these "dreams" at all. After a few years, (in 8th grade) I finally decided to become a psychologist. And I chose this field after research and without any influence of society and my elders. My parents were very supportive but not my relatives. They all made fun of me for wanting to become "pagaloon ki doctor" (meaning doctor of psychos). One day i found myself being told by one of my very close uncles to choose medical and leave this psychology fever but I wasn't convinced, as all his points were related to 'respect'. I questioned him at the time, "What will be the point of me becoming a doctor if I will not be happy or at peace with myself?". His reply struck me hard and exposed me to the materialistic and slave minded ideology of the majority of South asians, he answered "Your happiness doesn't matter. What matters is how others view u and how much they respect u" . Even though I want to be become someone not respected or appreciated enough in my subcontinent, I am more motivated than ever!. I have seen the lives and swevens of my cousins being demolished by their parents and I am so jubilant that my parenst are an exception ❤. To all the people being forced to shatter their dreams, fathom yourself as an ideal version of yourself u want to be and the ideal version others want u to be, which one is happier?

As a combat military veteran my doctors for the last 18 years working at the VA were mostly Indians. They good and the vet love them. When i visit the libraries in verious cities in Florida, one can see the presence of Indian parents with their kid helping in the homework and studies. This is awesome, The other groups their parents are absent. Thanks for video upload.

You get many straight answers in Vietnam as well. Most of my students (not all, mind) are driven by future prospects and abroad opportunities, often imagined by their parents. You get a ton of accountants and nurses out of that system and almost no artists and proper scientists. I had one especially memorable cause where a student (21) said she will be a history teacher (due to the system, most Vietnamese hate history). I answered wow, you must love history then and she answered with a strict no. Why then study it? Because my parents want me to work at a public school.

@@Truthholder345 correct. My words could be harsh but for most part our parents want us to be like sheeps. They literally for most part don't even know what they are advising us to do. They just hear a buzzword and force us to pursue that. I remember I when young I was trying to learn more about stock markets etc . My parents used to tell me that don't waste time in this. Cut to 10 years ,I am an software engineer, they were praising my cousin that he is learning about that . I literally lost my cool. Because at that time it was not popular enough . Parents are usually 5-10 years late to catch these trends until everyone is competing for that 1 thing. They just want us to win that competition.

I just wanted to tell you one thing that we must not forget the fact that the grass is always greener on the other side. You seem to be pretty impressed by the Indian system of education but please keep in mind that this system also has a lot of flaws. The flaws that we as students know well. All the students that you interviewed for their goals in life, everyone just gave you some academic answers. everyone wants to pursue careers in the academic sector. This is because they are hypnotized for a long time by their parents to pursue academic careers. But there are other things to life as well. The ultimate goal for a person is to be in the pursuit of happiness. but these students, they simply are kicked out of pursuit by following the strategies and doing things that they don't like. many are forced to quit their passions to do something else just for the sake of the parents and the societal pressure...

It depends on which region you interview. This is South India which is more oriented towards services. Many in North go to Military services. But that doesn't mean there aren't people from South who go into Military too. There are plenty. With a population of 1.3 billion people, no sample size is sufficient to represent all interests. It is difficult to generalize people, let alone the entire Country. What we can generalize though is the education system. Since this system is top-down, with syllabus set by the Government of India, all children are given the same education at least till their 10th grade. So it is reasonable to expect that all children are well aware of the choices they wish to make in life. Sure some parents do expect their kids to get into a particular line but that is dwindling by a big margin now. We are witnessing children enter into diverse disciplines.

Great work, Keith. Picked up some great insights from your videos shot across schools in China, India, Thailand and the rest. I hope you succeed in bringing back focus on the upgrade the US education system so desperately needs. The Indian system is in no way perfect, but it is certainly skewed towards learning tough fundamentals. What the videos do not reflect is that most of these kids have no idea of what they’re talking about today, but will get driven into such specialised fields by their parents, peers and families later on. What happens afterwards is the real problem. A report recently suggested that over 90% of Indian engineers are unemployable. Sadly, the world only has visibility of the remaining 10%. A lot of these kids will aspire to join the military, not only for patriotism’s sake, but because military jobs here are coveted for pride as well as subsidised facilities the government provides for life. Indians should be saddened that none of these kids chose business as a focus (it’s typically looked down upon by the average middle class in India) or agriculture etc. Most of these kids will “run” things as many Indians do everywhere. Few will “lead” or “build”.
