Another fascinating entry Keith! I am a little sorry that I am up to date with the series--I want to click 'next' and get down to the reassembly stage right away!!! One area I would appreciate a little more detail on is the clearing of the oil lines. That is a real task and every tip or trick you can give there is very welcome indeed. My father struggled a great deal with the internal oil lines on the injection machines he was employed to maintain--along with a hundred other tasks that were his responsibility in the factory. Admittedly the owner had bought them for scrap and then expected him to get them running like new again... Not an easy task at all--not least because for some reason the prior factory had cut away small sections from every pipe. I recall it took him months to get them all unblocked, replumbed and running half way smoothly. What made it worse; he was never given the time to strip them down. They had to be running at full output all through the day and then any work my father needed to do to them had to be carried out after knocking off time. Definitely hard grind.

Nice to be back for the Monarch Keith. The build thus far has been great to follow along with and we are sure this taper attachment will be equally as well a joy to watch to learn and to share some thoughts about s well. WOW the whole thing is a bearing ride mechanism we think looks neat. We always replace bearings in all rebuilds, it is our method no mater what you see with the eye. Nice you are replacing all of these bearings we have never seen the inside of a taper attachment for a lathe. BOY the Internet sure has a lot on this currently still used taper attachment for the lathe. No rust where we live in the desert, thank you for the share, Lance & Patrick.

That entire lathe seems really well built, but the quality and detail of this taper attachment really shows the care they put into building the machine. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it right and for taking us along on the journey.

The bearing setup has some similarity to a Radial Arm Saw. In a RAS, the bearings are mounted on the yoke on eccentric bolts. The bearings travel in the ways machined into the arm. The stiffness of the travel is determined by the eccentric bolts pressing the bearings into the semi-circular ways.

I did not get a good look at the part that clamps to the ways -- the one with the spanner nuts on each side. It should have a U-shaped channel underneath that corresponds to the raised section of the way. Often the end of the piece that is nearest the operator in use is broken off so the grip on the lathe is just L-shaped and just torques off when you try to cut a taper. This is probably how it gets busted. If I haven't made myself clear here and I probably have not, let me know and I'll send you a photo.

Everything engineered and manufactured with the same attention to detail as the rest of the machine. No making the taper attachment as an afterthought. That main casting is a doozy.

Considering how gunky this was and how gunky these usually get (nobody cleans them, nobody) i think this one was lucky. Certainly dodged a bullet because once they get rusty and inoperable, someone usually wants to use them and they end up being abused.

I will be thoroughly disappointed if you don't scrape and flake the parts of the taper attachment to match all the rest of the lathe.
