I still remember i was nervous as hell when I had to answer the question in front of all my classmates, I didn't know what I want to be in life at that time. I was searching from my very limited vocabulary. and the only occupational word that I remembered was businessman. So I went by businessman. They answered your question with the few words they know. A video like this just show there are many things we have in common. Kids on both sides of the ocean have many of the same dreams and aspirations. You don't expect kids to be a baseball player because the sport isn't popular in China. Otherwise wanting to be a scientists, teachers, firefighters isn't that unusual. The 1 thing that kept coming up over and over: there are over 1B Chinese and those in school are learning English. In America, on the other hand, very few people seem to be learning Mandarin.
@madhavgopakumar85978 жыл бұрын
You cant compare english and mandarin. English is a International language spoken in every corner of the world. Mandarin, is a beautiful language, but is only spoken in 2 countries.
@shk00design8 жыл бұрын
You are right about English. Yes, Mandarin is an official language in just 2 countries (excluding Taiwan which is not recognized as a country) you only have China & Singapore using it as an official language. Based on numbers, Mandarin has many more speakers but the geographic reach is not very big like English, Spanish or Portuguese. You can say the same about Hindi / Russian. There are a lot of people speaking these languages but they are spoken in 1 or few countries.

I think that what is lacking in many countries like Japan, US and other overly developed countries is that there is so much freedom to choose that we over burden our children with freedom of choice without the proper foundation. Moreover, in the US, there is little to no competion in the schools. Unless you are in a sport that allows for cut throat competition, you will never know what it is until you have graduated and try getting a job. The US job market is the best and VERY competitive.

A lot of my students in Korea want to be pilots, programmers, engineers, teachers, or pro-gamers. The jobs these kids want really shows what is important in their country. For example, the only way to get in or out of Korea is by airplane or ship. Korea also has large pro-gaming matches. Samsung, LG, Kia, Hyundai, etc. really push the engineer focus, and parents push for their kids to get the "best" education from an early age. There are many ways in which they waste resources and push their kids too hard, but I feel that they will work out the kinks in their system relatively quickly.

One thing to consider in things like this is that it's not just what these kids want. In China, what a student studies is usually what their parents want them to be. From a young age many children are kind of "pre programed" concerning what they want to do. Not to say that every child parrots what their parents want, but the culture behind deciding a profession in China is very very different than it is in America.

Chinese schools place far too much pressure on students to succeed while American schools don't quite put enough, and parents do need step it up, but not to the point that Chinese parents do. There's something to be said for encouraging creativity and independence, two major things Chinese students lack.
